Material list
1/2” diamond mesh metal lay or similar
Woven riven lath is ok as well
60 minute building paper or similar felt waterproof paper or bithuthene just don’t try peeling the paper off the back as you prolly won’t have much luck
Hand tacker staples, staple gun
5 d galvanized nails
Caulking for windows and doors
Lowes or Home Depot fast set stucco just add water
Total cost. Around 350-400.00
Hi faithful viewers and new inquirers to my video of how to fix your stucco repair around a damaged pluming repair or any repair for that matter.
Ask if you have any questions or suggestions on how to do this better. As many of you know I am a seasoned plasterer, lathing and plaster contractor since 1991. In the early days it was much different than it is today. Seems many things are different that they were yesteryear. Let me give you a few examples.
For one, a hod carrier is called a hod carrier because he's was the one who would carry an aluminum built v shaped bucket on his shoulders up a ladder to the brick layers or plasterers above. Today the hod is a thing of the past. Fast forward a few years. Home Depot and the Homer bucket. wallah the new way to carry mud up a ladder. Yet the bucket is much harder to carry, go figure. I guess the production line on hods fell to new lows over the years. Now new hoodies don't really even know what a hod is. Nor will you see brown stucco when we do the brown coat.
A second example is the use of furring nails. Long long ago our wire was made flat, much like chicken wire. Until the invention of self furred wire and pneumatic nail guns and 7/8" staples, lathers had to use what's called furred nails to space the wire away from the wall so mud could be squeezed behind wire lath. Today wire comes self furred and days of the furring nail are all but gone.
A third example of change over the years is what I believe holds true too many plasterers but not all is the interest of the beauty of conventional stucco. Now granted acrylic stucco will expand and contract with the system and inhibit extensive cracking. Acrylic is also a beautiful finish. When acrylic dries after its initial application it can be a beautiful wall. In fact it is so pretty that you would almost think it was painted. Acrylic stucco comes in any color of the spectrum and can be matched to specifications within 90% of its sample color. this is something that is hard to achieve with conventional stucco. What is the drawback and I bet you are saying to yourself what is Ken trying to say here. Well here it is guys. This is what I think about acrylics. All that I have written above plus this. However there is an even keel when it comes to cost. Because regular (conventional stucco cracks and some people are adamant that stucco isn't supposed to crack. Well these people are just misinformed. You see, stucco is supposed to crack. Its just not supposed to burn, it insulates well and the termites won't eat it. It goes the same for acrylics yes. But here is the thing. Regular conventional stucco is under rated. Once you truly understand art, and I will add that it doesn't take much to learn art, it's the yearning for art that will define who you are and tell you what you want to see. Acrylics are flat, no character, in fact it looks like it was painted on. Whereas regular stucco is natural. regular stucco comes from the earth and so do its colors. Not like acrylic who's colors are made in a factory in St Louis. They are both beautiful finish cladding for residential and commercial applications. The choice is yours. Which would you rather have on your dream home? Acrylic stucco? or Conventional stucco?

All I gotta say is this is such a great video. I took the time and watched this video twice and successfully completed my first stucco repair. Got all the right tools, the same material (with exception for getting steel lath instead of diamond wire) and did my best to stick to this routine. Turned out great and i appreciate all the information. Not only do I have another skill set under my belt but also earned me some money on the side! Great vid! Thanks!

Great thorough repair done with pride not rushed by an employee . I'm doing a repair on eifs but still chose to use metal mesh and I liquid nailed under the sides then put screws in to hold it tight ill take screws out tomorrow and continue I wasn't completely sure how to get the heavy sand finish but see a green sponge float is what I need I'll pick one up tomorrow. Only other guy I really appreciate is Kurt Giordano he's in cali too he's really cool and takes pride as well. Thanks I learned alot today

@@davidsgarage44 I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Sounds like you are on the right track. Maybe even one better. Above average. Great job with the liquid nails idea. Food for thought. Next time don’t liquid nail the top or the bottom so any water that might be flowing down behind the foam won’t hit a dam. Kirk’s a good guy

I am so thankful for this video! I just received an estimate for a stucco patch job. I was surprised at how much the repair was for. Then after watching your video, I understand how much work it takes to do the job. With that being said, this 66-year-old gal is going to give this a try. Hi Ken, just wanted to say thank you for your detailed descriptions and instructions. My husband died unexpectedly right after repairing a plumbing issue in our home. I was left with a gaping hole in the exterior wall and little resources for the repairs. I have no men in my family anymore and was quoted prices I couldn't afford. So, off to KZbin I went... @@AbersonPlastering To a point ya… but showing someone how to assemble/replace a p-trap under their sink is pretty easy. They can probably do it based on the video. Or for example changing out a single pole light switch. Even some simple drywall patching. Stucco patching is more involved than those things. At least to make it look good. I guess anyone could just mix up a batch of rapid set from Home Depot and just smear two or three coats on there.

Thanks and oh I know, I have three daughters. And I’ve come to realize the value of a woman at work. Most don’t fool around. I just wish I could find a woman that was interested in doing the work here. Women tend to have more pride in their work. Trouble is everything in this trade is heavy, even too heavy for me. Why do they have to make the bags of stucco so heavy? I don’t know. But they do. Hey good luck, hopefully it’s a smaller task that you have to do. You can do it. Your hardest part will be the handling of the bagged material. Be smart about it. And if you are going to use any type of fast setting material, I recommend not being to over confident with it. Keep an eye on it and don’t be over confident about it. Expect the patch to dry faster than you think. Be ready to level it off fast. Not trying to scare you. As long as you don’t walk away you will be fine. You can gently add more water if the material in the bucket is starting to get hard, but from my experience, it will take longer for it to dry on the wall and in the bucket which isn’t a horrible thing.

Thanks for the video, Ken! I have similiar hole (smaller) at the cabin and was thinking about to call someone to fix it when the snow are gone, but damn it either. The tools and materials i need cost what? (And has most likely some of it in the garage?) Less then $150 and 1 hour with work that everyone most likely can copying your work? Each time im trying something from youtube folks in my family and friends are so afraid to try it out. They are almost everyone telling me... no, no you can't do that! You have to hire someone to do that! That costs about $100 hour or $200 hourly rate... plus most likely more if someone are kinda assholes. Just because i don't have the education? Electricty and plumber work, that's fine because if something is done wrong with it could give me a lawsuit and a huge penalty and same with electricty if there would been a fire because of me the insurance wouldn't cover it. So i know the felt i won't work with but i mean how hard can it be to copying someone work? That has been recorded?! Could potential save me alot of money and again give me a boost of selv-confidence to do other things too. I had someone coming to the place to grandfather once late at the evening the plumber was given him a shock bill about $1,000 for one hour work plus driving. After that i have been doing most of the necessary things my self. What's the worse can happening? I have to call someone who can do this job, but hey.. If it works for me it could give me boost of self-confidence and could go for the roof after that. Im going to try to fix the hole in front right beside the door after seeing this video next month when im going to be there. Thanks for given so good and detailed video about the problem and given me inspiration to fix similar problem. Saved the video until im going to look at the problem. I had been trying copying couple videos from youtube earlier everyone has worked like it said. Im always having a critical thinking since it's uploaded by people i don't know, but the way you have been doing fixing this hole seems logical and the correct way to fix the problem. :) So thanks again! :)

Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I was hoping not to wait 2 weeks before painting… any chance we can paint same day somehow?
@AbersonPlastering
@AbersonPlastering 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely. If it a small job. When you use this formula you could go to lunch come back and paint it. If for some reason it fails just paint it again. But I would only risk it on a smaller patch not a big job. On a side note I’ve never had a paint job fail, but I’m long gone by the time it would fail. I’ve never heard anything negative. I’ve helped people by painting it fast because sometimes they are selling and need it done yesterday

Love this video and my question is? What kind of or brand Stucco Paper do I use? Where do I buy it? Home Depot or Lowes?? I am going to be removing the Evaporative Cooler from my wall. Thanks for the help.

Get 60 minute building paper if you can. There is also regular grade D. But it won’t say what minute it is. If you can’t find the paper use roofing paper. Good luck Jerry

Great video! I'm replacing a kitchen window with one of a different size. I cut out the old window using a diamond wheel and went thru the chicken wire, so it's a clean cut to the stud. Should I break out the perimeter to expose and tie in to the existing wire? Also, the exterior wall is tight against the studs, not sure you could run paper between it. How should I handle that?

yes and use a pry bar to pull the stucco back to be able to waterproof the wall as best you can

Thanks for the video, Sir. How do you call the Black paper (at 10:00)? It will help me to buy it from Lowes. Thanks.
@AbersonPlastering
@AbersonPlastering Жыл бұрын
Hi user, the black paper can be called Fortifiber, Plaster kraft, 10 D and 60 minute black paper. It also can be purchased as double or single ply. Double usually goes over solid shear wall and single over open stud, but thats not written in stone.

@AbersonPlastering
@AbersonPlastering Ай бұрын
No it’s solid and in good condition see how hard the wood is at 6:29. All of the wood is good. It looks like that copper plumbing will need to be replaced soon. Perhaps it would be better to build a hatch to access the plumbing at a later time., instead of permanently sealing the access here What do you think phdez09?
