I love your investigations of fiber sources. "I have heard or read" (but not tried myself) that mohair is great as a reinforcement in your hand knit socks, especially if you have a consistent spot that wears out. Could add that to your upcoming sockstravaganza science project!

I've tried it! It totally works, but I'm not a big mohair fan. I don't hate it, but I do prefer to try other stuff. You should try it for yours! Then you'll know how you like it!
@janatherton9194
@janatherton9194 3 жыл бұрын
It works, but I wouldn't add too much of it to your wool blend, maybe around 10-15%, so the sock retains it's stretch and doesn't bag out, alternatively you can carry a strand of a mohair/silk blend along with your hand spun, it makes good socks for wearing inside boots in the winter.

Trish, I am so glad you are talking about mohair! Angora goats are so special they were the original cart goat, please look at the old pictures on the internet. Also, unlike dairy or meat goats they can not have their horns removed. The horns are how the goat stays cool.

Hi Trish, hope you're OK xx 😘 If you put Mohair in the Fridge for a couple of hours, it stops the hair from attacking your nose and mouth. I'm not too fond of goats either. But thats a funny story behind it.!!! It sounds very informative though. It looks so soft and squishy. Could actually see the difference between the Mohair and Llama. This was a great video podcast. Thanks for anither great Breed Study. Happy Spinning. Take care and stay safe. Love you loads too.xxxxxxx 💗💛💓

Llama does have a huge range. I used to process llama for small farms. Some people like to have it dehaired to remove the guard hairs. Some llama is very comparable to soft alpaca.

I recently bought mohair at a farmers market. I spun it up. I had natural and blue and I blended them, spun them and need to ply them. Thinking of spinning the blue alone and then plying. I very new to this, experimenting is fun.

Yay, more breed study! The sock extravaganza sounds wonderful, even though I don't knit :-) Your mohair yarn is so thin and fluffy. Drum carding alpaca/llama is so hard because it all gets stuck on the licker in but I love spinning it. I just keep accumulating more and more alpaca fleeces...I must have 15 now! I'm never going to get them all prepped lol.

very interesting spin, i have spun some llama some years ago, but have not spun mohair. I do have some Llama fiber that I bought about 11 years ago from a farm about 20 min north of me, not the same animal I spun before. It will be my next spin, now I’m curious about how soft or course it is. She had a beautiful snow white show Llama (say that fast 3 times ;p), not his fiber either, darn, so I’m hoping it was a soft fiber because I bought three 4 oz bumps.
