Trish, those colours! Gorgeous! I wish postage wasn't so expensive from the US to the UK, I would definitely want to order some yarn from you in that colourway. For anybody else watching this in the UK: I found it really hard to find top or fleece of Dorset Down, but Tamarisk farm sells a gorgeous Dorset Down yarn. I have used it in socks a few times. They have washed many times, worn those socks very regularly. I am a Nordic walking instructor, so I basically walk for a living. My Dorset down socks are alive and kicking. No holes, no pilling, no felting. That yarn is definitely worth a try, even if you cannot buy the wool to spin yourself

Hi Trish, I hope you're OK 👌 apart from your eyes. I hope they're soon feeling better 💗. Thankyou so much for doing the extra sheep study for socks abd explaining the difference between Combed Top and Roving. The way that I tried to explain the difference was that Combed Top is smoother than Roving . Love the yarns are such pretty colours. You're so much appreciated for everything you do. Hope you have a Great Weekend especially your Thanksgiving on Sunday. Take care and stay safe. Lots of love Jen 💘💕xxxx 🤗❤

In England it goes to the British wool board, most of the downs live on chalky lands. So the downs go from Sussex to Dorset.

I have not had a chance to spin the Dorset Down yet, I am still in the middle of a breed study on Shetland and trying to get a couple of Christmas gifts spun and woven. Plus I am in the middle of a couple of paper craft things as well. I will get to it soon. I think it is a little silly for people to think you can or should test a million different things. That is why the kits are so great, so we can do our own test. Thank you.

I love the look of the dorset down. Still working on spinning everything. Thank you for posting these so we can come back to them! I have no problem plying, I even watched your plying video with the floor spindle and it helped me to get the movement on the hand spindle. I'll mark the dorset down as a "win" on my labels so I remember when I get to spinning it. Enjoy your Clarks Thanksgiving!

Happy ClarkesGiving ☺️ I agree with you on worsted being stronger. It is also less likely to pill as the fibres being lined up means smoother yarn, less friction. I always spin worsted. I was about to order your 4 breed kit - then I saw the postage to Australia 😱 It took a while to get my breath back. So I’ll just have to watch you enjoy the process 😘

I’ve always loved the softer, finer, fibers for spinning, but i need to step out of my box and work with those more rustic fibers as I can see their plus side for sturdier knitted fabric for socks and sweaters. Thank you for doing these so I can see their benefit and that there are some wools that don’t felt when machine washed that aren’t treated to be super wash.
@carrietreder84743 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100% about doing your own testing, everyone has different needs and wants. I know I wash my socks gently, always on cold and I’m ok with hand washing if needed. So that means the spinning experience carries more weight for me and why I didn’t enjoy the Dorset Down. It works great for others! No one person can test All The Things. I’ll be very interested to try the South Down. I hope you’re feeling well and have a great Clarksgiving tomorrow!

Hello Trish, I am SO glad you are doing these test, I may have to change my opinion and try dorset down as a comb top instead of roving, makes me wonder if that is why I struggle with different fiber. Your explanation in layman terms are wonderful even I can understand them :) Thank you !!!

You cracked me up...I don't have a lab LOL. I'm happy when my socks wear out because it's an excuse to make more LOL. LOVE that color you ended up with for the second swatch. I think getting a little "furry" wouldn't bother me at all with socks...maybe a sweater, but not socks so much. Well, actually if it was a cardigan I don't think it would bother me either.

@libellula33133 жыл бұрын
I see roving/top advertised with a silk or nettle addition recommended for socks, do you have any experience of these additives for strength instead of nylon? Love your studies and videos in general.

I'm trying to spin Southdown for socks. My 2 ply plyback test comes out at 25wpi and my 3ply at 20 wpi. Which would be best? I know it will puff up a lot when I wash it. Margaret from the FibreTribe.
@FiberLoveDiary3 жыл бұрын
I like from 19 to 22 for socks, but it's really personal preference. I'm sure it will fluff up so I'd probably go with the 25. Or you could soak a tiny sample and see what you get.

@@FiberLoveDiary I have a love hate relationship with it. It’s huge & holds a ton of clothes. I have trouble getting the kids really dirty clothes clean. So I usually wash those twice. It’s fine for everyone else’s clothes and I also love that I can fit an entire king size comforter in it.
