Knitted Asymmetrical Shawl Tutorial

This scarf is actually more lovely in real life than it shows on the video. It self borders on two sides... One side with the eyelets, and the other side with the two stitches knitted together. Very happy with the results, and it's so easy to do! Don't get discouraged if it doesn't look right when you start. It needs several rows to start coming together. Just go with it.

This is the first knitting I have done since my dtr was in Jr. High. As you showed the YO and the KFB, I remembered them. I though this would be a great start to practice my tension and uniformity. I ordered circular needles but don't have them yet so I am using my grandmothers straight needles. I had frogged a lot of my Christmas items that didn't sell and tied them all together and rolled in quite a few balls. I'm just going to use them to practice with. Whatever color comes up will be random. Should be a great practice item. Loved the tutorial. Very easy to understand. Made me remember how much I loved knitting.

Thank you! The first stitches are beasts and it works the better the nearer you work at your tips! Near the eand of the tips but not so that they fall down youll work the easiest way! All the best to you!

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I love that you focus on easy to repeat patterns. I'm a crocheter teaching myself to knit with aran weight yarn on a 6.5mm knook. This is my first project... going well so far! I have an aversion to garter stitch fabric, so I've been purling the odd (non-eyelet) rows, increasing the last stitch with the KFB as usual. It's coming out in a nice drapey stockinette with just a tiny bit of curl, but I think it will block out!

Funny enough I have a stockinette aversion because of the curling, lol. So glad its working out for you though! Something you may want to try though would be a slight border of seed stitch or garter stitch, say five or three stitches wide on each side to prevent the curling.

Thank you for this great tutorial which made things very clear. I've been trying triangular shawls, actually I loved knitting the "age of brass and steam" shawl (I couldn't have done it without the video instructions), but I was always kinda afraid of the asymmetrical as I'm a beginner and have difficulty in understanding so many abbreviations and techniques. But your video made things so clear, thanks for uploading this, it's a confidence booster! I'm getting pass some of my preconceptions about shawl knitting, still baby steps but that's something :) so, thanks again!

Dear Fiber Spider - thanks for your cool video collection. I am usually a crocheter and am trying (struggling. actually) with learning to knit. I have started this "easy" shawl about 30 times and every time.. eventually I see a mistake and I try to unravel and pick it up - and it always does not work. Crochet is so easy in this respect! I can see the hole, or see that I forgot whether I was on a YO row or what ever else I could have messed up on - are there tips and secrets you can share or send me to? Thanks - learning ~albeit slower than I'd like ;D

Exactly what I have been looking for! I'm a slow learner...the other tuts with stitch markers & remembering to keep 4 sts on the 1 side etc. was confusing me. This will do just fine. I understand the pattern, but when you reach the wide section, does the pattern automatically decrease back to the point , like when you start? If not how do you decrease back down to the starting point, so that beginning and end are similar?

I would be careful and wary about using different fibers for one project that you plan on washing since they react differently and can shrink leaving you with what looks like cooked bacon, lol

Thank you, I often have a death grip when knitting so lately my solution is going up in needle size. Typically one would use size 8 for worsted weight yarn, I mostly use size 10 these days - works like a charm for me. Most importantly - do what works for you! 😉

It's totally a matter of personal taste 😊 I like the long top edge to be at least the length of my arms outstretched from fingertip to fingertip. When the piece is on circular needles it can be tricky to determine how it will look layed out flat so I recommend checking out this video on how to use a lifeline kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmHZgpaZmbSUgpo I hope this helps answer your question 😉

Yes to both questions. I just prefer size 10s because it gives me a looser drape, and the k2tog method as a personal preference.

Thank you for making this video! I just found this pattern and needed a video to show me exactly how it was done. I LOVE this pattern and plan to make a BUNCH of these in every color I have! This video is great. I don't know how you can use bamboo needles, I can't stand the drag on them. I am using ChiaoGoo needles that I get on Amazon. They are super slick and the cord doesn't Stay in the bent position so many of them do. I love these needles. Worth every penny. Thank you again for this!!

+kaberle7 you are so very welcome! I love the simplicity of the pattern, and the shape is great for a skinnier shawl that can be used more as a scarf. Versatility is a wonderous thing, no? Actually, I use those bamboo needles only because they are double pointed needles (dpns), which makes their length ideal for close up filming purposes. If you are looking for a great set of needles, my FAVORITES are Addi Turbos! They are super slick, nickel plated I think, and are so smooth/quick to work with!
