Troy, with the screws, don’t bury them in epoxy. When the CB case is glued up, and cured, remove the screws and then fill. To withdraw the screw, drive it in a quarter turn and then back it out. I do this especially with sacrificial parts like rub rails. When it comes time to replace, just run an electric planner along it without having to worry about bits of metal ruining your blade. When build I try to get as much metal out as possible. The epoxy is stronger than screws, but maybe not bolts. Methylated spirits clean epoxy. I pour the used spirits into an old bottle. The dissolved epoxy settles to the bottom and you have clean, reusable, spirits for next clean.

I like the point with regard to sacrificial parts. The reason I'm using permanent screws, is because I'm using ply. The epoxy is indeed strong, but I want a guarantee against the ply lamination failing. Maybe a bit over the top.

I like the glassing part of the build and like you I prefer using a flexible plastic squeegee or roller as much as possible. As you pointed out it is less expensive but I think it also does a better job of wetting out the cloth and waste less time and resin. I also understand the time constraints involved when you are splitting your time between the build, family, especially one that's growing like yours, and other obligations like.........maybe a farm. You've really demonstrated your all around impressive talents to us as has Pascale as well, and I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of others besides me that appreciate that you video all this and share it with us. Boat launch tomorrow..............right ?

Hi Troy. I am no expert and you probably know all about this but on all the large flatter sections of glass I have found using peel ply cuts the finishing time and labour by 3/4 at least, especially if you are going to paint the project, and lets you apply a much more consistent layer of glass/resin. It also makes it pretty easy to wet out and apply multiple layers of cloth while keeping everything smooth/feathered out. Thanks for your efforts with the videos!.

In stead of using a bristle brush, a silicon basting brush works really well, the resin doesn’t stick to the silicon, and they clean up really easily for use over and over and over.

Great tip. I've used a silicon spatula before, so I can see this working really well.

when finishing fiberglass use non textured plastic wrap and tape it tight over the area being glassed this will put a very smooth Finnish on the project almost eliminating the need for sanding also you can squeegee the extra resin out from under the film and it will stay in place with a little care on your part you can fair it and maneuver it before it sets instead of sanding it off later be sure to tape only the edges of the film and let the film and tape extend outside the wetted area so it will stick and hold

I haven't seen this technique - I'll have to try it out. Thanks for letting us know.

I am a hobby boatbuilder so understand building bit by bit as time allows :) its actually a fun way to build it spreads cost and effort important when you consider we do it for fun! Always keep that in mind, financially its cheaper to go out and buy a boat for all sorts of reasons. However a boat you built yourself though is so much fun to own and use. That's actually a useful idea with the stain, it will work pretty well I think.
@FreeRangeLiving7 ай бұрын
Spreading the expense really does count, especially as by filming it, we can claim it from the tax man! Regardless, it's a very good point.

Great explanation, thank you for letting us watch! I`m pretty much where you are with your build (building a Navigator) so you're giving me a sneak peek 🙂 Short question if I may: what thickness are you calculating per layer of fiberglass? My plans call for 60mm CB thickness, so I'd need to trimm down my overall board thickness to accommodate fiberglass thickness.
@FreeRangeLiving7 ай бұрын
The plans for our boat specify width of laminated blank, then 1 layer boat cloth. That seemed well within the 5mm allowance. The other 2 layers on the shaped part have greater clearance because it has had some stock removed. There was lots of space so I never gave it much thought.

Always enjoy your vids, thanks. I noticed you didn’t sand the inside of the centreboard case between glassing ( which dryed ) & painting. That saves a lot of sanding if you can just paint over?
@FreeRangeLiving7 ай бұрын
The epoxy wasn't 100% cured, so subsequent coats can go straight on. Good chemical bond, where sanding cured epoxy relies on mechanical bonding.

gday troy, just started building a pathfinder also, am at template stage so your videos are incredibly well timed, thank you so much. I have studied plans pretty well and am a little concerned the lower log on the outside of the centre case is in the wrong spot on the plans, comparing centre case plans to frame 4 plans, it doesn't seem to line up. the number 240 in between ends of logs on centre case (do you know what this 240 corresponds to? to me the log that picks up the centre thwart seat is correct but the log that picks up the forward bunk decking is questionable. I hope I am wrong and you might be able to set me straight, otherwise if not the earlier you know the better i thought. Also how do I support you financially, very happy to sling you a few bucks for creating this vids, they are awesome and you have taught me a lot already. Thankyou.
@FreeRangeLiving7 ай бұрын
Hi Alister, with regards that 240 measure if memory serves, I was also immediately suspicious of it and couldn't make sense of it. My solution was to set my protractor off of the plans and draw the angle aft from the 295 mark on the case leading edge. Have you joined the JW facebook page? I have found it a useful resource, especially using the search function. In any case, I'm happy to give you any insights I may have stumbled over. Thank you for the offer of a few shekels. We have a couple of links in the description of each video for PayPal or our Patreon page. Patreon is a recurring pledge of any amount you choose from $1, payable each time we upload a video and PayPal is for one-offs. There is also the Super thanks function through KZbin which remains a mystery to me, except we do kmow KZbin takes a decent cut from those, which seems a bit egregious. Anyway, thanks for the message and good luck!
@alistersandow7 ай бұрын
Thanks. perhaps as you have made frame 4 you could check height from bottom of frame to top edge where doubler goes for front bunk deck area and compare with doubler on centre board case to bottom of boat, both should line up, hope it does. I will make an offering over on patreon, keep it up the videos and boat build loving it.
