In this third Fiddly Bits episode I show a recent purchase of turret lathe, capstan, or screw machine tooling, talk about getting some fake Sandvik carbide, and a thank you to my subscribers.

Gday Eddie, there’s plenty of tooling knock offs out there, there’s some interesting looking tooling in the lot, thanks for sharing mate, cheers

Thanks Matty. I agree, just never thought I would be sent them without asking for them:-)

Just remember carbide tooling is happiest at faster speeds and feeds.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Right, I always try to run them faster. My new lathe will help with that, many more speeds than the three on the old one which was slow, a bit faster, and warp speed.

Looks like a type of tangential die holder also a rear mount toolpost for a turret lathe , all sorts of goodies there . If you lived just down the road i would buy most of it for my capstan lathe !!! Cheers .

Max, If you were close I would give you most of it too see it put it use. Still if there is a few pieces that interest when I go through them, let me know. We might be able to find a cheap enough bird with enough strength to carry them your direction. I actually have a few parts going in a container to New Zealand in a few months, if the seas don't swallow it. All the best! Eddie

So far, in my home shop this cheap carbide has worked well, better then the cheap brazed carbide tooling. And it's not just Sandvik they are counterfeiting. Two years ago, I was seeing packs of 10 from China for less then $3.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
It's funny, I knew about the fake stuff on eBay but never figured they would just send it to me direct unsolicited from China. But I agree, it seems to work fine for the cost, and cuts better than even the older USA brazed carbide cutters I have. The real stuff definitely lasts longer but longer in my shop really means near forever. 10 pieces and 2 side each, I doubt I will need to buy more of the authentic stuff in the next 10 years. Thanks for watching!

screw machines run on cams turret lathes are hand operated typically. screw machines have cams that can interact with tooling on the turret so some tools can only be used on screw machines.

I used to work for Sandvik. Dirty, dirty, skeezy, underhanded company. These definitely look like fakes, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they were some sort of factory rejects that they just sold on the gray market.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Plot twist, lol. That is interesting. Do they have production in China?
@joels76052 жыл бұрын
@@theeddies I'm not sure. I didn't work with their machine tools division. I worked with their heavy equipment division. It was crazy. Under-designing load bearing parts, major suspension linkages (also under designed) snapping and nearly killing people, no engineering stamps on anything, they forged certifications and paperwork on structural drawings.... they would actively not pay vendors and subcontractors and then they'd try to sue everybody within a 10 mile blast radius. You need a team of Philadelphia lawyers just to clean their office bathroom. Just a garbage company. ...but now that you say that, they did use a number of Chinese subcontractors for steel fabrication. The steel was decent enough. I don't think the Chinese were to blame for any of the shenanigans.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
@@joels7605 I would not blame the Chinese either, they will produce to specs, it would be up to Sandvik to do QC and accept or not.

It's more stuff than I thought. The angle plates remind me of Suburban tools.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
So I just did some quick searching and found an old angle with a similar plate on it. I think I could make out a few details in the video that I could not see when looking at it, am going to check it more closely today. That would be awesome, I could retire.

I would be vary wary about reselling anything that you have personally imported. As I understand it in most countries as the importer you bear all liabilities as though you were a domestic manufacturer.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Good point. I don't do import in bulk, but when I order something direct I will often order a few more to resell. Just to make my money back. I always describe where it came from and what to expect in my ads. I would never sell these in Sandvik labeled boxes, but would describe them as what they are "Chinese made and labeled as 4225 grade but of unknown quality" All the best, Eddie
