Especially if you are trying to convey how an o.c.d. person would do such a task. Cleaning is just as, if not more important than stoning. You showed cleaning the stones, which I.M.O. is less relevant to the task at hand.

Hello Chinggu! It’s amazing the grinding slop you can find in brand spanking new chucks!!!! Even in some mega buck chucks. Your really a super machine person! I don’t know how you can be sooooooooooo informed on so many aspects of shop knowledge???? The only thing I know about electrical is how to reverse the spindle on 3 phase system when it been hooked up wrong. Even when I do, I’m absolutely terrified I’m going to be electrocuted!!! Can’t wait for your next videos????

I purchased a 'affordable' 5C collet chuck with D1-8 mount backplate from eBay a few years ago. The brand was H&H, unknown. But it was not a zero set. And had extreme runout. That runout was worse the further from the chuck, so it had a conical error as well as simple concentricity. I ended up buying a Bison brand chuck and replaced the junk version. Lesson learned. There are few import (from PRC) that I've found to ever have good lathe chucks. Sloppy jaws, so bell mouthed contact brand new is an issue with 4 jaw independent chucks. 3 jaw chucks with extreme runout (25 thou, typical). But I've had good luck with 1 brand that has a symbol of Saturn (the planet) that seems to be pretty good. I have no idea of their company name as I can't read Mandarin. I learned to just buy Bison and never deal with runout issues. It's a good thing my chuck buying days are over, as the price is 3x what I paid in 2004 for the 12 inch 6 jaw Bison and backplate.

Thanks Bruce. This video was odd. It took 26 takes just for the intro which is a lot. It usually takes 3 or 4 takes. There are about 7 hours worth of raw footages for this 18 minute video. People that haven't made a video and complain have no idea the amount of work goes into providing these free videos.

But it was enough to convince me that you folks that do the "maker videos" are woefully under appreciated. Such great training examples for so many things for those that want to learn this stuff. Great video, My own personal opinion regarding using grease, is simply…Don’t… It just acts like a magnet for dirt and metal chips, and as there are no fast moving parts or high temperatures there’s really no need… All I’ve ever used on drill and lathe chucks is a light coating of a light oil like 3 in one., and I’ve never had any problems or concerns…. After time grease becomes hard and can actually seize a chuck… I recently bought an unused Pratt Griptru chuck extremely cheaply as it was seized solid..I dismantled it to find the original grease had set like varnish…after a thorough clean and oil it now works like a dream… Using a light oil makes future maintenance so much easier

Hey, great tip regarding cleaning precision ground flat stones. I've never seen that before. Certainly going to use it though. Yuchol, do you have any issues with KZbin and copyright? I've noticed you use some non-elevator style music clips in your videos. I got one of my videos flagged because there was a Fleetwod Mac track playing on a P.A. at the venue where I was filming. Super annoying because YT said they would just mute the audio as a "solution". Cheers, Preso.

Thanks Mark. As far as the music goes, all mine are royalty-free. If you Google "KZbin Audio Library", you can go to free audio library that KZbin offers. There are thousands of songs which you can filter by genre, mood or artist. Hope this helps!

Traditionally a backing plate is made of cast iron for stability. I wonder if that method is still in use.

I noticed although cast iron is used, higher ends ones are steel. In fact, Bison offers "semi steel" for higher end models, also suppose to handle higher RPM, which doesn't come into play for my manual machines. Thanks!

I just received my Matthews 5C chuck on Monday . For the reasonable price and true set feature it’s a great deal. Enjoyed your video, it was really helpful filled with great ideas . Stoning the drive plate being one great idea. I note it has a ball oiler port , will you be using oil in yours ? And what type . I have decided to use the collet locating screw as my locating reference point to the spindle zero stamped mark . Thanks BB

The problem with most of these importers is that because the products are, shall we say, inexpensive, they don’t inspect any of it. It comes from the factory, goes to their warehouse, and on to the customer. That doesn’t mean the product is bad, as more recent Chinese manufacture has gotten much better. But the very cheapest, no brand units, are at the very bottom of the quality stack. Precision Matthew’s, Grizzly, Shars and a couple others tend to be on the better side. But as a result of the pricing, small touches in the finishing usually isn’t done, as that costs more to do than you would think. Top chuck manufacturers recommend (and may even make) a high moly chuck grease. And yeah, don’t skimp on it.

The holes between the mating surfaces need to be slightly countersunk and then deburred and only then use the PGS. If you just use the PGS, there is a very sharp edge that can form an upturned burr the next time a bolt goes through. I'm not impressed by the quality of their products. Sometimes it is better to get a used machine and restore it.

Those studs don’t need to be tight. The notch clocks the cam and retains the stud as well.

No, they don't need to be tight. But they have to go in far enough so the camlock actually pulls the chuck tight onto the lathe spindle. The notch on the stud exists solely for the screw to register on those stud so they don't unscrew.
