Lmao no. Why would Magnus told FIDE that he’d make sure not to play in jeans the following day if he wanted out? It’s very simple. FIDE has been wrong for the chess community for a very, very long time. This had nothing to do with a pair of jeans. I personally think that dress codes are very bad in 2024... I mean he isn't going to a game naked and if they want to wear clothing that makes them look like bums then let them look like bums. The old saying that you look good you feel good you play good works for everything and to me Jeans is what I call casual. It's not PJ's... It's regular street clothing. And Ben the GM Ben... that Ben is right... People who want power will do anything to have power over other people and to me that is what happened here. Nobody with a sober mind cares that Magnus was wearing jeans.

1. Magnus should have changed. 2. Fide should have fined him for each game but still let him play. Ok, you get fined each game but you still get to play.

I think Magnus got angry, and that getting him angry was a bad tactical move from FIDE. A blunder. In history there are four legends that stands out. Paul Morphy, Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen. Only one of them was attending this FIDE-show, and its a bad thing to make him angry. If FIDE had discussed the sitution with Stockfish, I think Stockfish would have advised them to let the players wear sneakers and jeans, and to give players armageddon after 4 or 6 extragames ending equal.

@@sparksdrinker5650 As much as I can agree with FIDE being led by dunces, it really isn't that hard to follow the rules. There isn't a reason in the world why I should know the rules of chess better than a world champion, but I demonstrably do, as do thousands and thousands of other competitive chess tournament players. And if he does know those rules, and is willfully breaking them anyway, then he is automatically violating the rule about not behaving in a way that brings chess into disrepute. The tournament wouldn't be run without the organizers. One is obligated to abide by their rules, it's very simple to those who know how to play chess. Apparently Carlsen doesn't know how to play chess, as he's having a lot of difficulty with the rules, so I question your claim that he plays chess while FIDE plays checkers.

@@RobsMiscellania I disagree with your take. Magnus knows the rules as well as anyone. However, for this particular event, the language surrounding the wearing of jeans was vaguely written on FIDE’s website for this event. “Jeans are generally not considered to be business attire.” That means in some scenarios that jeans are considered to be business attire. FIDE failed to clarify here and the way they applied the rule on the dress code was not fairly enforced. I believe it was Nepo (please correct me if it wasn’t him) who was given a warning that his sweater was a uniform violation. He changed and that was that. However, with Magnus, they didn’t give him the same treatment. They waited until after the first game and immediately fined him. They didn’t give him a warning and tell him he needs to change before the next round or he’d be fined. They just slapped him with a fine on the spot instead of trying to correct it professionally before the first game. They then allowed him to be paired and play the second game. That’s when they demanded he change immediately or he wouldn’t be paired for the third game and would have to forfeit that round. FIDE’s approach with Magnus was unprofessional, very heavy handed, and at odds with their own rule about not bringing disrepute to the game. It’s no secret that FIDE’s CEO and Magnus have had some heat for a number of years now and this just brought everything from a simmer to a roiling boil and made headlines in mainstream news outlets that don’t traditionally cover chess. While I’m *not* saying that Magnus is 100% correct and blameless here, what I am saying is that FIDE went about this the wrong way and that Magnus’s reaction can be justified.

Without rules slowly chaos will creep in and so will a lack of discipline. If FIDE did not enforce the law strictly on him on the spot and gave him time actually then I think they are correct and also practically generous. If Magnus hadn't been (severely) underperforming in that championship, he would've just changed instead of being a drama queen about those jeans. Whether you like a dress code or not, when you knowingly enter an event with a certain dress code, stick to it. Or don't enter that event if you don't like the rules. I lost whatever little respect I had left for FIDE not because they enforced the rule, but because they backpedalled on it. If this were some random FM, people would expect that person to just suck it up (and rightly so). But Magnus is a big fish, so he's entitlted to special treatment. And people are cheering for that. Go figure. Then don't complain whenever the world outside of chess works in that exact way...

All you used to do was put me down But I found a way to pick myself up off the ground And all you used to do was criticize me But now I found the good and I emphasize it see You would always get so sensitive And try to turn your transgressions into my guiltiness But now I'm certain of the way I live And what I'm responsible for in this twisted game

This is so unbelievably backwards from FIDE... Magnus is DECENTLY dressed... Everything fits really nicely... And lets be honest - Magnus is ALWAYS one of the most well dressed (if not THE most) of all players - ever in any tournament or championship... And here his jeans are of VERY good quality - the guy is a millionair - his jeans are probably expensive... So why all the fuzz? Simply because of the material? How would this fly if Magnus was a Woman? Everyone would be screaming how much they are bigots, and sexists (?) and we all know it... Magnus is in the right here - common sense should prevail... If I wear 1,000$ jeans - they are not really "jeans" - they are 1,000$ clothing that just happens to be made of a particular material...

Yea but, art and beauracrats don't mix well, but dressing professionally, in the eyes of the public, help to make it a profession. US players have always struggled to be treated professionaly. One rich player dissing the lesser mortals?

I am on Magnus' side, there is nothing wrong with wearing jeans in a chess tournament...regardless of the level of chess tournament. Magnus just wanted to wear something comfortable so he chose jeans. FIDE's dress code is outdated and ridiculous.

so youre agreeing that FIDE's wrong, cool, magnus also showed up wearing those knowing full well the rules and knowing that FIDE cant make a rule change mid tournament just to keep him in, or itd be even worse

"FIDE says dress code is in place to "create a positive and inspiring image for chess... it will showcase a level of professionalism that reflects the prestige and elegance of this global chess event." Uhhh, sounds like an organization that doesn't want to progress and enjoys a level of elitism. I understand some kind of dresscode, but wearing jeans isn't on par with wearing something with disrespectful lettering, or something sexually explicit, or even something with flamboyant colors or designs that are distracting to other players or viewers. This is a strange hill to die on for an organization that needs him way more than he needs them. Ironically, someone wearing jeans who is more casual and connects to a younger audience is exactly what you need if you don't want to disappear into irrelevance.

FTR I fully understand WHEN a dress code is a must example police officers a security officer others NEED to know who is in charge it is no different than asking for ID entering a secure space you NEED to know who is who. However like everything in life there are lines to cross there is no definite line that says right here don't cross THAT line there is only common sense and understanding what is truly important
