@@vibovitold That is inaccurate for at least 2 reasons: - There is a 3500 dollars as a reward for the haft point, furthermore begins 4th (which would result in even less prize money). - Furthermore chess is not blunder proof... And Ian wasn't really playing for a draw, because he had some occasion to dry out the position that he did not jump over... Fabi was in time trouble and a mistake in a complex position is not impossible even for a player like Fabi. And it can help to recover from the tournament knowing you have give it your best. Considering the money aspect alone, which is not huge but still exist, he has not interest whatsoever in giving the win to Fabi... The harsh aspect of chess is also that in the end Fabi played really poorly for a player of his strength and did not win the game, period. I do feel sorry for him, but that doesn't help the fact that he did not win, when he could have and basically had to.

Please cut the woman some slack! Even grandmasters blunder. She gave them an opportunity to be philosophical but when they demurred, she didn't badger. She felt the grave tragedy of the situation, asked questions for the sake of the chess historical record, then sensitive to the situation, diplomatically declined to ask more questions when there were no further ones from the press pool and closed the session (~10 minutes). Why give up when your opponent wastes all his time? You know that when he has to make 6 moves in 3 minutes with life changing results on the line, you will have the advantage. I really don't know why super GMs let themselves get low on time like Fabi did. There isn't a format where where one player gets 2 hours and the other gets 17 seconds. That is a joke game that someone like Magnus plays when he is drunk and playing against a couple of teenage girls. Why? Because that isn't fair. Time matters, a lot.

I think Fabi will find it harder to swallow. Over the last 10-11 years, he has been easily the second best chess player in the world, the third highest rated chess player in history, and the closest to come to Magnus's level in Classical. After Magnus, if anyone deserved to be the World Champion from this generation, it had to be Fabi. In case of this tournament Nepo was doing excellent from the start though, in the top spot almost until the end, whereas Caruana was underperforming initially and only began catching up later on, scoring 3 wins (and a draw) in 4 consecutive games, which is quite a streak. Complicated is one thing, but these guys are playing for hours (I believe the entire game lasted for like 6 hours, or close?). They're both exhausted towards the end. Had that game been adjourned half-way through, and resumed the next day - like they used to do decades ago - the accuracy would be very different.

The people saying that Nepo should’ve resigned are horrible people. Nepo played his best and you’re saying it’s useless. There was a money reward for placings. In terms of absolute playing strength he might even be THE strongest (because modern players obviously have an edge over the players of the past). Magnus had that match under control, knew he could draw the classical games and win the blitz, as he did. Magnus never had Nepo under control and was almost down 2 after the first few games. Then Nepo cracked, but he was a huge threat in a rematch. Sometimes A beats B, B beats C, C beats A, which is strongest? But Nepo was the biggest threat against Magnus for sure. Maybe Fabi would have had good chances against Ding, although he could not handle Magnus.

Fabi had so many opportunities and he failed all of them. The endgame is really the part of the game where computers shine so far above humans. We look at the evaluation and wonder how these guys could blunder so bad, but in the moment, after several hours of play, with queens on the board and both players with somewhat open kings, the game is just immeasurably complex. Even the game's best are basically swimming in chaos at that point. You can't blame them at all, and that's to say nothing of having the pressure of your entire career on your back.
