This was a very weird event. The three clearly best players tied 2-4 and the winner is a prodigy who's good, but clearly neither ready nor the current best. (Don't get me wrong, but 1) nobody would say Gukesh is better than Fabi, Hikaru or Nepo, head to head, at the moment; 2) Gukesh is not even in his 'finished' form and it feels strange that a player could become WCC before reaching his peak/prime.) Having said that and as heartbreaking as it is, Fabi brought this one upon himself by spoiling the win a WCC definitely should've converted, so that's a glimpse of fairness to this mess. Ponomariov, Khalifmann and Kasindzhanov were random WCCs in Kasparov era; Ding and, potentially, Gukesh are random WCCs in Magnus'. That being said, you claim Gukesh doesn't need my validation, yet you go out of your way in his defense. ;) Just ask yourself if you'd bet all your money in Gukesh in a match against either Fabi, Nepo or Hikaru. The obvious example - Alireza literally farmed his way up and ended up having such a poor tournament. These top players only ever play invitationals to keep their ratings in tact.
