@@midasrockstar Don't know if this is sarcastic, but Castro and Cuba tried to keep good relations with the US and immediately after the revolution visited the white house but Eisenhower refused to even meet with him and Nixon was a douchebag to him. Then the US soon after embargoed and as a small developing country they were pushed into the arms of the Soviets. The reason the Soviets placed missiles in Cuba is because of the US placement of missiles in Turkey pointed at them. Also, Cuba was in fear of being invaded (Bay of Pigs etc).
@Zach-qn8mn4 жыл бұрын
@Ludd Zarko I mean this is all easily accessed information I’ll give you links to sources. It’s documented after the overthrow of Batista in 1959 Castro flew to the US and met with government officials. By this point the US had been funding Batista and giving tanks and planes and let him flee to the US but Castro was still open to relations with the US. Eisenhower went and golfed to avoid Castro and Nixon talked to him and was demanding him to do stuff. He left the US. By January 1961 the US had trade embargoes placed on Cuba and in April attempted the bay of pigs invasion. After that, Castro announces that Cuba is a socialist state and they’re becoming allies with the Soviet’s. The soviets communicated with Castro and Castro wanted to defend Cuba from invasion as well as soviets wanted to show the US that they can do the same thing since the US had ballistic missiles in Italy and Turkey.
@Zach-qn8mn4 жыл бұрын
@Ludd Zarko also, in terms of relevance this video is of Castro speaking English in the early 60s, and the comment I was replying to was blatant slander and misinformation on the situations of that time.

Personal observations: I am an EU Citizen. I visited Cuba in 2004, I never felt in danger at any point. I walked through the poor areas of Havana. I was approached by many confidence men and prostitutes. I played Chess with locals on the street I never felt in danger or threatened. I visited USA in 2006. The homeless were so desperate they threatened violence. I was advised by hotel staff not to talk to homeless. I was in Downtown LA just walking to the bus station and I had gangs pointing gun (signs) at me and wolf whistling. I don't know enough to pretend to be an expert, but from my experience Cuba is a safer place to be than USA. EDIT: Gun signs, not guns

Castro wasn't perfect by any means, he had problems both personal and in how he handled government. But he really seemed like someone of the people, much like Lenin. All my life I was always told Castro was an evil dictator, but after I read up more on Cuban history and the revolution I realized it is much more complicated. While Castro wasn’t a saint, he made a lot of progress in Cuba and I’m sure he could’ve done more if it weren’t for the embargo. No doubt that Fidel Castro was a controversial figure. He wanted change and achieved his revolutionary aim with 82 men. Caught up amidst the cold war he was willing do negotiate but was not met by no one when he travelled to America, he had very little choice but to side with Russia hence che wasn’t so agreeable with the idea and they fell apart. I still think JFK was an honourable man and had not the CIA lied to him regards to the bay of pigs, Fidel could’ve achieved an agreement with Kennedy. Cuba suffered a lot during the fall of the soviet union and the blockade made it hard for cuban people and its economy. Fidel should’ve worked towards normalising ties with America after-all they are your neighbours. For the greater good of your people and country a leader should work towards dialogue and peace and normalise ties with your neighbouring country.

You do realise that the CIA has attempted to assassinate Castro 100s of times. How to form postive relationships with a group who will use that to stab you in the back, the case of Castro, literally?
