Thank you so much for the video! Here's where I am stuck: Let's say I have 100 dollars to invest. Fidelity 500 Index fund is priced at $134.64 with its last dividend payment at $0.59 and expense ratio at .01%, so I could buy .74 shares. Fidelity Zero Total Market Index fund, priced at $14.11 per share with its last dividend payment at $0.17 and no commission. I could buys 7.09 shares. I would get more dividend payouts with the Fidelity Zero index fund, but Fidelity 500 seems to have lower risk and will have better growth. This is just one case scenario. So, my question is is it better to buy cheaper index fund that I can get many shares and a greater dividend amount or should I buy a more expensive one with lower risk?

Good question! Vanguard is CLOSE with fees and their ETF line-up makes it easier for an investor to have their account with any brokerage and still buy vanguard investments. I personally like the zero funds in my 401k/IRA along with a growth fund like CPOAX or Fidelity Contrafund/Growth. For my taxable accounts, I am much bigger on VTI/VOO/BBUS/SFY/VOT/etc because it is good to take advantage of tax lots when selling out of those funds to take income, even if you don't expect to do that for a few decades, and they also enable you to do tax-loss harvesting in a much more straightforward way. Also, buying at times like this when the market is more volatile seems like much less of a ripoff with the ETFs than Mutual Fund as you can set limit orders. Even in the tax advantaged accounts I may buy say VTI now and then roll it into the Zero total index fund when I think the price is more stable and I am not trading blind on whatever the price was at market close for the fund, which could be pretty brutal on a day when the market decides to rally up +3% just to drop 2% the next day.
@deboratrujillo26913 жыл бұрын
So if you're starting late is good to have an index fund with a more aggressive return and a bit more expensive on its ratio. Like CPOAX

Hi, I've had a fidelity freedom fund and am 62. But I dont have alot and while I'm still healthy and can work I'm ready to make up for lost time. I opened a FZROX, I think that's total market.. Should I open an FXAIX 500? @AverageJoeInvestor3 жыл бұрын
GREAT QUESTION JULIE! The total stock market and the S&P 500 have a lot of crossover, especially when you factor in that they are both cap-weighted indexes. This means the largest companies get the heaviest weighting. IF you go and look at the top 10 holdings for the Total Market and the S&P 500 they will be EXACTLY the same. If you want to own them both you can, but you don't NEED TO. THANK YOU for watching Julie, GOOD LUCK and THANK YOU for leaving your $0.02 in the comments! 😎👍🏻

Is it a good idea to invest in both or just one of these index funds?
@AverageJoeInvestor3 жыл бұрын
GREAT QUESTION ADRIAN! Honestly, there is a lot of crossover between the S&P 500 and the Total Stock Market so there is a lot of redundancy but there is no downside to investing in both. IF you wanted to choose just one I would personally choose the Total Stock Market because there are no requirements to get into the index except market capitalization whereas the S&P 500 has specific requirements. For example, TESLA had a material weighting in the Total Market much sooner than the S&P 500. I hope that answers your question Adrian! Awesome information, Joe! .. and very much appreciated! I know a fair amount about Tech Analysis. Yes, Dollar Cost Analysis makes sense, but do you know if it's possible on Fidelity to pull out completely from these index funds (where to put the $ I'm not sure), while the S&P500 (Large Cap) is coming down .. then re-investing that $ when you see it's about to climb again? And if it is possible, how often does Fidelity allow this? Daily? Weekly? Wonder if they'd label you a Day Trader if done too often? Also, do you have any idea if you can transfer $ from your 401k to an Index Fund account? My current employer is with Vanguard, but past was with Fidelity. I've read 401k $ is more transferable if no longer employed with that employer .. but not sure about this. I'll be calling Fidelity and asking on Monday, but thought I'd ask you too. Again .. much appreciated vids! I've watched a few now .. looking forward to the others! And yes .. subscribing!

What i dont really understand is the difference between the Fidelity zero total market index fund (FZROX) and Fidelity total market index fund (FSKAX). I looked at both of them and they both invest in same companies, and the percent allocations were only different in a few areas and by such a small amount. So what am i missing? Because the only other difference would be that the zero one has zero expenses, but the traditional one (FSKAX) does have expenses. So why not just choose zero one? Of course im missing something, appreciate any help.
@andreadelacruz5903 жыл бұрын
The zero accounts don't allow for automatic allocation. So if you plan to deposit on your own without automation it's a small difference between the two and Fidelity charges less. In general, it seems small but will certainly add up over time.

Also how frequently they pay you dividends is different (see 17:53). Joe mentions the Zero funds pay annually (December) and the regular ones pay quarterly. Although, I will note that the Fidelity website shows FSKAX is paid in April and December, not quarterly. If you feel this will make a difference for you, then it's something to consider.

@@andreadelacruz590 Wait how would it add up over time? If your saying the zero funds dont allow automatic investing then thats definitely a matter of convenience. But if I just manually put money in on a consistent basis then I could make the same as if I did on the non zero accounts. So just to be clear is there an actual difference in how much you would make other? Or is it just convenience

Hi Joe! Thanks for the video. Do you recommend investing $6000 in my Roth IRA at the beginning of the year or set recurring monthly investments?
@Ruffian1443 жыл бұрын
If you can, put the 6k into your roth account in January, but dont invest it all right away. Set a small amount to purchase mthly & keep some cash on the side in your roth in case the market drops. if it does drop, you can take advantage of the stock sale by using the cash on the side to make an additional purchase. If it doesn't drop, you've been dollar cost averaging so some of the money has been working for you. For this tactic to succeed, you have to check the stock market news DAILY.

GREAT QUESTION OLIVIA! To Kam's point, you can purchase fractional shares so regardless of the price of the investment you are purchasing, you can get started for as little as $1.00 =) || THANK YOU for watching Olivia and for leaving your $0.02 in the comments! 😎👍🏻

With ETFs you can set the price it sells at. I find every time I sell a mutual fund, it goes down at 4:00.

GREAT POINT -- I prefer myself to own ETF's as well. That being said, owning index funds with the ability to auto-invest is a great benefit to have as well. THANK YOU for watching Wilma and for leaving your $0.02 in the comments! 😎👍🏻

Can you (or anyone) explain what you mean by "If you're looking to retire soon, this is not for you". What does "soon" mean? Now or 5 years, 10 ? I'm starting late in investing and in my late 40s. If the Fidelity Index Fund is not good for me, then what would be better to try and catch up?
@AverageJoeInvestor3 жыл бұрын
HI GEORGE -- Let me see if I can clarify my thoughts for you. In order to find the right investment strategy, you need to know 3 important things: #1 What do you want to accomplish? #2 When do you need the money? #3 How much risk are you comfortable taking? Everybody falls somewhere different on these 3 questions. Anybody with a timeframe of LESS THAN 5 years might have a hard time taking the amount of risk necessary to earn the growth they want to achieve. That being said, most people with a 10-15 year time horizon should have no issue placing a significant amount of money into the stock market, at least in the beginning. Then it depends on how comfortable you are with risk. If it were me, and I was starting in my 40's and I wanted to achieve a considerable amount of growth before I retire, I would definitely be invested in index funds such as the Fidelity S&P 500 or the Fidelity ZERO Funds. As you get closer to when you want/need to retire, you would look to take risk off the table and move some money to safer assets. For me personally, my retirement strategy involves using dividend stocks to achieve recurring and growing dividend income through retirement with a goal of not having to draw down on any principal. Hope that brings a little clarity and I apologize for confusing you if I did. THANK YOU for watching George and for leaving your $0.02 in the comments! 😎👍🏻

Joe, I am a beginner investor and have got a late start in investing. My goal is to retire in the next 10 years. I want to get your opinion, I want to invest in both FSKAX & FXAIX.
@AverageJoeInvestor3 жыл бұрын
HI CARL! Thank you for leaving a comment! I don't think you need to invest in both funds because there is so much overlap between them. If it were me I would probably choose the total market because I get everything in the S&P 500 plus additional diversification amongst mid/small cap stocks. THANK YOU for watching Carl and for leaving your $0.02 in the comments! 😎👍🏻

So how does it work when you say, set it and forget get it? I buy once and I don't deposit anymore $? I can leave the same amount for a long time? I don't need to continue depositing $ if I don't want to and hopefully it will grow? Please make a video on how it works. I'm a newbie Thank you!
@dahianajimenez1573 жыл бұрын
"set it and forget it" can work both ways. #1 You can invest only once, don't deposit anymore, and as the price per share increases over time the value of your shares will increase (you initially bought it for less). For example, today you invest $6000 into FSKAX which bought you 60 shares, and years later those same 60 shares will be worth more than $6000. Therefore, if you sell those shares later on you will get back more than $6000.
@dahianajimenez1573 жыл бұрын
#2 You set up automatic investments. Meaning you set up your account to automatically take money out of your bank account and invest it into the fund you set. For example, you can set it to automatically invest $100 per month into FSKAX. There's usually an option to automatically invest any dividends that are paid to you too. Different banks have different policies for these. It allows for less manual work.
@dahianajimenez1573 жыл бұрын
#2 will grow your wealth more. Meaning, for example, typically, 10 yrs using #2 will earn you more money than 10 yrs using #1. However, I believe "set it and forget it" is more applicable to the types of funds Joe is talking about in this video (mutual funds or ETFs that contain lots of different types of stocks that steadily increase over the long run). If you purchase a specific stock (separately invest in one company), say TSLA, you have to constantly keep an eye out on the progress of the company.
