I'm a latecomer to FoG: Empires, having spent the last few years playing Civ VI & its DLCs et al., as well as the odd Cities Skylines and Transport Fever games, while hoping that Civ VII and/or Humankind might offer some needed relief in the near future. Without exaggeration, I've now peeked into well over a dozen channels offering FoG: Empires tutorials, and am sorely disappointed. Half of them somehow seem to have received early access at the time of release and are confusing blind walk-throughs with tutorials - though I should probably say stumble-throughs. One poster did boast that he had played the game for 15 turns, which apparently made him an expert; another spent minutes musing about what BCE and CE could possibly stand for, concluding that the "C" was probably short for Christ - I'm assuming one of our American brethren. Even the Slitherine tutorials are, though nicely done, not so much tutorials as short overviews of specific game aspects. This is the 1st channel I've run across that features a gamer who seems to have actually played the game and is able to offer a structured overview of features in a game with a slightly elevated learning curve. Am just completing Part 1, and am looking forward to parts 2, 3, ff. Well done. Many thanks for the upload.

5:43 Celts were a broad culture, Guals where a regional group within the Celts and Arverni were a specific tribe within the Gaulic group.

This really is one of the very best 'let's play' / tutorial style videos I've ever watched. You do an incredibly great job presenting it! Very helpful! I took Avernia too, but am going north to form the province first and then access the ocean later when I greater trading ability and/or fishery. Besides the special military unit you mentioned, the manual shows a number of benefits from province ownership. -thanks!

I bought this game, more, or less, when it was released, and have played a few games, but always felt that it was lacking any good, in depth tutorials, so I was really glad when I saw that you had started a series. I wanted to wait until you got several turns in before following along with you, and I know that there are a lot of random elements to this game, which is great, but means I will not always be able to make exactly the same choices as you, but I will try to make similar choices, and hopefully I will learn more than I have previously.

Hello SGD! There are a couple of small details that you are explaining wrong in this video. I have 200 hours or so in this game (no much i know) but i have read the entire manual some parts up to 5 times to make sure i knew all the details specially about combat. So, generals RATING DOES NOT GIVE more atack or defense it only give you bonus rolls. So if its 0 you have 1 roll, 1 you have 2 rolls and 2 you have 3 rolls. Now those bonus like ambusher and flanker give direct bonus atack or defense to all your troops. Plus in this game people think combat is random and you don't have control but they are wrong. You need to go and study the combat and then you predict if you are going to win or not based on frontage, terrain and army composition. If you understand combat in detail you can defeat stonger armies by chosing the best terrain, the best general for the job and sometimes, letting them run out of food. Anyway amazing job like always. If you want i can help you in this game cause i know a lot abou it. Thanks. Bye!

Frontage is pretty simple to explain. 1. Imagine that Units are hitpoints, 1 unit per 1 hp. 2. If each Unit does 1 point of damage, then a frontage of 8 means it can do up to 8 points of damage if there's 8 units. 3. If you have 9 units at 8 frontage, then its 8 points of damage, and 9 hitpoints. Lose 1 hp, you still have 8 units doing 8 points of damage. 4. Effectively, when you lose too many hitpoints, the army gets weaker and does less damage.

I’m following along and picked the Arverni in the 310 BCE scenario, but in my version (1.3.4, which I think is the latest), their strength is only 18

Interesting game, I may well go for it. Out of subject but I figured I would ask here since I suspect everyone is probably fans of these games. Back in the mid 90’s at around the time of the first Panzer General, I also had another in the same fashion but it was scenarios based on less well known wars. There was a scenario on the Austrian-Prussian war, the Franco-Prussian war, the Russo-Japanese war...it’s been killing me trying to remember the title of this game. I search quickly on the net and here but nothing came up. Anyone remember or had this game? Would have been around 1996-97

This game is amazing go for it. But wait for sales and DO NOT BUY the expansion unless you want to play Persia. Expansion is really umbalanced Persia almost always wins unless you are playing on a very low difficulty.

Was it a hex based sandbox kind of game? You might be thinking Age of Rifles- it covered most of the 19th century and very early 20th.
