Not quite sure about Kingdoms yet, but back with Empires, on modern machines, both games were light enough that you could often just keep both FoG2 and FoG:E open and running at the same time, so instead of quitting one and opening the other when exporting battles, you could just export, alt+tab, do the battle, and then alt+tab back.

Thanks for the very nice overview & summary! This was a great refresher for me. I previously played Empires and absolutely loved it, but it was a few years ago so I had forgotten some of the basics. Diving into Kingdoms now!

This is a great game. I have field of glory 2, medieval, empires and kingdoms all great historical games such as break from the ahistorical fantastical total war games of late.

Thanks DasTactic, really appreciate your work as always. This looks like a must try alongside FoG:E, which I loved - and looks superior to CK2/3 in some ways, and I appreciate the design sets the historical stage to play from, rather than nudging the player back towards history through scripting and events. If its anything like Empires, I'm sure this will be fantastic.

Thankyou for the informative video. I love Medieval History and would certainly enjoy this game... but I already have Empires, Crusader Kings III, Civilization VI, both Field of Glory II games and multiple versions of Total-War. I prefer having a balance of games, for varieties sake (ie. 1st person shooters, RPG's, SCI-FI, etc.), so I'm a little concerned that getting this new entry would be too much of a good thing for me and compete with life in general and what little remaining time I can spare! 🤨 Apart from the family additions and covering a later time-period, I'd like to know about any compelling reasons why gameplay is improved or expanded from Field of Glory Empires.
@levsharus58996 ай бұрын
Thank you for your great review of the game. Can you expand on differences between Empires and Kingdoms in your new video? Because I cannot see any so far. And especially I would like to know if they changed that annoying system of new buildings construction from Empires. When you chose a specialisation of a new construction but a particular building was picked up randomly by AI. And you never knew how to reach some particular building in a construction tree. I hated this system.

Are provinces like in Empires where they share resources if you control the critical mass, notably their food and infrastructure? If so is it again best to build one thing at a time? Or did they disable that and you are forced to be building something in every region?
@OrangeNash6 ай бұрын
How are turn times? The long turn times as the game progressed were the thing that put me of FOG: Empires. I notice Turn 1 took 40 seconds here, just wondering if that declines to 2 minutes by turn 100 - which it did for me in Empires. As my own turn was taking less than 2 minutes, you end up spending more of the game watching a progress bar than actually playing it.

Does this game have intrigue mechanics like Crusader Kings? Is it possible to win through strategic maneuvering and scheming?
@spookrockcity6 ай бұрын
Intrigue is mostly done by use of regional decisions. It's present in the game but in a much more macro state. Think of it as a much, much, more watered down of Crusader Kings when it comes to the grand strategy levers you have over the mechanics. Combat is king in the game due to the tie in with Field of glory 2 Medieval.

In Empires I was ok with the clunky battle export, switch game and load, because it was their first try and working out the kinks may not be worth it, for a co-op that might end up dead on arrival. But for the second game not fixing the number 1 QOL issue, when it has a clear solution, is just not ok.
@tiagoferreira53686 ай бұрын
The objective of this game and Empires was never for people to play the battles themselves. Like the devs said it was a BONUS feature for players who owned both games and for people who really liked both. Personally i think it shouldn't be possible to fight battles of this game on FoG Medieval. I had a lot of fun in both games but i rather play them separately because the system is too slow, takes too much time to fight even the smallest battles and the objective of Empires/Kingdoms is for you to be the supreme ruler not a general on the field. For that i have FoG battle games.
@endbringer2416 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was hoping they'd make it more seamless, but at the same time it probably really isn't worth the effort because just like in Total War most people will just auto-resolve majority of battles anyway. It's fun to fight a battle every once in a while to spice up the campaign, but it really isn't the point of these games.
@Steven-cf1ty6 ай бұрын
This project had fewer people working on it than you imagine. The guy acknowledged it would be better if fully integrated, but that's a highly demanding venture for what is ultimately just a fun side feature

I know I can't be the only person experiencing music and audio issues with the game. I have absolutely no music or sound in game, making it unplayable. I can play all other games with sound just fine. Just to test things out, I uninstalled and reinstalled the game 3 times and verified the files 3 times. I also just fired up FoG II, FoG II: Empires and FoG Medieval and the music/sound all work great in those games. Now I fire up Kingdoms. Dead. Nothing. I have 200 games and they all have sound, just not this one. The main menu buttons are cut off on the bottom of the screen. There are other UI problems. Really amateur stuff. I own all three of the FoG games and every SINGLE piece of DLC , so I have a right to complain. This is a day one mess. 36 hours later and I STILL CAN'T PLAY THIS GAME. NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER HERE. I know Slitherine is a good company, but someone dropped on the ball on quality testing on this game and I don't believe the steam positive reviews. This game has major bugs that warrant real criticism by the gaming media here. Where are they?

Recently replayed Field of Glory Empires and did not like it for the following reasons: - Didn't feel like I was specializing my regions, that I was just building everything everywhere. - No good way of managing slaves. - Outside of the satisfaction of painting the map and accruing legacy to win the game, there was often no good reason to go conquering. There was no kind of trade or loyalty or other bonus for expanding control over new areas, just more decadence to manage. Have they improved on that in this game?
@johnlawlor53056 ай бұрын
Yes the previous game needed a detailed management screen for viewing slave populations in the various regions which was lacking and largely boiled down to guesswork. To be fair, conquering many rich regions would quickly increase gold revenues and access to cheap units from provinces, and helped grow your empire and afford mercenary armies/buy into the many governmental decisions that allowed for faster power gains. Decadence was managed by constructing lots of Cultural buildings to stave off decadence. This could be automated with province AI also. But optimal route was still micromanaging the regions and it got tedious if you couldn't accept letting the AI imperfectly manage the provinces. Hopefully this one has solved some of that, but I'm unsure

You don't need FoG medieval. The battles are optional, not meant to be played often, and are there as a bonus for people who own both, rather than as a necessary feature of the game.
@Makkar0onii6 ай бұрын
What a weird game design. Forcing the player to quit the game just to 'Export a battle' onto another game. Then you have to quit the other game just to go back to your first game. Should have just made the game that uses elements of the other game as a 'Mod' by launching the game with the ability to use the other game while being in the first game. I understand that these kind of games are for long-play but closing and opening in between application is just going to make the game even longer to play. Maybe overall there is a limitation for the Kingdom game that only the developers know. Who knows.
@Steven-cf1ty6 ай бұрын
The dev has been very transparent about it. There's just not enough manpower on this game to thoroughly integrate Kingdoms with FoG Medieval just to skip the export system, when this is just a small bonus mechanic. It's just not worth the time and effort with this small of a team.
