Thanks again for posting another activation and the contact :) They came in steady for this one... I'm very impressed with the noise floor of that Mountain Topper rig...
@w4arb

absolutely! thank you for the contact. always a pleasure. Agreed on the mountain topper, it’s almost scary how quiet the noise floor is. I thought it meant it wouldn’t hear as good and had low RF gain. but I did A/B comparisons with the KX2 and it’s actually on par with the Elecraft on hearing weak signals. It’s just quiet!

Thank you for sharing Aaron. One of my goals as far as ham radio is to become an Extra. I am testing on October 9th so time will tell on that one. My other goal is to learn CW. Currently I am a member of the LICW Club. I have a FT-991A but, if I learn CW, I would love to buy one of those Mountain Toppers and do nothing but CW. One of my main goals in life. I also watch Thomas's videos. Thomas is definitely someone I look up to in the world of CW. Thank you again for sharing Aaron.

That's awesome about testing for the Extra and learning CW! I need to upgrade to Extra myself. Learning CW is a fun journey. Thomas is awesome and one of the main reasons I learned CW. Also, listening to videos of on-air CW is a great way to practice copying. Thank you for watching & 73!

@@w4arb Aaron, could you suggest one of those on-air CW videos. I just might check it out. Time is limited for me and I could use all the help I can. You wouldn't be talking about Morse Ninja would you?
@w4arb
@w4arb Жыл бұрын
@janiceemery2008 I mean videos like Thomas’ activation videos, my activation videos, Evan K2EJT is another good one; just videos where you can listen to CW contacts and hear exactly how they sound on the air. I would say CW sounds different on the air than it does on practice apps where there is no background noise, interference, fading, etc. Plus humans sending CW isn’t perfect spacing or timing either so you hear more of an “accent”. I hope that makes sense. I listened to Thomas Witherspoons videos for many hours to practice copying CW myself and it was very helpful.

Nice, sir Aaron! I got my Mag mount magnet with 3/8-24 receive threads, I may try it on the GRA vertical Sunday morning.

Thank you for the video! I'm going to be activating (I hope) this weekend in Tonto National Forest. One thing I will say, now that I've a few hunts under my belt and some radio time I have decided. Even after I get to where I can copy code at 15-20wpm I will always send my CQ's around 5-7 so the slower guys (Me right now) aren't intimidated into not responding.
@w4arb
@w4arb 9 ай бұрын
That’s a great approach! I know a few folks that do similar and keep their speed down and I admire it. I personally enjoy running around 20-23 because that’s the speed that CW stops sounding like individuals dits and dahs and starts sounding musical, and I have to enjoy it to stay motivated to keep doing it. But I’m always happy to slow down for slower hunters! 73 and good luck on your activation!!

@@w4arbThis is my issue with keyers. I send straight key and was taught to send the characters a bit faster than he WPM speed you want. Just space them a bit more, and obviously leave a proper additional space between words. That and I fumble too much on the keyer hi hi

Just went back and listened again and I missed that! Sorry about that. I wrote down the T and then you resent it . I just requested for the POTA admin to remove my log file so I can fix it and upload again with your call corrected. Thanks for the contact!! 73

Hey Aaron, thanks very much for the video! Just wondering... what are you using as a base for your BaMaKeY TP-III? 73, Lyndon - VE3IGS
@w4arb
@w4arb Жыл бұрын
Hi Lyndon, I was wondering when someone would ask! I had an old Vibroplex Code Warrior Jr that was broken. I took all of the components off of it and use the base as a magnetic base for my TP-III. I think cwmorse.us has a steel base that’s very similar in their accessories for $25. 73!

Hi Aaron, love your vids as i'm learning CW and learning a lot from you. just one thing !! Is there any chance you can zoom in a little bit so i can see you Log better as you write the call signs down. Regards Pete Melbourne Australia

Hi Pete! Thank you for the feedback! I’m working on that, looking for a document overhead camera mount that I can use for the logbook, then have a second camera view that shows more of me and the radio/key. I hope to have that figured out in the next week or two

That vertical did a great job. Easier up than the EFHW.
@w4arb
@w4arb Жыл бұрын
I agree! It goes up in just a few minutes and performs quite good. The only downside is it is a lot bigger to carry than a simple wire antenna with throw weight and line.

@@w4arb I was surprised it did so well for you at QRP. That encourages me to connect one a friend gave me to play with. After I try it I'll give it back and likely duplicate it if I can manage. It's also encouraging to try some single band vertical versions. The mountain topper seems to be a very good little rig. I just took delivery of a XEIGO G90. It can be adjusted from 1 watt to 20 watts they say.
@w4arb
@w4arb Жыл бұрын
I love the Mountain Topper for its simplicity. It has a great sounding receiver too. Very nice on the G90! I had one for a while and it was a solid rig. I sometimes regret selling it.

@@w4arb @w4arb I had a Knwd for years (still have it) and like it a lot. I got the G90 in case of emergency Stink Hits The Fan scenarios and to learn the digital modes but I'll use the G 90 on CW, too. I'm definitely drawn to those shirt pocket size rigs, but IF life gets serious I think the option to have 20 watts is worth the extra size and weight. You could get another one whenever the notion strikes. I might still go for a pocket QRP rig OR maybe try putting together a kit.
@w4arb
@w4arb Жыл бұрын
I can agree with that concept. The G90 is a good all purpose radio too for sideband and digital modes. My Yaesu FT-891 serves that purpose for me now and it’s a solid rig too. Though it doesn’t have a built in tuner like the G90 does, but does do 100 watts.

BTW, i'm coding a browser version of the n1mm that will store data in the browser's indexed DB. I did a proof of concept and it works beautifully. I can install the web app in the device and access it offline =]

I have to say when people start doing unboxing videos, I cut them out. Lol same for people that beg for money via patreon. Coffee funds are cool. But I know some people like exclusive box opening vids so I prefer your style.

I like strictly review-style videos when I’m researching a product, but the channels that I watch all their videos are more like K4SWL and Red Summit RF. I like operating and a good story and long form content. Better for listening while bush hogging the back property. :)
