Marcel, I've been watching you vid's and I like what you're doing. I'm going to be 80 Y/O this year and I've been into sound and sound recording since high school. A lot of what I hear and quite frankly upset with is inaccurate sound effects. A phone that rings with the wrong bells or sequence, a car that starts with the wrong starter sound or some other flub. I also have the same passion with bad editing on a movie. Keep up the good work.

Hi Marcel, in here you talk about Audio Technica mic for sound designers and for field recordings. I am mainly interested in field recording, i create a lot of sound effects out of them for my films. But i was thinking to use Zoom H8's own X-Y mics for that? Is it bad? So i need to buy a one more external mic for field recordings? So i can't use Zoom h8's own microphones for field recordings?

Fantastic video. I've been recording live musical concerts going on 25 years. I was watching, waiting to see if you already had the Sennheiser, and was pleased to see that you do. You already have more than enough nice equipment, but I highly recommend you look at the Shure MV88+ if you want a great little mic for your phone. You probably already know about it, but for years, it's been the best stereo mic made for nice quality phone recordings. I wish it had a little more range with the reverb, but overall, a great stereo mic for the price. I liked and subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your content in the future. Thanks for your time!

going to start recording airsoft videos but wanted a deeper depth of soundscape that an action cam can not compare to. it seems like a zoom F3 and a AT bp2045, with the jammer and gag but I'm excited to see how it turns out as have always wanted to record stereo. but looking forward to getting a pole and just recording ambience too. i got a flight flix that adapts drift ghost xl and pros to fit 37mm lens. so with a nd8/vpl and a uv protector. and that's forced the onboard chip to lengthen the shutter speed so there is a nice motion blur included now. if id buy another I might go with the urth vmd/pl if Polarpro doesn't release a 37mm mdvmd.

@FreeToUseSounds4 жыл бұрын
Hi Giancarlo! Thank you so much for your nice comment and yes, these Geofon's were gone in no time. I believe that Rycote puts more effort and research into wind protection and for Rode its just a side product next to the range of microphones they have. Alone with that in mind and the experience I had with the Rycote blimp I believe Rycote has the better wind protection products. You pay more but in that case you get more.

This is very good stuff. I live in Arizona and our summer monsoon storms are spectacular. Do you have any thoughts about gear for recording storms and/or technique. Specifically I'd be interested in what microphones might be able to handle the high sound pressure levels of a fairly close lightning strike. Even with a 32 bit recorder if you overdrive the microphone distortion will occur. Also in how you keep your microphones and gear dry without the sound of raindrops hitting something that is physically protecting the gear from rain. I've been watching a lot of your videos and they're very helpful but also really intriguing. What a great life you guys have carved out for yourselves.

Thank you for making this! I'm slowly building a field kit and was wondering what type of equipment you are using. Since you mentioned that you would be open to trying out equipment for future videos: Have you heard of Line Audio Design mics? They're handmade in Sweden and ridiculously affordable for what they are. There's the CM4 cardioid, which may be a wider cardioid rather than true cardioid. I've read they are comparable to Schoeps Mk21. They also have an omni (the OM1). I just ordered a pair of CM4s that I'm going to play with in the studio and out in the field, but it would be cool to see you put them to the test more rigorously and hear how they stack up compared to your current equipment. I've read they have a bit more self noise than more expensive mics (mics over 10x the price of the CM4), but for my modest budget, I'm excited to get them. They have a clean, neutral, balanced sound. Planning on recording ambiances in ORTF. I don't have any affiliation with them, just excited about them and would like to see/hear how they handle in professional applications. Thanks again!

Hi! Oh yes I heard and read about Line Audio within the field recording community and the sound recordist who have them love them. The CM4 sounding very nice. @MindwessWetad4 жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds Ah yes, the logistics of getting them to you would be difficult! I was looking into Rycote solutions for down the line, the stereo cyclone and/or ORTF windshield kit, but those are way out of my price range currently. Going to try out some Rycote baseballs + windjammers from a friend of mine, but I'm going to take a gamble on some Movo WS-G30 windscreens and compare them to the baseballs. Probably won't be able to record in any extreme winds anytime soon, but I'll be happy to be out recording something!

Hey, thank you very much for your awesome content! :) I have 1-2 question: For ASMR-like recordings (Video A7 m3) at the studio/home, recording different sounds on motorcyles and field recording aswell... Would the Zoom F4/F8 be a good choice? I like that they have dual SD and the capsule connection for the zoom mics. Or would the Zoom F6 put me in a better spot so I don‘t get distortions, especially on the motorcycle... I looked into the H6/H8 aswell but the plastic and the less professional appearance didn‘t convince me...(and I can pic up the F4/F8 for almost the same price) And the last question is: which Mic would you recommend for ASMR (not voice, but unboxing things) and which mic to record Sounds on a motorcycle... (inside a bagpack and under the seat) If you find the time and joy to answer, I would appreciate it very much :) Greetings from 🇩🇪 , keep up the awesome videos 🤗

Good Morning! I always have time to respond to comments :) That is what I signed up for being on KZbin. :) Question 01 about the recorder I had the F4 and still have the F8n but since I have the F6 I don't use the F8n at all anymore. It's only for backup. I replaced the F4 with the F8n back in 2018 If I really want to be safe with recording motorcycle sounds, I would always use a 32-bit recorder but that is because I have them already. I always think forward because technology moves forward but I use the recorder almost every day. If you do it just for fun and a couple of times a month or year then I would probably go with a cheaper recorder and safe the money. The other question I have for you would be about the number of microphones you like to use? Having 8 inputs is a lot but the F8 or F8n is a good choice for sure. I miss the capsule input on the F6 but there is almost no room for it. For recording motorbikes under the seat I would use the DPA 4060 or 4060 heavy duty. These are expensive but really good if it comes to recording such sounds. I know there are so many omnis out there people love using. Not sure if you know the website www.gearslutz.com. You can spend hours reading about microphones. It's a community-based website and if you have more questions about very specific microphones, this is the place to go. Question 02 For ASMR binaural microphones are always great because you have them in your ear and you can focus on opening the packages. I made a video about the Soundman OKM but what's so cool about the DPA 4060, you can create a DIY headset and use it as well. The cheaper versions are using LOM Usi Micro and you can build your own dummy head. I hope I could help you and if not just ask. I'm here :) Marcel

@@FreeToUseSounds Good morning, Thank you so much for your detailed answer! Yes, you are right the F6 (32bit) is the future... And if I get nice microphones the capsules should not be needed. Awesome tip with the binaural microphone setup... I was first thinking of a boom/shotgun Microphone. :D The DPA 4060 look good I will definitely take them into consideration. Your video about the Soundman OKM was great as well! 1 more question... if the microphone can be a bit bigger... in a backpack or attached to one... would you still take the DPA4060 or is there another slightly bigger microphone that comes to mind? Thanks again for your time. David

@@WILDWILDVAPE A boom or shotgun microphone is mostly mono and that doesn't work for ASMR effect, except you use two and mix it to stereo of course. A slightly bigger omni I use is the LOM Usi Pro but they are always sold out. You have to be lucky to get one but they are awesome. Another way to record motorbike sounds is by using a contact microphone. If you attach it to a frame, you get some awesome sounds.

@@WILDWILDVAPE Oh yes the Lom's are really hard to get but be aware that the 4061 have a much higher noise floor. There are some posts about difference between 4060 and 4061. Not that you are dissapointed with the quality later. Make sure you read them.

I halready have several xlr cables but I wanna buy two news identical very good cables for this setup and I want your suggestion. Thanks

Hi Giancarlo, I have 6 foot cables but if I extend the Nanopole to the fullest I'm reach the max and its to short. I think 8 foot is the best. Not too long and not too short. Also not to heavy in the bag.

Hi guys! Love your work! Really inspirational!! I have a technical question. Is it fine to match the Wildtronic Stereo/Mono microphone without preamp directly in a Zoom H8? Can Zoom provide enough power for that? Sorry about these silly question, I love sounds since a while but I'm still a newbee!
@FreeToUseSounds3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm not sure if I understand your question. I guess you have the Wildtronics Parabolic Dish right? You want somehow connect the XLR cables but not using the Zoom? Also by not using the Zoom preamps what do you mean about power source? I think now I have more questions :)
@PhysioYogaProject3 жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds ok I try to make it clearer. I'm wandering to buy a wildtronic stereo/mono, and I would like to use it directly with the zoom h8. Because they have two version of it, the amplified version and the straight xlr version, i was asking if I take the first one and I connect it directly to the zoom h8, can it work well? Thanks again for your work and for your answer, i've seen a lot of hours of your videos! XD
@FreeToUseSounds3 жыл бұрын
@@PhysioYogaProject Oh I see. Yes that makes more sense. I think what you wanted to know is that the H8 has phantom power and yes it can handle the Wildtronics. I do have to be honest and tell you that after one year, one of the channels on the parabolic dish I had, started already to fail and that is why I don't use it anymore. Keep in mind if you ever run into issues with this microphone you would need to ship it back to the United States. If you haven't decided yet and you are starting out with recording sounds, look into the Audio Technica 4025. Maybe you watched the video already? Its a stereo microphone that is cheaper, reliable and the supply chain is much better with an international company like Audio Technica. This is the microphone I wish knewing about it when I started out. Using a Rycote blimp or Rycote BBG you are cheaper or almost at the same price for this parabolic dish. Keep in mind the parabolic dish doesn't come with good wind protection at all. I had to customize one in Singapore that was alright but in places like Iceland, I wouldn't stand a chance to record any sounds with it. If you have any other question just let me know.

@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks really a lot guys. I liked the capacity of the Wildtronic to isolate the sounds in the nature, but you're making me thinking about it. I guess i can make a cheap start with the zoom h8 and add the at 4025 after i made some practice with the only zoom. I think it makes sense. :-) Thanks again and if you would ever want to register in Tuscany (Italy), you'll have a guide!

@@PhysioYogaProject I never really used the mono microphone with the wildtronics dish. Great video and always a pleasure to see what you use for your stunning recordings. I wonder, how I should proceed gear wise to record nature ambience as well as single distant animal sounds (i.e. birds). I own the Zoom H5 with XY- and Shotgun (SGH6) capsule, but the noise floor is considerable with the gain above 7. Given that many wildlife sounds are faint and distant, I struggle a fair bit and am contemplating about external mics such as 2xcondenser mics or one dedicated shotgun mic. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you very much in advance! Tom
@FreeToUseSounds4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes I know what you mean and I had used the Zoom H6 with the XY only. That was back in 2017 and I do think that the LOM I got was already a great improvement on a budget. What condenser mics are the one you have in mind?

@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for your immediate reply! Highly appreciated! I am considering a matched pair of Se8 microphones, because they should be better than cheaper options such as the rode M5. However, your Sennheisers sound superb, but are out of the range :) How do you approach faint and distant sounds in nature? Cheers Tom
@FreeToUseSounds4 жыл бұрын
@@Expeditom Wow! The SPL of them is amazing and also the self noise is not bad at all. Looks like a nice pair of microphones. If a sound is faint or in the distance I keep the levels always under the self noise. I never raise it to a level of unwanted sound. If the natural environment is quiet, thats how I record it because I know that I can't force sound into the recorder if there isn't any. Also lots of sound designers prefer quiet recordings because they are great for build ups.
