You have a very valid point that most of us can relate to, we are too scared to sharpen due to stuffing up the edge. When I was learning I practice on cheap knives before moving up to my good knives. I really like your videos, they are giving me the will to want to go out and hike/camp and get back in touch with nature. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

Great stuff Joe! My Grandfather taught me how to sharpen a knife, then he told me, "There's only two kinds of people who carry a dull knife. Someone who doesn't know how to sharpen a knife and those who are too lazy to sharpen a knife and now you know how to sharpen one...". So now I always keep my blades sharp. I use a Work Sharp field sharpener and it works great! Thanks for sharing.

I work in a cooking store where we offer a knife sharpening service. The angle of the edge on a knife varies on where the knife is made. I don't have an exact angle, but for the most part: asian blades will cary anywhere from a 9-16 degree angle. German and all other are typically 18-24. To make it simple, get a normal matchbook and place it on your steel or honing steel, whetstone, whatever you have around. The matchbook will provide a nice 14-16 degree angle, depending on the thickness of the matchbook. For other blades, add 'half' the thickness of the top of the matchbook and that will help you find the right angle. Joe is right. There is a very distinctive sound that any edge will make when honing or sharpening. Its not something i can describe, but it does take a lot of work with knives to be able to tell. Thanks for an awesome video Joe :)

Sharpening my knives has been a lifelong challenge. Thanks for the tips and the idea of a micro-bevel. I never had the visual acuity to 'see' the blade edge and I didn't have the even stroke to guide the blade (sigh!) These days, I sharpen at home rather than in the field. I use a lighted magnifier head set and a WorkSharp Ken Onion Edition band grinder. This is NOT a bladesmithing tool, just a handy home sharpener with graded and replaceable grit bands and with an adjustable angle guide.

I am so glad to posted this video, I too was afraid to booger up the edge. I have a GFB along with a couple Bark River knives, and they came so sharp and felt i could never return them to the original sharpness. After a long weekend in the field, and lots of work, they needed to be touched up or they would go beyond a working edge. I brought out my water stones and went to town. After a while i got a hang of it, and i was back in business. Thanks again, and may you and Scout be safe

Hey Joe, loved the new video on field sharpening cutting tools in situ. I own and have used a DC4 as well, however recently I discovered Fällkniven now produces a CC4 ceramic whetstone which has what appears to be the same dark sapphire impregnated fine grit stone layered with a ultra fine white ceramic side which Fällkniven reports to be as 0.1 micron and represents their finest honing stone (grit wise). This new combo stone, I find, is all I almost ever need to field sharpen my cutting tools wherever I find myself. It will produce a hair popping sharp cutting implement with almost no effort and yet remains just as small and compact for carry as its cousin the DC4 and in fact I carry both just on the off chance that I have some need for major repair of any cutting surface with the gold colored diamond side of the DC4. Just wanted to pass this info along as an item you may want to look into, You can find them online with a quick google search for Fällkniven CC4 and they are fairly inexpensive. I got mine for just under 25.00 with 2 day free shipping as an Amazon prime member. - ATB my friend and keep doing what you do Rick

on the fine stone I use I never use oil. when you get a super fine stone you take less material off so it doesn't tend to collect to much that would stop you from getting an edge.

I’ve been watching lots of sharpening videos and was under the impression you have to do each side until you get a burr a couple times. This is interesting, much quicker and appears to be equally effective.

Do you find a DC4 behaves like a "finer grit" stone when you don't clean the metal out? I ask because I always make sure I have a water source when using mine to constantly rinse it out, it works faster but I'm wondering if I could be getting a higher quality edge if I didn't rinse. And as always great vid. keep up th he good work man and thanks for sharing
