In this field strip video I show how to safely field strip and reassemble a Smith & Wesson 5.7 pistol. This is a mechanically interesting pistols as it uses the "Tempo Barrel System" which uses both a rotating barrel and gas delay operation. I hope this video helps someone in the future who may need information on how to do this or someone just interested in this pistol's operation.

Appreciate this. There are always a few guns where the strip is a bit finicky. This is one given the less than common setup. Your presentation was concise and well done. Got the 5.7 today and watching you was much better than reading the manual. Saved me aggravation, and saved my wife from hearing an endless stream of expletives. So, win-win.

I just performed my third breakdown and cleaning. I watch this video before every cleaning. I love this gun. It is one of my three-carry guns. My three edc guns are Sig P322 (only with stingers or Punch) CZ P07 and the S&W 5.7. Getting the optic regulated is usually the last step in the edc process. Thanks again for the helpful video.

Thumbs up for not calling it gas-operated👍. But unfortunately it is not gas-delayed either. This mechanism is basically a short-stroke recoil operated action as used in most handguns. But the 5.7mm cartridge has too little momentum for a recoil operated action because of its low impulse. Therefore, the additional momentum required is achieved by a muzzle booster. It is somewhat similar to a Nielsen device in a silencer and the exact opposite of a gas delay. The TEMPO system increases the speed of the slide, without increasing felt recoil. The expansion chamber around the gun "helps" the gun to cycle, although it is primarily still recoil operated. The firearm is therefore gas assisted, not operated nor delaied.

Goos to know on the New S&W Platform. A clean running (5.7mm) with a good trigger and truly different interior design engineering. Thin and light with decent capacity. Great for a carry bag or purse.

Is basically a desert eagle in 5.7 fn You have a gas piston "tempo mechanism" and a rotating loking system but combined with a polymer grip kinda glock. I had sometimes dreamed about it but didn't know exactly how to shrink the thing down to a concealable or normal size. But now Smith and Wesson already solved the question... Well done very impressed

I had no trouble taking the 5.7 down or putting it back together. I was stymied when I took the pistol down. I did not know what to do. My plan was to clean it. But it looked like it was packed in grease. Do you think I should remove as much of this as possible?

Has any of yalls S&W M&P 57s got the pretty wild gap above the picatinny rail or dust cover? Mines pretty extreme and I may fix it. My thread protector does not come off?, I have a brand new Smith & Wesson 5.7 and I never shot it before I’ve had the gun for about 30 days maybe 32 days? I disassembled it for the first time using break freeze seal pee to clean it thoroughly and I reassemble it without taking a thread protector off it looks like it’s molded onto the actual barrel itself?does anybody know how else I would get it off without damaging a barrel? If it’s supposed to be off because even the booklet shows it comes off, but mine does not come off.

@@thetexasgunvault Miami,FL AND NO, Never heated it up. However, I soaked all parks except the hand grip mechanism. In Break-Free CLP, did a good cleaning and wiped clean and reapplied a light coat and assembled. I was able to disassemble and assemble easily with that mechanism attached, I haven’t test, fired it since I disassembled it. However, I do have the blue tipped jacket and hollowpoint ammunition.

Wow what a PITA. I'm sure it shoots fine, but wow, takes forever to field strip compared to a PSA Rock--which takes down just as fast and easily as Glocks do. So many more components and moving parts in the M&P as well, and I can see how the carbon buildup would cause issues. I wouldn't want to have to keep that thing squeaky clean and lubed for it to run right like you have to do with 1911s.
