Field Study to Studio Finish: The Painting Process | Skip Whitcomb

Skip Whitcomb discusses his transition from working on location to finishing a piece in the studio.
1. Scouted subject with focus on water reflections and specific color palette.
2. Created thumbnail sketches and studies.
3. Used grid system for composition transfer.
4. Captured water reflections and added wildlife for texture.
5. Scraped and layered paint for desired effects.
The process may seem like a lot of work, but it is enjoyable and meaningful, especially if you want to improve your studio work!

What is a 3-4-5 triad?

I’m a little confused as well. On the colour wheel there are 12 different colours, right? From yellow, to yellow orange, to orange, to orange-red and so on. 3,4,5 must by colours next to each other on the wheel, but from which point? Why not 1,2,3?

12 colors.. going around the wheel, count 3, then 4 then 5. Example: yellow, blue green, red-violet…
