Brand new baby in this art of watercolor. I love your tutorials. Gives me hope that i can accomplish "something" . Also i find it so interesting that red is suppose to cancel out green ...yet the way you use it it actually enhances it wnd gives it more depth. I have painted reborn dolls for 3 years now and have played around with acrylics from time to time so i have at least a little color experience but i cant draw a straight line with a ruler (true story) so thought water color would be beyond me. Im finding that its more or less using light and dark values and just letting it do its thing. By watching you ...ive learned what isnt there is just as important as what is. Encouraging! Thank you
@katrinacrouch5 ай бұрын
Yes! Color theory is weird that way! Haha, Mixed together and red and green make a variety of grays and browns and muddy colors. But placed carefully next to each other and you get a magical dance of visual interest that pulls you around the page.

You are very clear with your tips and I like the sound of your voice. Please would you be so kind to tell me which brand of paper you used in this tutorial? Please would you tell me what is the best thing to do if you are pulling colour over a lighter colour but the darker one applied will not stay, but instead the lighter under colour keeps coming back up? For example clouds in pink then overlayed with a blue the next day. Thank you for sharing your talent and tips.
@katrinacrouch5 ай бұрын
You might be using too much water OR a resist has gotten into your paper. Double check the type of paint used (watercolor does not paint well over other types of paint) or maybe use an eraser over the area lightly to remove any oil buildup from your hand? That’s where I would start without seeing jt

Thanks for a great tutorial. I love water color paintings the most compared to other medium paintings but the few times I tried to do it myself as a complete beginner, I was a total failure and gave up. But watching your tutorial, I am encouraged to try again. What did you dab your brush on? Some towel or microfiber cloth at the side? Lifting the color to fade with the toilet paper was amazing. Will definitely watch your other tutorials soon, specially the salt spraying one. Do you use regular table salt?

Hi! I am new to watercoloring. You talk about using transparent yellow. I'm using White Nights Watercolor starting out. I feel that my yellow has "white" in it, does that sound right? I feel like it actually lightens the color and add yellow when I mix colors. Can you explain that, what should I actually be using?
@katrinacrouch Жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have more of an opaque yellow. I’m not familiar with the White Nights palette you’re talking about, but I will do some research here in a moment. The yellow that I use is very light but pigmented. I also have used Lemon Yellow by Windsor and Newton, which is a very similar color

Yes! Just mix the compliments in (blue with orange, green with red, yellow with purple) or a tiny touch of black to desaturate (“mute”) the colors. Practice a little on a scrap piece of paper and you’ll have a good palette to work with in no-time!

Im not sure if you've already answered this but my watercolor paper seems to dry wayy too quickly leading to harsh stroke lines. Do you have any tips for this? Different paper? Wetting the paper first?
@katrinacrouch3 ай бұрын
Different paper would help but you’ll learn how to work with what you have. Definitely wet the paper first if you want to avoid the lines. And if you’re still struggling, add more water to your brush to help keep everything damp. Dedicate a few pages to (“throw away”) trying different combos until you have it figured out the way you like ❤️

Many companies sell watercolor “grounds”, which theoretically help protect paper, though I haven’t tried it myself and heard of a bad experience that a friend had. But again, I haven’t tested it myself! You can use a piece of watercolor paper as a barrier between the page you’re painting and the page underneath. Start with a small test area to see how the paper responds and try to keep it as dry in your painting technique as possible.

I have to substitute and mix to create your color pallet. We’ll see what happens.

You can use a lemon yellow, Alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and a green missed with a little (very little) black paint ❤️

Ever try a knead-able eraser?

Yes! I use one almost daily 😊

I was supposed to retire a few weeks ago and so naturally I bought a bag of watercolor painting paraphernalia. Today, first day, I tried to work on your painting and when a finished .. I'm not so sure. I started with the sky and everything but at the moment it looks less of a landscape and more like Julius Cesar biting a NY taxi driver while an interested giraffe looks at the incident. The other thing is that my brush somehow lifts the paint off the paper revealing the white paper again. Sure I'm not ready this time around.

That is hilarious! Sounds like a winner for the modern art museum 😉 Fear not-all maiden voyages experience mishap, watercolor included! I encourage you to try again (this or another tutorial) and I’m confident that you will improve with each attempt

This tutorial is great, I like the way you explain what you're doing since most watercolor landscape tutorials are too complicated to follow along!

Oh wonderful! I’m so glad it was helpful-I agree that I’ve struggled to follow landscape tutorials in the past (which is maybe why I am not very proficient, hah)

where is your light source? I'm confused. Why are you continuing to use this watercolor paper if you had such difficulty with it before this?
@katrinacrouch29 күн бұрын
Light source was from the right of memory serves me well. As far as paper: The paper isn’t “unusable”, just not my favorite. One way that I can afford to make these free videos is to use up what I have instead of always buying more, even if it isn’t my favorite. I also don’t consider myself a landscape expert, so I would rather use non-favorites with a subject I have low expectations for. Hope that clears things up ☺️
