In this video I test the Yugoslavian Mess Kit in a number of different locations around Scotland. I also improvise a pot stand and pot hanger specifically for this mess kit.

Thank you so much for this review! I just ordered two of them, one for me and one for my son. He just turned 3 today and is interested in camping so this will be a useful part of that.

You can buy a grill the same size as yours and it has foldaway legs.I use that with my Yugoslav cook system.

A trench is the right way to do it. It's a common trick for several kinds of cook. You dig a trench that connects with the fire, scoop hot coals into the trench, and place the grill across the trench. You can scoop more hot coals in as needed, or you can slide small stick onto the coals under the fire, and allow them to turn to coals.

Love mine but replaced the cheap cover with a Swiss rubberized pouch and got rid of the heavy cutlery with a plastic spork. Thank you for inspiring me to buy one and yes if you drill two holes in the lid you can hang the bottom pot by wire over the fire.

Re: If you drill two holes in the lid (of the Yugosalvian Mess Kit) you can hang the bottom pot by wire over the fire. In the plastic lid? Can you expand on this mod where holes were drilled, type of wire you used, etc please?

Your marvellous titanium spork is too short, isn't it? I'd carry and use the original cutlery. It's all about that sweet comfort while eating with real (stainless steel, not aluminium!!!) spoon, fork and knife. It's a psychological booster for soldiers on the battlefield, though. By the way, you'll have backup for knife, can and bottle opener in case you lose your glorious Victorinox swiss pocketknife. :) Cheers.

There are other kits out there that are also good. But this one is probably my favourite. In the UK at the moment, they are pretty unbeatable in price. I saw one in good condition going for £7 the other day. All the best, Andrew.

I've seen people use the US one straight on the fire; is there a reason why this one has to be suspended ? Can't you just put it at the edge of the fire and cook like that ? Will the aluminium melt ?
@bushcraftnshizzle8087
@bushcraftnshizzle8087 9 жыл бұрын
+pk2hitman47 Good question. Sure you could just put the aluminium pot straight on the fire if you wanted to. You probably should do this if the pot is all you have with you. Whether located next to the fire or in the fire, the aluminium will not melt. The melting point of aluminium is 660 degrees centigrade, so to melt the pot, you would need to have a fire 6 and a half times hotter than one you could boil water on.So why suspend the pot above the fire?There are a few reasons:1) The hottest part of the fire is not in the fire but approximately an inch or two above the centre2) Airflow to the fire is improved, the pot itself is not stopping air getting to the fire3) Quite often it makes the pot easier to clean afterwards, whilst there is usually soot on the pot, you avoid all the resins, tars, etc that come out of the burning wood. They are the irritating things to remove :) Hope my long winded response helps. All the best, Andrew.

+BushcraftNShizzle Thanks, it did help :) I'm getting a Yugoslavian mess kit tomorrow and was worried that I'd have to carry more gear to suspend it :D Can't wait to play with the pot and cook stuff in it; I might pair it with a hexamine stove with wood as fuel :)

Totally agree! I have seen failures with the esbit tablets, particularly if they have been left in long term storage. The MOD ones always used to have a wax coating on the white box with the red text. I guess this would stop moisture getting inside and wrecking the quality of the hexy. Cheers, Andrew.
