The Botanist Patrick Blanc takes you to a Field Trip in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, hotspot of plant diversity. More than 120 species are featured along this film, from the mossy forests understories to the high altitude savannas. Papuan people, native plants and animals live in harmony in these still well preserved habitats.
Filmed & Produced by Pascal Héni

amazing amazing. best botany series. thank you for not adding silly background music. totally in love with those gigantic ferns !

Yes, we avoid to put music for nothing and we prefer the sounds of the forest, the cascades or the silence. Yes, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji or New Caledonia are incredible with the gigantic ferns, same as New Zealand. These Pacific islands are the kingdom of ferns, especially the big Marattiaceae and Cyatheaeceae.

Yes, you can read the name F. sublimbata in our film at 12.59 and same for F. dammaropsis at 40.02... Why these comments ? Do you love only Ficus ?

I've been restricting myself to looking at only the flora of the region where I live in Kansas USA and it's just astounding to see the plants in this video, taking forms I could never imagine them having. Thank you for making these videos

Any place in the world is rich in species and amazing adaptations but only if we can have access to somewhat preserved areas. So many interesting species are thriving in your Central American prairies...

Thanks so much. Yes, Pascal is doing a great job while filming and then working a long time in our home to finalize the films; For me, as a botanist, the job is easier and all the interviews are always one single shot !

Really incredible documentary! I am enjoying very much!! Also, I was wondering if Bescherellia elegantissima is a synonym of Spiridens reinwardtii? Which is the biggest moss in the world, and the only climbing species. Or are they different species? I dont know
@creaturefree
@creaturefree 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, according to the structure and position of the capsules under the stem, this is most probably a Spiridens... Thanks

can't find anything about the riedelia. Looks like a Ti plant
@creaturefree
@creaturefree 6 ай бұрын
Yes, Riedelia are very poorly known in spite of their high species diversity in the forests of New Guinea, especially at mid elevation, between 1000 and 2500 m asl. This is the most diversified genus in ginger family when considering the epiphytic species. And so beautiful, both for flowers and fruits. But difficult to grow in botanical gardens, probably because they need high humidity and quite low temperatures. Anyway, we love Riedelia and Axel D. Poulsen is now working on this genus.

Love the videos! BUT could you use bird songs for the audio tracks that are more native to the region, please? 😆 I find it very confusing when suddenly you seem to wander through European forests. Noticed that in some other videos, too (e.g. Tanzania). Otherwise thanks for these unique botanical video gems.

Yes, our films concern botany and more precisely life histories of plants. Happy that you love our work... Most of the sounds are recorded while filming and there are, of course, some additions. Please, tell us at which minutes you hear some discordances.

@creaturefree
@creaturefree 6 ай бұрын
Just as you know, the taxonomy of Marattiaceae, especially Ptisana and Angiopteris is very complex and some authors consider that there is only one species of Angiopteris, A. evecta while some others consider there are some 100 species !
