The Botanist Patrick Blanc takes you to a field trip around Mount Kinabalu, the summit of Borneo, in the dense mossy forests around 1500 m as well as in the lower mountain forests around 500 m above sea level. While harboring about 15 000 plant species, Borneo is one of the Biodiversity Hotspots.
We thank Michael Sundue for manys Fern names, Ian Turner for Chassalia chewii and Tim Utteridge for the Saurauia.
Filmed & produced by Pascal Héni

Thanks for your comment. Sure, we are not good to popularize our films since nor Pascal or myself are on the social medias. We can just hope that youtube will be a kind of long term library for the creations... We just come back from North Thailand, thus at the end of the rainy season and I have seen many strange plants including Chisocheton penduliflorus with inflorescence axis 7 m long ! Then back to Singapore for inauguration of my vertical gardens and other green creations at the airport terminal 2.

Not my intention to bring politics into this, but rather the philosophical question of why we are building malls, roads, gas stations, cars...etc. etc. Is this military industrial complex that we regard as our highest cultural accomplishment really the road forward? Or is it the road that has brought us to the brink of self destruction? THINK! Yes, monsieur Blanc, you are wearing shoes, clothes, colors that are produced by our technological world, not to speak about the camera and the internet that brings your work into our focus.... So you are putting the fruit of the destructive high technology to good use... the best kind of use and action and food for thought that I can think of! Pray, continue and, without you mentioning any of the philosophical questions of our destructive behavior on this planet, you are addressing it in a most meaningful way! Mercy beaucoup indeed!

I don’t understand how these videos don’t have 500x more views that they do. Amazing and so pleasurable to watch. I want to share them with so many people, perhaps I will in Reddit

Thanks so much; Actually we are not connected to any social media and this is probably why few people look at our videos. Hopefully, it seems that the persons who are finding them are happy.

this is INCREDIBLE. You guys should invest in some ads or something. It's a shame that people don't get to see these.

According to Kartonegoro (2022), the correct name for the widespread Medinilla speciosa would be now Medinilla eximia.

The Lauraceae at 1.02.10 is not a Litsea but an Actinodaphne, probably Actinodaphne glomerata.

This video helped me a lot with the deciphering of some endemic plants in the peninsular Malaysian rainforests. Thank you for the detail, the energy and the passion you put in your explanations. The images were also very neat and appreciable.

Thanks so much. I love Peninsular Malaysia and I have been in the forests very often, especially in the eighties while working for my PhD at Paris university. We still come back very often with Pascal but he did not yet release a film except some parts in our film on Cryptocoryne and also (in French) in the film about "my" Begonia blancii. Many photos of Peninsular Malaysia plants on my website, especially in the 6 chapters "Understory Plants" at "Inspiration".

Thanks for the information Patrick. I'll go and visit your website too. I have not had the chance to watch all your videos yet as I'm still in Malaysia but they are on my list.

Yes, I love Pothos barbarianus for the texture and color of its leaves. It is a quite common species in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo but most often difficult to detect because of its brown leaves often covered with mosses and algae.

Bonjour, no, the next films will concern the lowland forests of eastern Sabah. In fact, I climbed to the summit of Kinabalu in 1976 and 1984 while I was student in botany at the Paris university. Of course, the higher mountain forests are a paradise for plants, especially Rhododendrons, Elatostema, Nepenthes, orchids... But now, the ascent has become a highway for tourists !
