In the week the shooting organisations call for a five-year phase-out of lead shot + plastic wads + plastic cartridge cases, Charlie Jacoby goes behind the headlines to find out what shooters are thinking, what the evidence is, and how the organisations are reacting to the pummelling they are getting online. It's also the week that the government takes another step towards banning Brits from hunting overseas, so a good week for Paul Childerley to head to Portugal in the second part of his montería driven hunt. GARGLER42 I thought it was quite intelligent and even slightly witty! My point (incase you missed it) is lead is a known poisonous substance which is being progressively removed from most things it is in (fuel, paint, solder, etc) . PVA is safe for kids to play with. Also, growing up is overrated.

Before I go off on a rant, I would just like to say: Charlie and everyone in the team at Fieldsports Channel: thanks for all you do every day and for all the shows you give us week in week out. If it wasn't for you guys, I am not sure that I would feel that anyone at all truly has the backs of those that take part in country pursuits. On to lead's dead, Baby: I had to laugh at Duncan's comment saying ranting on social media isn't helpful (3m16s). What do these guys expect? If you don't consult with your members and spring a big fat surprise which is as welcome as a lurker in the water pipe, does he really anticipate praise? I questioned a tame mouth piece for the organisations on Twitter the other day and asked what the feedback was regarding how the organisations had gamed this decision and the consequences from it. Having been particularly fulsome in his praise and quick with his responses bigging up this announcement up to that point, I was surprised that there was no response at all to this query. My view, for what it is worth (and clearly as far as BASC and CA are concerned it is worthless) is we were always going to lose lead. Will this change the sport for many people? Yes. Will those that wish to shut us down now go for an immediate ban? Of course, why not, they can say "Look, even these murdering bastards say lead is bad and they have a viable alternative, ban it now! No need to wait." DEFRA, ever supine and with Goldsmith in Boris' ear will agree and we will potentially have a ban prior to the new season. I wonder where that risk featured on the risk matrix when they came to this decision? One last thing, BASC (Duncan) says there wasn't any consultation and sorry but you voted for us. Does anyone have a copy of the literature stating "If elected I shall push for a ban on all lead shot for game shooting!" Also Tim Bonner of CA stated there's been more than enough consultation now stop complaining and get on with it. They can't even get that bit of communication straight.

Thanks Colin. I think the organisations were after positive headlines - which they got. And the shooting world has been criticising them for not creating those headlines in recent months. Plus they could probably only achieve those headlines with an ambush like this. But they may have under-estimated the modern strength of feeling about 'being included' in major decisions. / Charlie

The guy who was arrested while shooting Canada geese legally with his shotgun licence with him, and his permission slip with him, contacted BASC, who told him they couldn’t help with the wrongful arrest. What was he paying for? Remember when your insurance is due how they sold you down the river.

I'm from the States and we have this thing called the NRA so I have no idea what basc is but the NRA here in the states does not regulatewhat shot size and or type of shot to be used for hunting they just are there to backup your rights to buy a firearm the states and federal government makeup laws that delegate shot and rifle ammunition to be used in certain areas the state of California has gone absolutely lead free even in certain rifle ammunition it has to be all copper or steel ammo no lead in the state of California

I think it is absolutely essential that people voice their opinions on this withdrawal of lead. Just as it is essential that with every enquiry relating to shooting, every shooting person contributes evidence and opinion. Just as it is essential that every time a broadcaster broadcasts inaccuracies about shooting, as fact, every shooter writes to them and complains about it. Just as it is essential that all shooters use the information provided by shooting organisations (and Fieldsports Britain!) to defend shooting to educate people about the benefits that shooting provides for wildlife, against a background of the ‘out of sight -out of mind,’ / cheap food culture we have , and the impact that it has on wildlife.

All the anti lead 'evidence' seems to come from North America, where vast numbers of fowl migrate down well delineated 'flyways' and there is huge shooting pressure within those boundaries. This does not happen in Britain! The West London Shooting School has been showered with lead shot for 119 years, but is not a wildlife desert to my knowledge!

Am I the only one who thinks that the principle of moving away from lead and plastic is a good thing?!? Surely we all acknowledge we can’t keep throwing lead and plastic around the countryside for ever? What is the main problem? Price? Steel is a cheaper material than lead. More lead ammo is currently made therefore, economy of manufacturing scale, it’s currently cheaper. This will switch. Also, this is for game shooting. You are paying £35 per pheasant, ammo is hardly the expensive part of our hobby is it!! Shot performance: ok, lead is better, this is true, however, would it kills us to shoot things a little closer in.....also, 5 years is a long time and us Brits are pretty good at engineering, I’m excited to see what we come up with in 5 years of development. Gun Damage? Honestly, how many of us really have non steel proof guns which we shoot at game. We can’t all be shooting old English side by sides all the time...! If you own a Purdy which you shoot at pheasants, I’m pretty sure you can afford bismuth.. Also, it’s voluntary, if after 5 years you personally want to keep shooting lead then no one will be stopping you! Maybe 70% of us switch, this is great progress. I think we need to remember that these organisations are about conservation and countryside management as much as shooting. If it’s bad for the environment, it’s bad for shooting. Lastly, the end product is food. If we want game on the shelves in Sainsbury’s, perhaps not to filling it with a poisonous substance is a good idea??? Phew, that feels better, sorry, not sure what came over me. Right, carry on.

Clay and soil deposits are full of lead, last time i looked the rivers and ponds were full of it, I may be wrong but was clay not made by silt deposits left of rivers, I watched a TV program and even gold was laying about in lumps. I also heard clay is quite good for keeping the water in ponds, but I'm probably wrong again.....BASC FACT...Lead only occurs in sporting consumables.... Well Done people for paying their wages. I'm currently waiting to hear back from the NHS regarding the safety, or lack thereof, of steel shot for those who eat game & who need an MRI scan. From what I've seen so far, such a scan could be dangerous, or even lethal for someone with steel shot in their digestive tract.

Cheers Charlie and team for another informative programme, The only thing I would like to add to the debate is with lead in petrol "there was no debate" . Government stepped in and made a decision. .. and I much remember people with their beloved old classic cars saying much the same as a lot of folk with old guns ..the truth is we may not much like the modern times we live but we do have to just consider our selves but to the future of our sport and our world to future generations... if no wants to buy game meat killed with lead shot then we must do something about it , if that means changing ammunition then so be it. .because without a market for game meat there would be no reason to go out and shoot it .. I for one believe there could have been better clarity from organisations but my worry would be that it may have caused more of a melt down with a lot more in fighting ... Just my opinion for what its worth. .

This single BASC & Co car crash alone has done more damage to the shooting industry and country sports than all the antis and Chris Packam put together. This self inflicted crap along with the attacks on Burning Heather, Mountain Hares, Licencing of Grouse moors, Fox Hunting, Rapror Groups, General Licencing, Game bird release, Trophy bans, Deer Culls in Scotland, the list goes on, all are working together to end shooting and country sports. If you cannot see whats coming from this disaster then this is worse than even i thought.... BASC have handed Chris Packham and Co all the ammunition they need to kill this way of life and we gave them the gallows in which to hang us. Chris Packham must have pished himself when he saw what BASC done.

@@paddymularkey I certainly agree that the past 18 months have been bloody awful. Personally, I think the biggest issue we face at the moment is Wild Justice; they are organised and stand shoulder to shoulder against 'all' forms of shooting. 90% of what they say is crap, but it wins hearts and minds. There is one saving grace here George and I was reminded of this by a reasonable prominent figure. We (shooters) are a tiny minority and 99% of the country has no idea that our community even exists. So whilst we obsess about these things, they arent on the radar for the rest of the country. We need to remain united, be seen to be reasonable and if we can do this, then our sport will survive. There is a lot of money in the shooting industry (with wealthy connections). So... as long as 99% of the country don't give a shit about shooting, then the government wont want to create unnecessary problems. Remember, Packhan is no friend of the establishment, he is causing loads of aggro for the environmental departments... most would be quite happy if he just disappeared. We need to be responsible and factual and if we are, then I think we will be here to stay. We are nothing like 'fox hunting with hounds'... which I do not support. We are seperate.👍

Here in Canada we're obligated by law to hunt waterfowl with "non-toxic" shot. I've never thought it was a big deal since I learned to hunt with steel shot anyways. In the provinces I've hunted (Alberta and BC) we're technically allowed to hunt upland birds and small game with lead shot, but frankly I wouldn't want to eat anything that's been pumped full of lead anyways. We can blast clays on public land with lead shot, and because of that I think it's a fantastic idea to enforce the use of biodegradable hulls and wads since almost any isolated corner of this gorgeous country is littered with the remnants of someone else's fun afternoon of target practice! It's unfortunate that I often find myself cleaning someone else's rubbish just so I can leave my shooting spots a little bit cleaner than they were before I showed up since I want those place to remain available for my friends and I to go outside and make loud noises.

Malta does not have wetlands but the no lead policy is going to effect us due to we are surrounded with sea which is considered to fall as the wetlands policy. Our shores are made from solid rock which steel shots bounce dangerously when it hits the hard rock. Not to mention that nearly everyone have to change their guns so they can shot steel shots. BTW the new cartage tech. when it is diluted in water after few hours, the water is it safe to drink? or Just it is full of diluted plastic or with what it is made.

I suppose all the people who cant afford the new shell prices can go and take a jump, I know a fair few who can only just afford shooting at the moment never mind a new proofed gun and 1-2 quid a shell. What about the gun shops who have all their cash tied up in non steel proofed guns, They can suck it up too i suppose, i wonder how many will close before 2025. Disaster is the only way to describe this. Currently theres tons of issues kicking our doors down trying to end country sports and we have Idiots don our own side doing this crap.

@Peter Johnson Hi mate. I shoot sec 1 & 2 and don't relish losing such a balistically great material, but fact is, I know that it's nasty stuff, so I accept that we need to try and move away from it; just like we will end up moving from diesel. It's going to happen and we all need to deal with it. We have bigger problems with public perception than with changing our shot material at least nobody can criticise us for this decision.

Ranting on social media is working for those against us, mainly due to the high number of videos of animals and birds shot, as a hunter for life I am not sure why there is a need to show the gruesome aspects of shooting.

I don’t see this a shooting organisations retreating. I see it as us taking the lead ( no pun intended ) and prompting government legislation which would no doubt be less well thought out.
