How does Sako's new Powerhead Blade bullet work on deer? The non-toxic load is a winner on the range and in ballistic gel. Roy Lupton takes it out in the fallow rut in the South of England to try it out on a fallow buck. Find out how he gets on.

This sako blade 30.06 load is incredibly accurate. Minute of angle or less easy with three different models in this caliber. Haven't harvested anything with it yet, but I'm sure it will excel. Especially on something 170 lb or larger.

How many meters was the deer from spot of impact away? In other words how long was the fleeing distance?

Using a 30.06 on a small Fallow is gross overkill.

And if you look at that footage, you can see EXACTLY why I don’t like walking behind someone carrying their rifle shouldered muzzle up, with a heavy mod on the barrel . . . the muzzle often ends up pointing at my face! Muzzle DOWN people: I’d rather get shot in the foot if they fuck up!

30-06 not dropping a tiny fallow into its own shadow, non toxic ammo is the pits.

I've turned heart and lungs into goulasch with a .300WM on roe deers that didn't drop on the spot. I've also dropped 300lb+ wild boar on the spot with the same cartridge and bullet, with less than perfect shots. You can't always expect the same result when dealing with living creatures. Well, you can expect them to die from heart/lung shots, but not always instantly. Dont be so quick to mock lead-free ammo.

@@MasterFatness I’m talking simple scientific fact here. If you can’t put roe deer into their own shadow with a .300 WM then I’d get back down the range mate.
@MasterFatness
@MasterFatness Жыл бұрын
@@buckrussel3808 So you elected to ignore the point where I said that roe deer can and will run after absorbing 300WM into the vitals? They can also drop on the spot with gutshots. I've done both. So there's some scientific fact for you. But considering your comment, I suspect you're more interested in you being "right" than actual scientific facts.

@@MasterFatness look mate, I’m not trying to to cause an argument, I’m simply saying that in my experience of stalking and having taken all 6 uk species, I’ve never had a roe deer run from a shot to the vitals whilst using lead ammo, I’ve shot them with .222 north of the border with 50 grain soft points, I’ve shot them with 6.5x55 with 139 grain sst’s and not one has moved an inch in any direction but down. To be completely honest I’ve only ever had 2 deer run at all, one red with surface bullet blow out, and one cwd with a bad shot on my part. If .300 win mag isn’t working then I’d get to the range or get some better ammo. Stag safe out there, happy hunting. Non toxic ammo does not work as well as lead, it’s also far less safe.

@@buckrussel3808 Well, I ain't looking for an argument either. But I suppose the difference is, that most of the game I've shot through the vitals that ran afterwards were already running. During driven hunts, you could say the game is often too pre-occupied to notice that their heart and lungs are shot out. But I've seen it happen on stationary game as well. If the bullet hits behind the scapula and zips between a pair of ribs, it will often make a fine little hole through the vitals and a small exit hole as well, due to the lack of expansion. To be fair, this will rarely happen with a 300WM just because the permanent cavity caused by the velocity is often very large. But I've seen it happen as a kid when my father shot roe deer, and I've had it happen myself as an adult. Granted, it all depends on caliber, bullet, distance and shot placement. But trust me when I say that it can and will happen.

Animals hunt, it's the natural order. Removing apex predators was the issue. Then you have to manage large herbivores- otherwise, they, like humans, ruin the local environment for other species, further reducing biodiversity. Come back when you've educated yourself. PS Don't even suggest birth control for stags at $20k per beast, per year.
