Paul Childerley loves a .410 shotgun. Whether it is on a game day or clay shoot, he enjoys the challenge of the smaller calibre, plus the benefits of less recoil, less weight, and less bang. Today, he's trying to have a day on the pigeons with a selection of guns and shells. The birds have other ideas and move to another field. Those that are heading our way are finding Paul's hide offensive to the eye, so he has to try and come up with a strategy that'll deliver the goods. Why shoot pigeons?
The woodpigeon is recognised as the UK’s number one agricultural pest and causes millions of pounds of damage (AHDB consultation 10-40% loss in yield. Equivalent loss of £125/ha for Oil Seed Rape, £250/ha for peas, £350-£1250/ha for brassicas) to agricultural crops every year including cereals, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and salad crops. Pigeon damage reduces the yield, quality, appearance and ultimately the saleability of the crop. Pigeons can also cause damage in gardens and allotments - pecking at the leaves and ripping off portions, often leaving just the stalks and larger leaf veins. They may also attack and strip buds, leaves and fruits off trees and bushes.
The UK woodpigeon population was last estimated at 5.4 million pairs in 2009. Densities of wood pigeon are the highest in Eastern England, coinciding with the highest concentration of horticultural production.
Wild pigeon (game) is natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It’s low in cholesterol and high in protein… and, quite simply, delicious. ‘m’

Interesting video, enjoyed watching it. Using 7 shot increases the performance of a 410 . Pattern,pattern,and pattern fills the bag. I used nothing but a 410 for around 12 years.

Greetings to you. In Russia, steel cartridges for 410 caliber are often used, it is very convenient and there are many accessories for equipping 410 caliber cartridges.

I had the single barrel hush power but then went for the moss berg 410 pump action with hush power silencer and they are really great fun guns for pigeon and bolting rabbits but some shells do get stuck in the chamber so needing rods to push them out.

The 410 has its limitations, small load and long shot column. Best shoot within limitations. Keep ranges below 30 yards. Small shot, 7s or smaller give adequate penetration at these ranges and makes the most of pellet density,. Open chokes seem to work best, avoiding the dense middle region of tighter chokes.

i don’t think steel will be any different out of a .410 to a 12 bore tungsten is an option as is bismuth but why are we letting a lead ban happen in the first place

I don't get the benefit of the 410 over a 12 for pigeons, Is it just how loud the sound is? I'd rather have the more killing power

@@SniperFortySeven So from that I get that's it's literally just a challenge to yourself if you can happily shoulder a 12g. By more killing power I meant more pellets within the cartridge to hit with. Need to try one to fully understand.

@@SniperFortySeven New this year to pigeon shooting so just asking a lot of questions. From a humane stand point wouldn't it make more sense to use a 12g as more shot to hit with rather than partially miss and mame the bird. I have a very accurate shot but that's my thought logic

Thing is your more likely to wound a pigeon with a 12 b than a .410 . The 12 b has more range for sure but that means there is a tenancy to try for longer shots .the pattern opens the bird is hit with a couple of pellets and flys on the .410 the patten is tight the ranges are much reduced so the pattern tighter again . So you either hit the bird with plenty of pellets and it dies .or you miss completely .this is what I and many others have found when shooting over many years and why we end up shooting more often with our .410s over the larger cals . I ve shot my 12 b once this years . The .410s , I have 2 , maybe 60 times so far . Clays and decoys

@@ChemicalShots the satisfaction from taking a pigeon on the wing with 14 grms of no 7 as it screams past you at 20 yds is amazing. The feather puff and tumbling bird of a full pattern hit is to behold .especially when it's almost silent with no recoil .

In Russia, a 410 caliber cartridge costs 40-55 cents. I don't buy them in the store myself, I assemble them, I have a lot of components, and it costs 10-30 cents.Привет из РОССИИ!!!)))
