Vinnie Jones says it’s time to stand up for fieldsports. He was at the 2023 Game Fair at Ragley Hall, where the hunting and shooting organisations launched initiative after initiative against the antis. Deborah Hadfield rounds them up. Plus Charlie replaces DEFRA secretary Thérèse Coffey with a cauliflower, because she had the cauli-wobbles about turning up at the Game Fair Theatre and facing an angry crowd. Robbie Shedden talks up the new Vorn hip pack, we are giving away a steel fox target from Tom’s Targets priced at £145, David is on the news stump, and James Marchington has the best hunting videos on KZbin in Hunting KZbin. It’s a #FieldsportsBritain Game Fair special.

They did allegedly, years ago, yet gamekeepers told hunts they couldn’t go here or here or here because of birds and jacked it more than the ban ever did. Now they face what hunting had to deal with for years and shooting is a far easier target due to the firearm legislation it’s a very short lifespan for shooting without hunting taking the wrap shooters you’ve reaped what you’ve sown

If you want to resolve an issue with a water company you buy shares in the company and take the management to task at the AGM. If that doesn’t work you buy more shares and vote the management out and make it clear that shooting licenses be reinstated and if management want to be elected they need to make that happen.

United Utilities do as much harm as they do good... reaping massive profits selling Cumbrian water while supplying toxic sub-standard drinking water to the people of Cumbria - especially West Cumbria ..with their mixed borehole water which make people ill & they cant wash ,drink ,shower or wash their clothes normally without many problems.

Just a small observation. Vinnie Jones and the rest of the team were quite correct in saying that it is up to country folk to educate the rest of us. There is obviously a great deal of effort to do this but, all of the good articles and information is published in interest magazines. To reach those who aren't a member of the country fraternity it would be better to release articles in more general publications, such as those on airlines, women's mags and the like. It is my opinion that there are a vociferous group who oppose countryside management and their actions sell news stories. Most people are ambivalent, mainly because they don't know why things are the way they are. They are the target group for informative articles. Publishing in general forms of media would allow them to stumble across information. Who knows they might even read it.

Totally agree with you mr Doherty, the only way of doing it I think is leave the harriers etc alone and make the money people take smaller bags for the same money. I'm 100% in favour of countryside management and shooting to both provide food, sport and keep the balance right. I totally can't stand beautiful birds of prey being killed for the mega rich to have their so called sport. I know the moors need managing just like anywhere else but not in that way. People will tar all shooters with the same brush, that's my point.
@fieldsportstv
@fieldsportstv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. The trouble with the hen harrier persecution story is that it is an RSPB narrative. It is not true. It used to be true. The RSPB's own figures show that, while there were lots of convictions 20 years ago, they are now in the ones and twos per year. The main reason could be that, if you are caught, you lose your gun certificate. That's a huge risk.The RSPB makes claims about raptor disappearances but also points out that 75% of them die naturally in their first year. And then there's the success of the hen harrier brood management scheme - record numbers of hen harriers fledging on grousemoors. The RSPB refuses to take part. Do you accept this? / Charlie
@johnd8538
@johnd8538 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply and enlightening me on a subject I will admit I don't know all the ins and outs of. I'm a keen walker and wildcamper from Sheffield with the moors on my doorstep so this subject does interest me. When you say the prosecutions are massively down for persucution is that because the RSPB are not as efficient as they were 20 years ago or the actual offences are less? Somebody told me the other day they reported a hawk owner that had been mistreating the bird and the RSPB basically did f@#k all. To be honest I just love seeing the raptors out on my walks/camps. I also love the grouse and know they need careful management....nothing finer on a foggy day on the moors, nearly treading on one and it taking off from under your feet with that loud eerie call, it makes your blood run cold for a bit but in a good way!

So come on then Charlie what are your views on raptor persecution?? You know it takes place, on pheasant and partridge shoots not just grouse moors and I don't just mean Harriers im referring to Buzzards and Kites also. Disclosure: I am American. Have at me as you will. To my eyes, what this boils down to, is quite simple. The UK is a densely population, highly urbanized place. The wide open space, which people like me take for granted, simply doesn't exist - at least to any extent that I would appreciate. For reference, my home state is larger than the whole of England and Wales combined. Population: 1,961,504 as of the most recent census. That scarcity of population and abundance of space combine to produce several effects. First, there is quite simply enough room to shoot firearms without posing danger or irritation to one's neighbors. Second, there is plenty of space for animals, both predator and prey. Third, isolation breeds a fierce sense of independence. When the nearest grocer is thirty miles away, it is a comfort to know protein is readily available in the form of deer, elk, pheasant, duck, and wild turkey. I grew up shooting. I gained a familiarity with firearms from a young age. To my mind, they are simply tools. Like any tool, they can be used properly and responsibly, or recklessly and dangerously. The key is respect, education, and proper instruction. As for game preservation or predator management, I can't speak to the challenges of rural Britain with any degree of expertise. My guess is that true apex predators like wolves and bears have been been extirpated almost completely. That leaves animals like badgers, foxes, and perhaps lynx. Speaking only for myself, I can't see any reason why a farmer or anyone else ought not be permitted to protect his livestock, pets, and children from such peril. The risk which shotgun poses to society at large is more than offset by the benefit to the farmer/rural dweller. Cheers from an American cousin.

I think many people DID realise it was the tip of the wedge and recall there being a big demo in London at the time. Sadly the spineless David Cameron rolled over regardless. It's fair to say that today all traditional rural pursuits are under attack and the people doing the attacking seem to base their views on emotions rather than facts, as per climate crazies. I recently rejoined the BASC but simply for the insurance. I may be wrong but they seem quick to capitulate on many issues, obviously the lead ammo issue, and now they seem to be accepting that shotguns will be elevated to firearm status. I have never met anyone that died of ingesting lead shot and sporting estates like Sandringham do not appear to be turning barren and strewn with sick wildlife. Likewise, criminals do not apply for a gun license. BASC should be defending our sport far more vigorously rather than what comes across as plea bargaining.

Sorry you think shooters didn't support hunting in the face of a ban. I marched to oppose it and many other shooters did too. It's not just that, though. We all have to keep our own houses in order, too, lest the uninformed and the ill-intentioned conclude that the lawbreakers caught on camera represent the norm rather than the exception.

I would suggest to you that 99.9% of ‘gun wielders’ do more for the conservation of both flora and fauna than anti shooters realise is actually going on. Cruelty and destruction, as you put it, is against any shooting code of practice and is likely to result in the loss of a firearms licence hence anyone so idiotic is unlikely to have a licence in the first place.

When shooting has to take the same pressure that hunting has had to deal with for many many years already it will fold within an incredibly short space of time. Firearms laws alone make it impossible to run a shoot when sabs arrive on the scene. Hunting was the head of the spear, yet gamekeepers told them you can’t come as we have a shoot in three weeks time, gamekeepers short sight will cost them the industry. Long before the hunting ban shooting was huntings enemy not its Allie. Hunting people and shooting people are not the same breed. We use animals to see sport, if deaf occurs it’s a bye product, shooting is purely for killing by men that don’t have the skill or feel required to train a dog to hunt or ride a horse to follow it
