I finally found my boat. After 3 bad apples I came across this 2006 Bayliner 175 a few months ago with just 1.5 original hours on it. I did a very quick video of when I first bought it.
So after having tons of fun on the Lake this summer I finally got the chance to do a thorough review of it.

I have the '08 Bayliner 175...awesome all-purpose boat, use mine primarily for fishing. It's nearly identical to the 06. I purchased the boat in early 2022, was in great condition and generally well-maintained. I've since swapped out the alternator, V-belt, rotor cap, thermostat, water pump impeller, and replaced the starter motor this past season (my '08 engine had a lot more hours on it compared to your '06). Purrs like a kitten. Top speed is about 45-50mph. The Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha engines are relatively easy to work on...parts are widely available. These boats are a great buy if you can find one that's been properly maintained and kept in decent shape.

Similar situation, I have a 1989 sun runner 18 ft cuddy with 13 hours on it. It was used 2 seaons, then stored in carport for 27 years ... Bringing it back to life now. Pulled and cleaned fuel tank, new battery, replaced ignition cicuit wiring (rats), replaced shifter cables (stiff) , cleaned it up good. Hope to get on lake soon ... not going to be fast ... Volvo Penta aq131d with 2.3 liter & 120 hp. VINYL Interior like new except CLOTH cushions in cuddy (rats). Enjoyed your video.

I have a 2012 Bayliner BR195, it's great. And you are correct, if a Bayliner is well cared for then it will look great and last. Keep it covered, keep it clean, waxed, polished etc.

I really liked the video. Finally, someone who doesn't think my boat brand sucks.😊 I recently purchased a 96-19.5 Capri. The previous owner overhauled everything, gages, upholstery, bilge pumps, wiring. He even bought a new motor. currently it has 67 hours on it. He got the new motor from Michigan Motorz. the reviews on the company's ownership and service were really bad but there were no bad reviews on the actual 3.0. I had it all checked out by a mechanic before I bought it and he seamed to think it was in good shape. You do your best to figure out the honesty of the seller but until you put it in the water( and I haven't yet ) you just don't know. Great vid. I'll be checking out more. Thanks.

Nice Video! Had a 2004 model 185 Bayliner in Sydney... Loved the boat. Only had it a couple of years before I had to sell it. Took another 10yrs before I finally got another new boat - locally made Aussie model half cabin and I love this one too! Still reminisce about the 185 Bayliner though - just something about the look and ease of use... Current boat has an OB 4 stroke - cannot hear it running at idle but still fairly noisy at WOT - great motor but not as torquey as the 3.0 Mercruiser.

I know I'm 5 years late on finding your video but I really enjoyed it. I recently got a 2005 175 just like this one but doesn't run very good. I have to pump the throttle 3 or 4 times then put it to full, crank on it for about 10 seconds or so before it will start, then I have to keep the rpms up or it will die. Will definitely not idle and runs rough, don't know if its the carb, timing or what and I already put new distributor cap plugs and wires. Anyway thanks for the video.

05 175. 2 weeks in from brand new I bought a couple of square yards of foil backed sound insulation from BQuiet, and did the entire engine compartment. Result.. a boat we've kept and loved for ten years. I couldn't have lived with the sound level as it as it was. No way.

did you get the Hliner or the Ultimate? Is 12 sq.ft enough for under the hood of bayliner 175 3.0?

Hliner. It was the 12.75 sq/yd sheet. Had enough to do the entire inside of the doghouse no issue. I even surrounded the cupholders. www.b-quiet.com/products/b-quiet-hliner For a small fee you can request a sample and see what you'll be working with. If feeling really ambitious, buy two sheets and do along the divider below the cover and seats, and up along the upper rear deck. Cheers.

We had a 1975 Sportmaster 15 footer which had a hard plastic cover in the rear to cover the Bimini top. We also had a 1977 Arrowglas with that same engine. It stumbled when accelerating from a stop from early on.

I really love bayliners compared to many other boats out there, i don't know what it is about them but they just work. My dad and I had recently got out our 88 capri back on the lake, the thing still works as well as it did back when we got it..

Hi! Im currently looking at a 1995 bayliner capri 1950. I've searched on the net for some information about for have'nt gotten that much out of it. So if was wandering if you could me if these older bayliner is good engine wise? Like engine etc, and if they are good at pulling ski and such ?

Most likely you have the 3.0L mercruiser unless it is an outboard which it should not be. The 3.0 was used in so many boats and search with that information. Awesome engine just noisy.

@@fiero880 I hapen to be looking at at 2006 just like this tomorrow ! - A couple questions: 1) have you found that the motor noise be effectively quieted with good sound-deadening material? (lining the cover and /or other panels-areas?) 2) where do i actually look to inspect condition of transom? 3) I tested a 2002 yeaterday, and the steering and throttle were both rather stiff/hard to move. Maybe saltwater corrosion getting in?.....How "free" should those both feel... or are they really firm for a reason? 4 yesterdays boat i tested had quite a motor vibration at 1500 rpm, but smoothed out below that and above it (side panels and console shaking, etc) - maybe a bent prop, ujoint or shaft? - or do thay all do that. Or should it be smooth without shake thru all RPMs?

Jets clogging are common with ethanol based fuels. Probably especially a problem with boats since they sit over winter. Run a fine copper wire through the accelerator pump circuit and voila. Probably best to go FI with modern fuels. They are specifically engineered for use in FI systems.

The roots of the 3.0 go back to the 1960s; it existed as the the General Motors Iron Duke in 2.5L (the standard engine in the Fiero and numerous other vehicles) versions, and as a Pontiac 3.0L in special applications. It is course and unrefined, but extremely reliable and durable.

I actually purchased my 2006 Bayliner 175 BR in 2005 new, and have not been disappointed. You are right in that the carb will get gummed up if you do not run it periodically. Once fixed, it runs smooth and has been very reliable. We are also in North Carolina, running usually in Lake Jordan. Thanks for your video!

I have a 2009 bayliner 175 that I bought new at Cabela's and except for some oxidation from the Texas sun it is still like brand new. It runs great and I love it. And BTW it has no engine compartment insulation.

Hey man nice boat I agree with you on the engine noise they are brutal, I owned a 2007 Maxum 1800mx with one and that had sound proofing and although better than the one in your video it was still really bad. That said I have a Bayliner 642 with one just now and it's miles better. I had a carb gunk up on me once while I had the Mxum after 7 years and that was leaving it over the winter for six months at a time. This winter I am installing a fuel shut of so I can drain the carb an hpefully that won't ever be an issue again, for the cost I can't for the life of me don't understand why they don't do this at the factory? Safe boating and enjoy yourself :-)

Good move I wonder if you can't run some Mercury oil and stable combination through your fuel supply line and carb before you shut it off for the year? Definitely need a shot off either way.

I’m looking at a used 2006 3.0 Chaparral 180 SSI. The old engine was swapped with a brand new Merc 3.0 TKS unit . I’ve been avoiding getting serious about the boat because of the 3.0. question for you. i have a 1997 175 with a mercruiser 3.0. and when we launch and start the boat it takes a few turns to start then when started i have to let it sit for like 10 mins b4 being able to drive. if i give it throttle b4 that time frame it dies on me. carb issue possibly?

I have a 1993 starcraft starcaster 1700 has taria gauges and they still work fine. Then my dads Four winns SL 262 has taria gauges and works fine.

The fuel is crap I'm sure the carburetors are fine. you should use fuel stabilizer every time you park it for more than a week.

I have an identical boat to yours that I use mostly on the Bristol channel in the UK. We are in Spain at the moment using it on the Med. I know, I know........................it's a tough life but someone has to live it. In short I love my Bayliner and wouldn't swap it for another make. I agree with your opinion about the structural integrity but, most bay liner boats are underpowered and a " better " boat would have fuel injected but besides your opinion on the engine I agree with everything else.

About the fuel gauge.. i thought mine broke. Once it passed 1/2 it dropped really fast! But then i got to the conclusion that the fuel tank is "V" shaped. So its not the gauge its just the shape of the tank haha p.s. bayliners are nice boats!

Love the Bayliner videos!! I just bought a 2015 175. It seems to clunk into gear which I understand is normal. If you shift really slowly is grinds first then clunks into gear. Has this been your experience? I admit I was probably shifting too slowly. My first boat and first time driving it......

Yes they clunk. Mostly because again on the 175's there really isn't much sound dampening material so you will hear every sound from the engine. Even though the engine has a built in millisecond ignition thing that cuts the spark to allow easier gear shifting. Just shift into gear with one swoop motion to avoid the grinding.

@@fiero880 I just bought a 96 Capri and it was grinding and stalling when shifting. I stood there and watched my mechanic adjust the grinding and stalling right out of it. He would spin something on the cable jacket and he kept doing that until it shifted proper.

My friend's father pasted away due to COVID-19, he is settling his estate and offered to sell me Dad's Bayliner. Your video is very informative and makes me feel more prepared for a possible first time boat purchase. Any tips on how to convince your better half a boat is a good purchase?

You only live once. Break down the annual expenses (insurance, maintenance, winterizing & storage) and factor in how often you'll use it. If you won't use it much, rent instead. A good used boat will depreciate in value slowly. If you get a good deal on a well maintained boat, you can resell it if it doesn't work out and recover most or all of your investment, or maybe make a profit!

I really dislike carbs, they are the cause of a lot of problems. EFI is the best thing ever no matter what engine or vehicle you have. I'm not completely against carbs tho cuz we have a few carb jetskis and my dirtbike is carb

nope,bayliners are near the bottom really.I have this same boat in a '99 model.these usually are an entry level boats.mine is my first and in great condition and i also love it.not a lot of money invested in it and our family enjoys it about every other weekend during the summer.

I bought a 2007 185 and the upholstery needed to be redone, I got everything out except the side panel that had the throttle! How do you detach the throttle handle to get it off????

The shifter / throttle control has a panel that pops off giving you access to the mounting screws. On the control assembly itself by the lanyard switch there is a small notch on the plastic. That notch should allow you to pop that cover off.

The 175 is a very light boat and is amazing with the 3.0. Remember that 3.0 is used on many larger and heavier boats as well. It takes nothing to get to plane.
