Sant Jordi and the dragon: this is Catalonia's most famous legend. Do you know it? It tells the story of the knight Sant Jordi (St. George), who saved the princess from being devoured by a dreaded dragon. Out of the blood of the beast, a rose was born, which Sant Jordi gave to his beloved. In honour of this story, Sant Jordi's Day is celebrated in Catalonia every April 23rd, when men give women a rose and women, in turn, a book, but why a book? This day is also World Book Day, as two great writers, Cervantes and Shakespeare, died on the 23rd of April.
Despite being a weekday, the streets of many Catalan cities are filled with people visiting various stalls of booksellers and florists in search of the perfect rose and the perfect book. We encourage you to take part in this celebration of culture and love!
