They're not a perennial powerhouse, they're too small to be one. But they've always got some great players and they seem to have a "big team" mentality. In 2018 once the draw opened up for them it wasn't a surprise they made the final. Almost their entire XI plus a couple off the bench were at big clubs and playing key roles. For example, they went into the semi-final as betting underdogs despite having a lot more big game experience than England, and a midfield including Modric and Rakitic. Up front Mandzukic, Perisic. A really well balanced team.

I remember a game Croatia vs. Germany like it was yesterday. I was 8. My parents had a guest house in Croatia where we had a lot of German tourists during the summer. At the time, my father worked in Germany, but during the summers, he was in Croatia. On the ground floor, we had a big living room with lot of space. On that night, there were like 15 Germans and 4 Croats, my mother, father, uncle and me watching the game. We celebrated like crazy, so proud while our German guests were sad and confused because they could not understand that such a small country demolished their national team. It gives me goosebumps everytime I think about that! :) Proud to be Croat!!!

Started to compete in 1996 at the Euro and achieved a 3rd place 1998 at the World Cup and a 2nd Place at the Worldcup 2018....and several 1/4 finals at European Championships. Not too bad for a country of 4,5 m people and a global diaspora of another 6-7 m Croats. And with Two of the world‘s best Football academies (Hajduk Split‘s Luka Kaliterna football academy and Dinamo Zagreb‘s Hitrec-Kacijan football academy). Both in the Top 10 Football academies worldwide

I wouldnt call Croats the underdogs. They were one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Some of their players competed in world cup before with Yugoslavia too, and others were playing for top european teams. Plus this generation was product of super strong Yugoslavian league that gave also club european and world champion in 1991 Red Star. Yugoslavian team was also strong in this competition and lacked just a tiny bit of luck to get in last 8, with Mijatovic hitting the bar from penalty kick against never stronger Dutch team. I really wish Yugoslavia broke apart just 5 years later so we could see that best generation of our football playing one more WC together in their prime. I think they were ready to turn the world football upside down. That and the game of our basketball team against original NBA dream team.. I would give a year of my life just to watch that game happen.

The man made a deadly duo with Suker upfront, they would of been unstoppable, Suker alone was giving teams a hard time never mind with the likes of Boksic 2018 France vs Croatia: Croatia dominating possession and toying around with French defence and midfield for 60-70 minutes with Ref gifting France a dive which resulted in a free kick (1st goal) never should of happened and a handball that wasn’t an intentional penalty. France won solely because of Mpabbe, which I strongly feel without France wouldn’t of made it past the final 16 without him, crucial part of a pretty much useless forward line without him. 1st time around was very impressive, but how we played against France in the finals 2 years ago was the most beautiful football you can watch regardless of the score and ref working against us. Please rewatch the game, you can see Croatia seriously dominating possession, passing, temp etc against one of the best teams in the world. The golden generation of Croatian teams are some of the best I’m the world.. of all time.. for a country of 4 million people PROUD TO BE CROAT. BOG I HRVATI ❤️🇭🇷

It shouldn't be strange to lose vs. hosts team France, which national team was dreaming to win their first WC. And remember their "difficult" group with South Africa and Saudi Arabia. Then first play-off vs. Paraguay with the latest so-suffered winning goal from Blan. And the most weirdest finals I've ever seen was a very week Brazil.... 3:0, who had already 4 wins of WC. Who was the president of FIFA to that time? And what happened to him? Also, 4 years later, remember how hosts - Korean team have beaten Portugal, Italy and Spain? Easy.... lol.
