I'm in 6b also, central KY . Our place faces due south. First year with figs in the ground. Pruned them back to roughly 18 inches, put a mineral tub over them and piled up hay around the base and on top pf tub. Drilled a few air holes on tub also. Am rooting the cutting as i got a couple dozen new fig trees to up pot this spring. Thanks for the vid.

Great work! Keep it up. Figs have a learning curve but once you get it, they are tons of fun to watch grow. Not to mention the fruit lol. Cheers!

Have you ever measured the temp under there compared to the outside air? It would be nice to know.

at night, its the same as ambient temps however it completely keeps all of the frost off of the branches and the woodchips prevent any wind chill from getting in. It warms up a bit more when the sun is out kind of like a greenhouse.

@@twiggshomestead6497 That would mean that if it reached 0F degrees at night, the fig would be exposed to an ambient 0F. It can survive that?

Mine has lived. I think variety really matters. I also think that it's not the cold that kills the tree but the actual frost so keeping the frost off the branches allows it to survive. I am also not an expert but read a few good books on the topic.@@bobg5362

@@twiggshomestead6497 I believe you! I just never heard of ANY variety surviving above ground die-off once the temps get into the single digits. I will have to experiment once I get some surplus trees in the ground.
