Tyler: (holding a gun to a shop owner's head) Give my your wallet.
Raymond: (scared, gives him his wallet)
Tyler: Raymond K. Hessel 1327 Southeast Banning, Apt. A. Small, cramped basement apartment, Raymond?
Raymond: H...Ho...How did you know?
Tyler: 'Cause they give basement apartments letters instead of numbers. Raymond, you are going to die.
Raymond: (whimpering and crying)
Tyler: (looking at a picture) Is that your mom and dad? Cause Mom and Dad are gonna have to call kindly Dr. so-and-so to pick up your dental records. Do you want to know why? 'Cause there's gonna be nothing left of your face.
Raymond: (continues crying)
Tyler: (continuing to look through his wallet) An expired community-college ID. What'd you study Raymond?
Raymond: (stuttering) S...S...S..tufff
Tyler: Stuff? Were the midterms hard?
Tyler: (hits him with his gun) I asked you what you study.
Raymond: Biology, mostly.
Tyler: Why?
Raymond: I -- I don't know.
Tyler: What did you want to be, Raymond K. Hessel?
Raymond: (continues whimpering)
Tyler: (cocks gun) The question, Raymond, is what did you want to be?
Raymond: Veterinarian! Veterinarian!
Tyler: Animals.
Raymond: Ya, animal st....stu...
Tyler: Ya, stuff, I got that. So that means you need to get more schooling.
Raymond: Too...too much school.
Tyler: Would you rather be dead?
Raymond: (whimpering) No, no...
Tyler: Would you rather die, here, on your knees, in the back of a convenience store?
Raymond: No, please... no.
Tyler: (puts away gun). I'm keeping your license. Gonna check in on you. I know where you live. If you're not on your way to becoming a veterinarian in six weeks, you will be dead. Now, get up, run on home.
Raymond: (gets up and starts running)
Tyler: Run Forrest! Run!
Jack: I feel ill.
Tyler: Imagine how he feels.
Jack: Oh, come on - this isn't funny. That wasn't funny! What was the point of that?
Tyler: Tomorrow will be the best day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted. Come on. (throws the gun to Jack)
Jack: (inspects the gun, notices there are no bullets in it)

Raymond K Hessel is quite an inspirational character. I think about his story often as I make my way through college at 37. I found out it would take 6 years to become a counselor. That's a lot of schooling. I will be 43 when I graduate. If I don't get my masters degree, then in 6 years, I will still be 43.

Yes. Seing the bad side of life makes you not take the good little things for granted. BUT, the other lesson we can get from this scene is the good old JUST DO IT. "That means you have to get more schooling" - too much schooling "Would you rather be dead? Would you rather die HERE in the back of a CONVENIENCE STORE?" Tyler did not lie when he said "Raymond, you're going to die!" Raymond is going to die. He can choose to die after living miserably, working at the convenience store. Or he can choose to die after living a more fulfilled life, doing what he actually wanted to do. We let things that do not matter hold us back. We don't do things we know would makes us happy, because we'd have to sacrifice other things. Let that which does not matter truly slide. Do it! One day you will die anyway.

@@3dthenotme877 “Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel’s life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted.” And herein lies the center of Fight Club’s logical fallacy. Odds are, Raymond K. Hessel isn’t going to just float through life now, thinking “oh my god, I’m so grateful I’m alive” and healing hurt animals. Instead, his limbic system will likely stay in overdrive owing to the trauma of having a gun pointed at his head, owing to the realization that there is a crazy madman who talks to himself who knows where he lives and wants to kill him if he doesn’t become a veterinarian. My guess is that tomorrow will be the worst day of Raymond K. Hessel’s life. Anxiety will make decisions for him, for the rest of his life, even more than poverty already has. The protagonist ruining a man’s life to make a point to himself. Why do some assume he’s gonna be a vet? “Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel’s life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted.” I doubt it. the clerk won’t be able to eat tonight because he was just held up at gunpoint. He’ll have to report this to the police and go through the bullshit hassle of getting a new license. He’ll probably be too terrified to sleep, afraid to walk on the streets at night, possibly suffer PTSD . Tyler is nothing but a terrifying lunatic monster who gets carried away by impeding on other people’s freedoms to justify his own ideals. He forces a store clerk to have a renewed appreciation for life, but completely ignores the possibility that he could have induced some serious PTSD that could negatively affect this man for life. He inspires men of fight club to feel free and instinctual, only to then mentally manipulate them into his slaves and make them think/believe in only his own words and ideas. These men cant even think for themselves at the end and they worship Tyler like a God instead of worshiping their own self worth and ideals. Tyler is a terrorist with a God-like superiority complex, which is a bad thing and a contradiction to his own ideals of human beings. Tyler is like “I just made him appreciate his life more!” No, asshole, you just gave the poor guy crippling PTSD for the rest of his life. Don’t think that clerk did get to vet school. Probably suffered from PTSD, then became an alcoholic. It's called food for thought and that's the point that Tyler Durden fanboys miss, he's not a good guy.

We see Tyler and Jack (Ed Norton) interact with individuals at the same time throughout the film. The audience is granted the ability to physically see two different people, while the other characters obviously just only see Jack. When they talk, in some cases it is an internal dialogue. In this instance, most likely, Ed Norton was holding the gun and actually said “answer ME Raymond. His tone probably changed from stern to sympathetic as those were the words of Jack not Tyler. The two personas are fighting for control of one body, so depending on which personality is at the reins results in different demeanors and tones throughout a single conversation. Im sure if they were to remove Brad Pitt from the movie entirely, there would be scenes where Jack would think everything without speaking a word and other times he would talk out loud to someone who isn’t there. If you rewatch the film with this in mind, every time they are in a scene together, the other characters reactions are very telling of whether Jack is talking out loud to Tyler or speaking to him in his head.

I wonder what would have happened if Raymond is clueless to answer Tyler's Question, " What did you want to be?", just like me. I need six weeks just to survive Tyler's Question:) He orders Raymond to run for his true self. That is somewhat motivating.

I’d like to think that in the short term yes he would be severely screwed up. However, after the dust settles and he finds himself working toward his dream and then finally in his dream. The breakfast after he’s a certified vet would be the greatest meal he’s ever had.

Watch the movie again. Tyler used chaos, but always for good. Holding somebody at gun point and scaring them shitless also releases something in them that was dormant. The store clerk had a dead end job that he really didnt want but accepted. Tyler shows that our society is completely crazy. He wanted to open the clerks eyes so he would pursue his dreams rather than waste away in a stupid store. Tyler doesnt need or want anything from him other than that he starts living. Selfless. Thats it. Thats all. Chaos for good. All the terrible shit Tyler did was for the sole purpose of making people wake up and do something good with themselves and society.

Norton's character isn't Jack... (it's the first time i heard or see that "Jack" is the name of Norton's character) i think the clue of the movie is no one in any moment says norton's character. Remember: "it doesn't have your name, who are you?Corneliuos, Rupert, Travis, any of the stupid names you give each night"

Raymon ends up with PTSD from the experience, and from the looming thought of someone going to kill him if he doesn’t go to vet school. The anxiety caused by this pressure cripples his ability to focus and his stress so he can’t achieve school. Genius. Now if Raymond avoided being hit by a train, then he would have the best meal of his life.

That is one way to look at all this. I find this scene oddly inspiring, when I was almost quitting on my dream to be a lawyer and not bother with studying with the LSAT because it was too exhausting after work, I came to this scene religiously. If someone had a gun to my head and told me, you NEED to get into school or you will die, trust me I will put my 120% into it, no excuses. Now, I am in law school 2 years later and I owe a lot to Tyler Durden for that lol.

You´re absolutely right. Indeed it makes sense, in a Tyler sort of way; but the reality of being exposed to such violence does shit to many. It paralyzes you and your next meal may taste mechanical. So as you write the same could be for poor Raymond here.
