Fight Club plays with some of my deepest anxieties and I've always felt that hitting rock bottom is just the push i need to REALLY start living. For example, if i just ruin my whole face up with permanent scratches, i can finally stop caring about my looks. If i throw away my most valued possessions, i can finally stop being attached to these material things. This is precisely the feeling Fight Club reminds me of. The beauty of rock bottom

@@alexnahan969 Yes exactly. The movie is trying to show what kind of extreme levels this discontent can unfortunately push people towards. Since you quoted Neitzche, the movie literally shows the characters turning into Nietzsche's metaphorical "lion" (negative outcome) instead of the metaphorical "child" (positive outcome).

Dude, absolutely don't. You know how people often comment to videos like "Can't watch because of the annoying music", I've never seen anyone give the opposite remark. This is the way to go if you ask me, less is more. If you do, keep it minimal. At best music should carry your message, never be 50/50 partners with it like in so many videos. Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It is an inherent theme in the hero's journey. Something always needs to die for something else to be reborn. Rock bottom is experienced by the narrator at the very end of the movie when he shoots himself. It's the same with Stark in Endgame, with Rose at the end of Titanic, with the destruction of the grid at the end of Tron, with the destruction of Asgaard at the end of ragnarok.

If you look at the life of Buddha, before enlightenment, he used extreme asceticism to hit rock bottom. The story goes, he ate a single grain of rice until he could touch his spine through his stomach, rid himself of all worldly possessions and comforts. Then he had a revelation under the Bodhi Tree when he realized this wasn't the way to become enlightened, so he adopted the middle-way. This is similar to Jack killing Tyler with a bullet to the head, rejecting Tyler's extreme pursuit of rock bottom. Interestingly, it was his love for Marla Singer that made him first rebel against Tyler. So in essence, Fight Club is a hopeful love story that love is more redemptive than ruthless nihilism. Although such a simplistic message would discount the felt human experience Jack/Tyler had in bonding & fighting other men, building community, jamming culture with the acts of Project Mayhem, and discovering that he could control the power of Tyler once he integrated his shadow. To anyone who says "Fight Club is about nothing" or has a "juvenile message", they're simply stupid. It's deeply philosophical if you know anything about Jung, Nietzsche or Siddhartha. The goal isn't to be like Tyler. The goal is to find the middle path of Tyler's philosophy

This is the best interpretation of fight club I have ever seen. In fight club it went from one extreme way to the other. From full consumer life to the point the plan was to destroy the economy and create chaos. The point is to find that beautiful golden spot, between both of these. I believe it was when Narrator joined the fight club and he could feel alive. After project mayhem started and his friend got shot, it became too much.

There is beauty in a beautiful home, in a beautiful location you like and have chosen, in work you enjoy, in time off vacationing with family and friends to new places, on beaches, in mountains, at sea, in cities, exploring new cultures, people and food... and the list goes on. That is so much more beautiful than sitting somewhere meditating on not wanting anything (probably because you are scared of failing) and failing to do so!

Rock bottom is definitely a subjective experience and doesn't require the degree of extremism some movies and media portray. I emotionally had hit my rock bottom years back despite having everything else I could need in life, and through that emotional and mental low I was able to find myself on the path of self improvement. Don't stay at rock bottom, use it as the pivot point towards the right direction but never force yourself to remain in that dark spot

That line about rock bottom being boarding flights and wishing for a collision hits. Everyday I go to work. A large part of me wishes someone would run a light or a stop sign, Tbone my driver side fast enough to kill me on impact. Life has no allure anymore. I'm working a job I hate, I've lost what little family I ever had to either cancer or dementia. No friend I ever had still contacts me, no relationship ever works. I am alone. I've already gotten rid of most of my worldly possessions. I stopped caring about anything that wasn't required to have after everyone was gone. One day I hope I have the courage to I guess end it myself. But until then I'll keep daydreaming about that car, slamming into me and taking what's left of my pathetic life. 😞

Spent my 20s addicted to porn, gambling and also doubting myself. I hit rock bottom, and I mean absolute... I didn't even have a driver's license till 29. I've always been good looking and I thrived off that growing up, until I started losing some of my hair early 20s. Mentality completely vanished, confidence vanished... my desire for things vanished. The scariest thing I've earned from this is that I realized how pointless this all is, life in general and all these ideas and dreams we stress over so much are all important just to us little humans. But I'm much better now, the hardest thing for me now is trying to jump back into reality and being part of the world after seeing it from such a dark place.

I watch this video with a smirk on my face, because while we discuss how Tyler's professed insights can help us to live Christ centred lives [and I agree with you], Tyler lives a double life, where he constantly evades his responsibilities. He says that we can be free, but he spends so much time telling other people what to do. Why is he so concerned with us, when he can be free on his own? I think that it is due to his principles being used in a toxic way, which alienates him from others, assuming that he really existed in that story. He frees himself from worldly things, but what does he do with debt? He "tells" other people to release him of his debt, when he destroys the records. There is no consent in his free world. He is free, but he sends in others to destroy the buildings and orders others to tend the garden. He severs ties with those, who demand that he fulfill his responsibilities...yet ties are okay, when he gives orders. This film just gets better and better.

I see fight club as a group of brothers who care about each other, but they do that in a way where they are hard on each other in order to save them. They are hard on each other to show there is a strong man in there. Is this realistic in the real world? Not always, but it is satire. However, it still points to many useful truths.

I am currently going through my rock bottom.. After years of struggling in silence, while professionally and personally uplifting people.. I just cracked. For years, I struggled with anxiety, depression, isolation, and even bits of paranoia and fear... Only a couple of months ago I hit a breaking point (in retrospect it was clear it was coming, months leading up to that I was suffering through mini breakdowns). That night, I lashed out against my only friend. I threatened them, said terrible things to them, and then damaged their vehicle in a fit of rage. I immediately regretted my action, told them to call the police on me.. etc I ended up arrested, and in some legal and financial trouble. Now? I am at the lowest point in my life. I feel such intense shame, guilt, regret, humiliation..... Yet, it helped me see my life was going in an endless cycle of downward spirals. Perhaps, in a way now I am free. IT IS DIFFICULT.. I am closer to calling it quits than ever, but I know if I can survive this.. in a years time I will be stronger than ever. I will regain my honor, and find my redemption.

Its sad how alone so many are in an age where we have so much. Technology has actually divided us and modern politcs has too in many ways especially in how you point out many rely on the government. It is sad how many women you find who are single are married to politics and the government. Sure there are bad dudes who push them that way, but they should be wise enough to know with patience they can find a good man. There is good out there. We just have to patiently look for it. There is such a lack of community these days. Not to say it use to be perfect in the old days, but its worse now.

The sense of community. To the right and left you keep trying to create a schism. But we need to just try and understand each other and let go of what truly doesn't matter. But you want to be part of a cult that believes one way or the other then you are depriving yourself of a full life. Don't see religion, don't see political ideology, don't see all the divisions. My eyes are open! Love that. Exactly what the narrator said to Tyler at the end of the movie.

Ok everyone is always talking about rock bottom and taylor himself says “it’s only after we lose everything that we are free to become whatever we want” BUT nobody really talks about where or how you go after rock bottom and nobody talks about hitting rock bottom multiple times over extended amount of time like what Fiona Apple says “You get dragged down to the bottom so many times that it just seems like that's the safest place to be” maybe our whole life is supposed to be rock bottom after rock bottom that there’s no REAL rock bottom you know? I hope someone gets me

Good point. We have to remember that fight club is just a movie. The real world implications of rock bottom are not good. I think for the narrator, it was just a matter of shedding his consumer/corporate identities, getting rid of his posessions including his tv, his clothes, his furniture... and getting back to the basics

6 months ago the woman I planned to marry left without warning ... I lost my apartment .. my friends bailed ... 6 weeks ago I ended up on the street .. I'm 32 and everything I worked so hard for was gone in a few months ... However ... In the last 6 months I got jacked and see the world and my life much clearer ... For the 1st time in my life ik what's important to me and what isn't ... I saved 4k for a van and I'm going to do van life ... Get back into boxing and maybe start another business ... It's been soul crushing at times but the person I have become through that journey is priceless

I'm simply explaining Fight Club's anti consumerist message... what happens when you identify yourself with the things you own. Forget the title, focus on the substance bud.

Honestly, there's truly no beauty in it. If one could choose, they wouldn't choose to hit rock bottom, I'm sure. Yes there are lessons learned, or new skills acquired, like eating food you might not have eaten before because it's the only one you could afford or get from a food bank for instance, but other than that, there's no beauty in misery. And let's stop romanticizing poverty, or misery, because it's the true hell on earth being in rock bottom. Trust me.

I’m in no way romanticizing it. Fight club if anything is a movie about balance, reiterating your exact point. If you watch more of my videos you will see this.

you got it all wrong. read nietzsche. fear of alone, dark? will to community? oh my god..thats the opposite of films whole point to be a free INDIVIDUAL, not another sheep in sheep community,family,friends,bonds..all weak people need/crave others to survive bcs they are weak like jack in films start. lOve,coMpaSsiOn,coMmunity.. all for women or those emasculated men.. fight club is a club that seeks to create free strong independed unattached individuals, not another sheep-mass society.....everyone interprets fight club from its own perspective/character but just.. presented interpretation is more like opposite of independent ubermench, individual above weak mass.. so many weak non nietzscheian interrpetations of fc.. sad

You missed the point brother. Fight club is a love story. One man’s search for intimacy. Check out my video essay on this. PS, Project mayhem created sheep like individuals. It stripped individuals of their name, identity and turned them into parroting droids meant for sacrifice… check out my Video essay on this as well.
