Growing up in the South (Columbus GA) during the late 60's; I can remember my grandmother making homemade soap. Her process wasn't as hi-tech as Grants and she didn't have a logo mold for her soap blocks, lol. All she had was a huge tin washing tub over an open fire, the fat straps from the pig that we slaughtered for meat the day before and a box of lye. I don't ever remember her adding color nor smell to her soap; but, I don't remember her soap ever smelling like bacon either, it didn't really have a smell. One batch would yield many pounds of soap and I remember her doing it about once or twice a year; whenever we would slaughter a hog. There was always an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies from her garden, pork to eat and no one ever had to go to the store to get soap! You just used your knife to cut yourself off a chunk to wash-up. I also remember her soap feeling gritty for some reason. I wonder if there are people out there who are still making soap the old fashion way and not just as a hobby? Thanks for this video, it brought back some good memories of growing up and made me think of some of the other things that we use to do back then which the younger generation out there take for granted. I've seen a few comments about making soap using this process, like "this is nasty.." or "I'll never let that touch my skin..."; when most of the people making these comments don't realize that some of the old ways of producing products are still in practice today; companies have just industrialized the process and in most cases substituted harmful chemicals in place of the natural ingredients to make the production processes faster and cheaper.
@MetaBloxer10 жыл бұрын
There is a chance the soap was gritty because the fat wasn't purified like he did in the video with the water.

Kenneth, I am a soap maker! I make large batches of soap a few times per year. Mine are vegan soaps. I use hemp, almond, apricot seed, olive, and coconut oil, along with shea butter and essential oils. Soap makers often add exfoliates such as ground oats to make soaps a bit scrubier. Natural hand made soaps are better than anything available on the market!
@KennethElstonBAK10 жыл бұрын
Hummm... LaLa O, some of those sound good enough to actually eat LOL. I'll bet that they smell good, especially the coconut!! But, then I love the smell of coconut, it's the only kind of lotion that I will buy. How do you get the variety of soap flavors? Are you using chemical flavors? I'm trying to figure out how you would use natural apricot with the cooking and still get the smell. BTW: My daughter has been vegan for over 2 years now and I have to tell her about your soaps; I've never heard of vegan soaps. Being vegan is not the life for me; but, I am proud that she is doing it, because it's something that she set her mind to doing and has stuck with it for over 2 whole years now. It makes me sad sometimes, because she was my little hot wings and BBQ road dog tester. Any where we went traveling for vacation, we had to find and test out the best hot wings and BBQ joint in town and give our expert opinion of the offerings

Don't worry. I always say, a pinch of virgin's blood here and there can improve anything. And anyways, the blood is just a catalyst to the demon summoning; it won't happen without the correct rites. The soap might leave a slight red stain on your skin though, and it's hard to get off. But it's worth it, because other than that, soap with virgin's blood is unusually effective. Definitely worth the minor stain.

Quick tip, use a paint mixing container instead of cookware because if you don't get the right ratios, it could ruin the cookware. And lye and water get extremely hot and make lots of fumes, so wear eye protection and dust masks. And never lick it all the way, because it can kill you, so just touch like a wet finger to it and touch it with your tounge, and its plenty enough. I have a soap business and I'm still scared of the fact of chemical burns.

Just thought I would clarify something here. Yes sodium hydroxide is harmful. But only 7g of it are being used. 7g => 0.175 moles of sodium hydroxide Now lard (from meat) usually contains a fat like 'propane-1,2,3-triyl tripalmitate'. 70g => 0.0868 moles of fatty acid (approximately) Sodium hydroxide reacts three times with fatty acids. Meaning that 0.260 moles (0.0868 x 3) of sodium hydroxide (10.4g), would need to be used for this reaction to go to completion. By only using 7g, the fatty acid remains in excess, meaning that almost all the sodium hydroxide is going to be used up. The products of the reaction is glycerol (a moisturizer) and a sodium salt (an emulsifier which connects fats to water) So even though dangerous chemicals are used. The amounts they have been used in make it rather safe. CAUTION: The reaction isn't that 'fast'. Leave if for a day so most of the sodium hydroxide reacts to form something safe.

My grandperants taught me this but with a large cake pan (you cut the bars as you would a cake before it's really hard) and wood stove ash instead of lye. Old time farmers didn't waste anything. When you slaughter a pig there are a ton of trimmings you don't put on the dinner table. She'd just let it sit in a rendering pot (any big pot really) on the wood stove for a long time until she seperated the fat or cooked down the soap. They'd use berries for dye and scent (juniper I remember as one and blueberries) so the whole process turned out to be free soap. Don't think I' d spend 5 bucks on a pound of beacon to do this when you can buy handmade soaps for less than half that. As they got older she'd just make it for laundry without any dye and would shave or grate the bars to make soap flakes that would dry and really just look like laundry soap. She'd use a solid bar for stain removal like my grandads shirt collars and I can't remember ever seeing them in anything but crisp and clean clothes. It works great but unless you cook a lot of pork etc... then expect it to be a conversation piece that's not used. Love you though Grant. Not always practicle but educational and I think that's really the point you try to make. lol (tons of your tips are though and I use them so much- thank you for all of it- you're amazing, your kids are cute and your wife is stunning- you're a rockstar by my definition ;))

***** just so you know most soap is fat. The fat is put through a process known as saponification. This is the chemical process that turns the fat into soap. This is what the sodium hydroxide is for.

Cool video tutorial! I am a soap maker! This was amusing! I've never made just one bar. I have also never made bacon soap but, I am aware that lard and tallow (beef fat) are common soap making fats. I prefer making vegan soaps with coconut, hemp, almond, and olive oils, as well as shea butter, honey, and essential oils. This was fun! Thank you for sharing! More people need to know how things are made!

Is this safe? He used a lot of warnings on that one part and then he licked it and washed his hands with it.
@crazyfvck9 жыл бұрын
+Amanda T Uh.. Those warnings were for the LYE, not the soap that he made. The lye has a chemical reaction with the bacon fat and that is what makes the soap.
@kylkinger9 жыл бұрын
Once it reacts with the lard it isn't harmful? I'm sorry. I'm not educated on the topic.
@crazyfvck9 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's safe.. It is just like any other soap. Think of the lye like raw chicken. It can make you sick if you handle it without washing your hands, or if you eat it raw. But once you cook it or prepare it with something else, it's ok. Make sense?
@Wizard7479 жыл бұрын
You guys.... You are all wrong... Lye, a base, is the highest thing on the pH scale (14). Fat, when rendered down with heat can be an astonishing -6 on the ph scale (acidic). The fat in this example "dilutes" the high basic level of lye, and brings it down to a 10, which is like a chalk tablet you take for stomach aches. So, to answer your question, NO, lye is not safe. Do not dare put it in your mouth in any amount. That's why he warned you not to use aluminum pots, because it will literally eat through the bottom of it. Soap that has been rendered with fat on the other hand, is. As long as it is natural, you can eat it (meaning it contains animal fat).
@crazyfvck9 жыл бұрын
Nathan Bradley uh.. She was asking whether or not the finished SOAP was safe, not the lye.

Almost six years late to the party, but I'm going to be trying this one out myself in a couple days. I've got some lye and a scale to measure it arriving tomorrow. Right now I'm heating up a pot of water, to melt some thermoplastic beads and see if I can wrap it around some blocks of paraffin wax, to create some nice sized soap molds. If this works out, I think I will finally have found a healthy way to make use of bacon fat.
