I'm late to the game, so to speak, but having just watched only two videos, I can see why so many of you loved them, and the man who made them for us. I'm so sorry for everyone's loss: his friends, his family, and his followers. I can tell already that the King of Random was a great guy, and a terrific KZbin instructor. I guess I'm actually luckier than most of you as his whole library of videos is new to me, so I can enjoy them for the first time. I just hope that KZbin keeps memorial accounts like this open forever so that we may never forget his name or his legacy that he left behind. I'm sorry I never got the chance to know you, King of Random, but thank you all the same for your wonderful and entertaining videos that you made. I watched this video in 4th grade and immediately was fascinated by space, which in turn made me love engineering. I wanted to be a NASA Aerospace Engineer for the next few years and loved to make things. I was then in a car accident and knew I wouldn't be able to become an aerospace engineer like I wanted to, but I still wanted to make things I thought were cool. I picked up programming and animation as a hobby and now program different robots and other contraptions. Everything I've made for the last nearly 8 years since October 2012 is because of this one video. Grant Thompson made me who I am. He's probably the most influential person in my life despite the fact that I never even met him. Rest in peace, Grant. You are and always will be the best

If you want to make a homemade missile. Reduce the sugar by 6%. Replace it with magnesium dust, reduce the temp but cook for 1 hour till its black. This will burn much hotter & faster which propels heavier loads. Then stuff the nose of the missile with acetone peroxide (it should be short as possible with no air between the nose and the base). At the inside tip put a very small amount of damp nitrogen triiodide crystals. We once aimed one of these homemade missiles at a porta-john from 100 feet away. It completely missed the john, flew behind it into the forest... then a few seconds later we heard the loudest blast of our lives. Like a stick of dynamite going off. As we were running we could hear branches crackling then the subtle thump of a tree. We went back the next day and found a tall, but thin, 4" tree with the middle of it completely gone.

It didn't get too hot. A localized hot spot probably ignited it, which is especially likely since it's a microwave. It doesn't cook evenly, so you'll need something like a burner.

No one should have considered a microwave as an option. He tells you step by step what to do. Doing anything wrong can result in problems. He specifically stated to move the burner someplace where it won't catch anything on fire for the reasons that it isn't safe.

The stoichiometric mixture for potassium nitrate and sugar is an 85% / 15% mixture. The mixture should first be dissolved in water and then the water evaporated. That causes the potassium nitrate and sugar to precipitate out together to form a nearly perfect mixture. Otherwise you would need to grind the potassium nitrate into a very fine powder.

But still, isn't it a bit more dangerous because it does have the potential to be a bomb? If I really wanted the perfect ratio I would do the chemistry myself but the video shows the semi-predictable results of the process he used so I know what to expect.

This is really interesting! I don't have time to page through 5,000 comments, so perhaps the idea's already been mentioned, but I wonder if you could put the blocks on a scale in the same orientation as the yellow block, and determine the amount of thrust each mixture produces based on the change in mass and the change in time. Of course, as the fuel burns, its mass will decrease, which, together with the force of gravity, has to be factored into the amount of downward force recorded by the scale to determine the overall force of thrust. Do some mixtures produce more thrust than others? How can thrust be maximized? Finally, can the amount of thrust generated can be calculated together with the mass of the rocket to determine how high (in ideal circumstances) the projectile can fly? Maybe Sixty Symbols or Minute Physics can help calculate the data!

might happen you just get a splattered can all over your neighbourhood. you sent it flying it get´s hoote,r the hotter it get´s the faster the reaction will go+ the gasses created (oxygen, Nitrogen, nitrous gasses and CO2) will expand ith temperature making it more like a new years eve rockte, just bigger, louder and with much harder rubbish coming down. don´t try up scaling this at least not with a hard container. you WILL hurt somebody with the junk coming down.
