A Mute Swan family get too close to a Coot's nest... Fight. And don't even get me started about the trash nest.

It's very upsetting to see litter strewn everywhere. I hope there are parts of the country left where people take their litter away with them or put it in bins, but I see huge amounts in places. A few get fined and everyone else gets away with it. Anyway, it was great to see the valiant protection of nest and eggs!

They're pretty badarse at my local park too! They really go full on protect when swans, ducks, gulls come near their nests. Thankfully its not as filthy.

yeah i felt that too, usually swans are crueler to the smaller guys but these were in parent-mode and thought it better to just clear away, they seem more respectful during cygnet season

What a beautiful life u own, that u could see a wild bird's nest around u freely, and they feel comfortable around people. I'm an Asian, and u would never find this kind of thing here. They Will be catched by ur neighbors as soon as possible. And btw is that a tin next to the coot's nest? A little bit sad to see that:(

Its sad to see the rubbish around the nest, but here in the netherlands we found out that the coots use the thrash to make there nest. I does not mean its good to trow your trash in to the water now but at least some one is recycling.

I’ve been into bird watching for a while now, bought myself some decent binoculars and the RSPB bird book, LOVE IT!! very interesting when I’m out birdwatching. At my local golf course I see so many birds, love watching the kites hovering over, I see Ring Necked Parakeets Aswel plus many more:) what this Coot is doing is not picking a fight for no reason, it says in the RSPB book that Coots are VERY territorial so the swans were coming too close to the nest, the COOT was telling the Swans to back off!!! And HUMAN beings are DISGUSTING!!!! I see it on my walks Aswel rubbish everywhere.

Reminds me off that angry af tiny penguin protecting some random emperor penguin babies from a bird twice it's size. The babies were also bigger than their protector, but the bird didn't want any shit with that savage penguin. :D

The coots I've seen were all perfectly peaceful and docile. I once got close to one and her babies. :) Then again, it's a place with lots of people and lots of geese.. so I guess they have no choice but to get along.

Coots are like Scots. They hate everyone. Even other coots 😂 We have lots of them along with swans, Canada geese and mallards, but when they're in the mood for a fight, they'd stand up to anyone. The only birds not scared are the seagulls.

Coots are like ninjas honestly, that coot didn't even get a single damn hit from the swan on it it was so maneuverable and like a well-trained karate expert or something. Angry moorhen parents attacked our swan once and it was like "WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!" and swam off.

Strange, I have learnt that Mute Swans and Coots tolerate each other. The Swan is the defender, and the Coot is the early warning. I wonder what happened?

Yeah this river is so full of rubbish it's awful, there are a few people who clean up the river and the surrounding area, but we pause during the nesting season. I wish we didn't have to do this but sadly the trash keeps flowing..

There's a good few people, myself included who have been cleaning up the area and building habitat for wildlife for over 20 years. We clean this part of the river in kayaks outside of nesting season, sadly other people trash the place way quicker than we can clear it up. It drives me crazy!
