The heat index is in the triple digits here in Alabama. I lost two crookneck squash, one to a vine borer, the other to a puma. Yes we have puma, cougar, mountain lion, what ever you want to call it hunting on our property. It got two of our cats this month. Japenese beetles, pickleworms, army worms, hornworms, and squash bugs are bad this year. For them, I spray with spinosad after sunset when the pollinators are away from the garden. I spray my squash and cucumbers with Immunox every ten days to prevent powdery mildew and rust. Fungi is bad in the southeast with the hot temperatures and humidity. I have it mixed to spray the fruit trees to prevent cedar gall rust, which I do two days before forecasted rain. This is the first year that I've had zero issues with fungi. Normally, my summer squash and cucumbers are heavily infected and coming out by now. I've already harvested more summer squash this year, than prior years, and they are still producing. I'll be starting my falll garden soon, so they will be coming out of the ground in about six weeks.

@@CliffWarren The mail lady saw a large puma at the end of our driveway at about 2:00 pm days before the last cat disappeared-dinner for puma. I just got some baby hens, and assembled a hen house for them. I have a 10W x 13L x 6.5H scheduled for delivery Monday. I am going to have to make the hen house predator proof. I live out in the sticks, so plenty of predators, bobcat, bear, possum, racoon, puma, coyote, gray & red fox, hawks, about every venomous snake, and more. I don't go out at night if it can be avoided. If I do, I carry a loaded rifle-just in case.

That would be great news!

The leaves on my Chefs choice orange tomato are curling up. Is this stress or some kind of disease?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 9 күн бұрын
Could be either of the items below - see which one best fits your scenario, Renee. Water Stress: Both overwatering and underwatering can cause leaf curling. Check the soil moisture level to ensure it's consistent but not waterlogged. Temperature Extremes: High temperatures can cause leaf curling as the plant tries to conserve moisture. Wind: Strong winds can cause physical stress to the plant, leading to leaf curl. Herbicide Damage: Exposure to herbicides, either through drift or contaminated compost, can cause leaves to curl. Do any of these resonate? Kim
@reneegrubbs990
@reneegrubbs990 8 күн бұрын
@@CaliKim29 I don’t think it’s a watering issue, I have drip set for twice a day. It may very well be the wind. We’ve had some pretty blustery days here lately. When the Terminix man comes I make sure he doesn’t go near my garden beds! Ugh. The plant is still putting out tomatoes it just looks worse for the wear.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 8 күн бұрын
Agreed. Strong winds can break stems, leaves, and branches, leading to reduced plant vigor and fruit production. And, wind can increase the rate of water evaporation from both the soil and the plant leaves, leading to dehydration...

Will these help with blight?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 9 күн бұрын
Hi Jackeeo - blight is a hard disease so it will not make the spots go away on the leaves, but it will help stop the spread, especially if you catch it early. Your best bet is to prune the affected leaves and spray the rest of the plant to control the spread. Hope this helps - keep us posted!
