The theatrical version of this film really did Balian dirty and made it seem like he gained his fighting skills almost magically. The directors cut, the only version of this film that should be watched, makes it clear that Balian was already a well experienced combat veteran with multiple tours of duty in various European wars as a combat engineer (a sapeur in his native French).

Not worth the risk. If he really turns out to be a nobleman, then cutting him down from horseback could break the peace that his own King has negotiated. Fighting him in a fair duel, on the other hand, would not (indeed, Saladin himself sends a letter to Jerusalem stating that he did not consider Balian winning the fight and killing his man to be a breach of the treaty). If it turns out he's a nobody, then it makes no difference. If it turned out he really was a Baron, it makes all the difference.

@BravoDox
@BravoDox 8 ай бұрын
Ridley Scott has made several of those now. He's sort of a specialist in period pieces. The Duellists 1492: Conquest of Paradise Gladiator Kingdom of Heaven Robin Hood Exodus: Gods and Kings The Last Duel Napoleon I highly recommend The Last Duel; it's based on actual events. It's a Rashomon-like tale taken from records of an actual medieval court case. It tells the same story three times, based on the actual recorded testimony of three different witnesses. Then the king (who is the judge) is unable to determine what the truth is and allows it to be settled by, as Game of Thrones would call it, "Trial by Combat". The title comes from the fact that it was the last private "gentleman's duel" that was legally allowed in France.

It's ok, but there are a lot of lies embedded within it. They make a good portion of the Christians look as if they started the mess when this is not the case. As a matter of fact the Christians never would have entered the Middle East had it not been for Muslims trying to enter Europe to conquer it first. Which they had been doing for the better part of the past 400yrs prior. So the Christians had every right to enter into the Middle East and face their enemy, and even enjoy the spoils of war. The Muslims certainly were no better. But this movie tries to make it seem as if they are. And that just is not true. It is a good war epic none the less. But I would have liked it much more if it did not pander to the Western minority by telling such embellishments and lies.

“Why should he? He is a knight” is such a BS attitude, but it checks out historically, all the way up to the American civil war. Southern gentlemen had strict rules about behavior and honor, but if you weren’t a southern gentleman they could just beat you without you having any right to defense, even if you perished. The most famous example happened in the US senate. A slaver named Brooks was insulted by an abolitionist named Sumner. A few days after Sumner gave a speech on the evils of slavery (calling out a friend of Brooks) brooks came into the senate hall with a few goons that had smuggled in revolvers. The guns held the senate at bay while Brooks smashed Sumner’s brains with his cane (effectively a mace because of a solid gold ball on top). Brooks was fined 200 dollars and Sumner was rendered completely disabled for the rest of his short life. However when a friend of Sumner’s baited Brooks into challenging him to a duel brooks chickened out when he found out the friend was a crack shot.

No, it was because it was a really awful movie with ridiculous ideas throughout. One highlight was when Orlando's Bloom taught the Arabs how to farm their own land after never having lived in that climate. Also, the hilarious cliche Templar knights who were like typical bad guy characters with no depth whatsoever. The whole fish out of water character plot is a very cheap and easy way to make a story and its old and boring. It's too bad, they had a huge budget and they threw it all in the garbage. And yes, I've seen the directors cut.
@abstrakt26

@@norbitcleaverhook5040 I could understand that if it was to be a truely historicsl picture, but it wasn't and it presented a more POV balanced take of a chaotic world from one individual whom had only known strife, suffering and had been taken advantage of until his fortunate father appeared....yes it's hollywood and of course theatrical but it heralded ideologies and critical thought of what was then considered heresy and blasphemy when compared to the churches decree...same reason powers have anomosity and disdain towards other religions and governments today, yes?

@@strategicrager1891 I agree bear in mind this is fiction. These films have humour in. Also poetic language. The twist was that servant in this scene is the actual fighter and not the translator..the translator saw the fight as entertainment. Sometimes the plot and writing don't always make sense. Things happen purely to serve the plot. It's a good film but many things are wrong with it that don't make sense.

@@boshirahmed oh of course, I meant nothing against the film I’ve heard nothing but praise for it and I do plan to watch it. I just also think that in reality that a noble would absolutely only respect a fair duel with another noble not that duels were anything close to movie theatrics and all.

@@strategicrager1891 duels did happen. It was a superstitious period. Nobles beloved god was on their side and would guarantee victory. Both sides believed it so if someone refused it would damage the motivation of their fighting force.
