FightBox REVIEW: Is it better than a Hitbox?

This is actually the first all button controller I bought a while back. The 250 for the hitbox was too much of a gamble since I didn't know if I would even enjoy it. Alot of people say that the stickless controllers are more ergonomic for the hands but for me it actually felt the opposite. My hands started to cramp fairly easy from the new position so my transition came to an halt 😂😂 About the controller it's amazing and well worth the money if you don't want to buy the official hirbox.

@johnlund3088 I had a similar issue. The 24mm buttons for my right hand were too small and made my hands feel cramped. I tried my friends Shiokenstar controller and that made a big enough difference that i decided to give them another shot.

I just ordered my Fightbox a couple of days ago. I got the F8 PS5 version. I bought my original Hitbox in 2014, It was time for an upgrade. I have to say I did get my money's worth because it still works to this day.

I actually have the Fightbox B1 - I initally got it as a cheap hitbox-style controller to test, before committing to a proper build. The only thing i wasnt a fan of was the Mechanical switches on the B1. I much prefer Sanwas. Great budget hitbox though! On that note, my Eternal Rival stuff came in last week and I got my full build completed and I'm very happy with it! Assembly was very easy and simple and the customer service from ER was great. Would highly recommend for a future video from you!!

@@Agelesslink Depends on how big you like them. You can get PS5 compatible Minis, so if something like the Snack Box Micro appeals to you more over the traditional Hit Box, then the Mini B1 might be up your alley.

I like the price of the B1 so I’m interested in getting it but i hope the buttons aren’t too far away for my fingers because in the past I’ve had problems trying to make tight commands due to the buttons being out of reach funny enough. I was scared away from purchasing one of these precisely because of the similarity in branding to Hitbox, came off as a cheaper looking rip-off but it's good to know they're selling quality products. Still a bit pricey for what you get IMO but the fight-stick market isn't cheap to begin with I suppose.

Yeah, I wish they had more of their own unique vibe, but the unit itself felt pretty good. As far as price goes, I usually consider trying to assemble oneself, and if it's already got a Brook PS4 board (like $40) plus the PS5 addition (like $60), we're already in for a hundred. If someone wants something ready to go off the shelf, or can't find a reasonable case option, then this starts looking better and better. I was pleasantly surprised with it all things considered. Your review of the f1 convinced me to purchase the f10-PC! Arrived in 2 weeks. Love it. For anyone wondering, they now detail what combinations of buttons to press to change the SOCD mode further down the product’s page(in my case I use SOCD-Neutral to be inline with Capcom). Also, you can make any of their PC versions work with the PS5 simply by connecting it to a Wingman FGC Converter from Brook.

@@imohbalu They use Brook products for all of their models except the pure PC one. That means you can go to the Brook website and download the appropriate firmware upgrade files. A launcher will prompt you to hold start and select as you plug in your stick. Then it should recognize the PCB and initiate an update. You can choose between "tournament" or the previous SOCD cleaning mode. The tournament cleaning is compliant with the newest CPT change regarding D+U=N. The other mode has it so it's D+U=U. You can install whatever one you want. I think these controllers come with the newest firmware as their standard though.

i bought the pc version of the DIY RAC J800B around the beginning of the month, and i gotta say it's quite the box for its price. it has 3 different modes: xbox 360 x input, switch controller and ps3 mode which i never really expected, but it's actually really useful and i even play switch games (that im able to, like kirby returns to dreamland deluxe) with it, and it's a blast with the DIY option i got it with custom artwork along with some button colors, and it's pretty sweet

Tbh, I don't see how the hitbox can even compare. It's a box with sanwa buttons, so is the fightbox. One works on PS5, the other does not, it's a no brainer tbh.

Hey, after watching your video I finally got my hands on a FightBox myself and I love it. Just one thing about the Brook board update: Which one am I supposed to download and then how does it work? Because I have downloaded the PS3/PS4 Fighting Board firmware update and there I have to press PS + Share/Select. I tried it with every button and none worked the way I thought they would. So which buttons do I have to press while plugging the Box to the PC and which firmware update do I need?

You'll need to download the version of firmware that corresponds to the PCB you have in your stick. I loaned my FightBox out, so I don't have one to test for you, but when the menu prompts you, I'd hold down two of the aux functions and plug in the stick. Didn't work? Unplug, hold two different buttons, and plug the stick back into the PC. Rinse and repeat until you find the correct combo. The green start button should become available when you have it correct. The new Capcom Pro Tour compliant firmware is called "Tournament" in the Brook drop-down menu, I believe. I figured that would be the default on newer builds. You can check in training mode though. Hold down and then press the jump function. Did you jump? Then that's old firmware. Did you stand up slightly? Then it's likely the new firmware where D+U=neutral. Good luck.

Hey Hush. I got the PC version which has a different PCB than the PS5 Brooks one. I keep hearing people are having issues with the PC version so I was wondering if i should just get the brook PS5 PCB anyway and just swap it out to avoid issues. If i need to do that, is that a straight forward transplant or will i need to glue stuff and fenangle it?

What was in the PC version? A Brook Zero? Also, I'm not sure why you'd need a full PS5 one if you only plan on playing on PC. Problems can be sometimes fixed with upgrading the firmware, so maybe start there. If you want to replace the Brook Zero because yours is still having problems, you can replace with a RP2040 Advanced Breakout Board (something like what you see here: sgfdevices.com/products/sgf-gp2040-ce-advanced-breakout-board-pe ) I don't know how they have it set up in your stick, but worst case scenario you may need another wiring harness or something if they've done too much solder/glue stuff to the board. A new board plus a wiring harness would be a fairly easy swap though since they are basically plug and play. Still, you should look at the rationale behind changing it all out, especially if you haven't encountered problems yourself or don't need PS5 compatibility. Anyway, good luck!

But the board inside was a p3/p4 board, so I couldn't install it without soldering, which I don't know how to do 😅 so now I'm stuck with the upgrade board lol but these are quality products. I have a mini update hush. The F9 was perfect for me. Shiokenstar Layout (Hori stick preference) and the 30mm attack buttons worked out well for me. I only wish I had a few extra buttons mapped for L3 and R3 by the attack buttons for that quick and dirty DI and parry. Truth be told i am having a very rough time learning and sticking with the leverless but im starting to get the feel of combos and things. Im trying to do at least an hour a day until my ring finger stops feeling so sluggish.

If you need another button mapped as R3, I actually just released a video yesterday on a dual button COMBO extension you could install there (I don't know what board you have, so ease of installation might vary). Anyway, I'm glad you're still at it. 40% of viewers of this channel reported it took them a month or more to get proficient at it, so definitely don't give up too soon. Button swaps will be easy with this. If you want something clicky, you may need to get some tactile switches in a Crown 202 or Gamer Finger or something. Check out my arcade button vid to see the different sounds. I think I put a cherry blue in a 202 in that vid so you can hear if that is clicky enough for your liking too.

I don't see why it would be an issue, so without tearing it apart and testing, I'm gonna commit to a yes. I typically go with screw-ins on most of my builds and I don't think I've ever seen an instance where they didn't work. Like, sometimes a case is designed with snap-ins in mind so there will be little grooves for the tabs so the screw-ins sort of lock in place, but there was nothing like that on this one. Screw-ins should be safe.

I don't think you can enable that how it sits out of the box. It has a Brook board with two options for firmware (one with the old style of D+U, and one with the newer CPT-compliant neutral style). You'd need to look into another solution if you wanted that enabled. Thanks for watching.

How do sanwas compare to keyboard switches?

Mmmm...hard to say since there are so many switches out there. I have another video on this channel where I compare different buttons. I think that Sanwa buttons have a fairly low actuation threshold compared to some other models. If you want keyboard switches in your buttons, you could grab some Gamer Fingers or some Crown 202s and carefully replace to your choice of switch.

@@elo_888 No, I wouldn't say that. Switches are all preference and have little to do with combo consistency imo. A default option in a lot of all-button controllers is the red switch (50 gf), but I typically like dark yellows which have a higher actuation threshold. The reason being is that I can rest my fingertips on the buttons so I don't fatigue as quickly and I get fewer accidental inputs since a press needs to be slightly more purposeful. I have a whole video on this channel showcasing different switch options if you'd like to learn more. But at the end of the day, it's preference imo. Thanks for watching!

This one came with it installed, and I'm also not sure what the internals look like on your model. But! If it's exactly the same as this here (it probably is), then get your Brook PS5 upgrade daughter board, pause the video at 2:11 , and install the wires as shown there. There should only be a few new connections. The red and black wires coming off it will lead to the power and ground, respectively. Good luck.

Slide your left hand fingers from right, to down, to left (all in one smooth motion). Then, as you finish with that left hand input, with your right hand, hit a the appropriate level punch for which strength SPD you want together with the jump function. It's all very quick. The benefit to Gief's SPD is that it works the same on both sides (even with joystick), so you only need to practice this one way and it will work consistently. Good luck!

The version in this video is both CPT legal and PS5 compatible. You may need to update the firmware if it isn't but that's easy and Brook has a "tournament" firmware update for download on its website and it all installs super easily. If you went with a different non-PS5 model, the Wingman should work there too.

@@gerradwalker346 Yes it does so long as you have a version with Brook internals. And if for some reason it's running an old version, you can still update it yourself. Download the appropriate firmware from the Brook website, run the files and it will boot up a prompt, hold down two buttons (I think it's like start and select, but it will prompt you to tell you which), plug the USB into your computer while you're holding those buttons, and then click update. You should be able to choose from "tournament" or "controller" and the one that's labeled "tournament" is the new one that is Capcom Pro Tour compliant. Very straightforward process, but like I said, a lot of the newer Brook stuff comes ready to go with the new firmware update. Good luck!

What version did you get? You would need a board inside that plays nicely with the PS4. The Brook PS4 board or Universal should enable that compatibility. If you got a board that's PC only, then there's nothing you can do outside of buying/installing a new PCB.

I think a Brook Wingman XB adapter would work for that. But if I knew I would be playing on all consoles regularly, I would just get the Universal PS5 version since it plays on Xbox and PS stuff, and it would all be ready to go under the hood.

I actually loaned it to a friend a month ago so haven't seen it or played on it for a while. But it has Sanwa buttons and Brook internals, so component-wise, it was as good as anything else. I also didn't notice any issues in my time after this review, so I'm still comfortable with my assessment in this video.

how di you download the firmware my fight controler is now bricked

1) Make sure you know what type of board you have in there. 2) If it's Brook like this video, then you'll need to go to the Brook Accessory website. 3) Find the corresponding PCB in their lists of downloads and then download the appropriate one. 4) Run the files you downloaded. Your computer might try to stop you, but click the okay and get it going. 5) Once it's running, it should prompt you to hold down two buttons (I think it's start and select off the top of my head, but just read the prompt) while you connect your device to the computer with the USB cord. If you did it right, then the prompt will change. Click on either "tournament" or "controller" depending on which SOCD mode you want. The "tournament" one reflects the newest CPT changes and makes it legal in Capcom tourneys. 6) Hit start. It will fully update in like 5 seconds and show the update was finished/successful. Everything is done and you can unplug the device. Good luck!

@@eriksprow9551 Not off the top of my head. They will be two of the aux buttons on the top. So what you can do is press down two of them and plug in the device. If the screen didn't change or prompt you to hit start, then you chose the wrong ones. Simple unplug the device, pick a different 2-button combo and try it again.

I don't see why that would be an issue. I loaned mine out to a buddy, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't printed directly on the acrylic, so that means you should be able to print and cut your own to insert.

Which PC version? If it's the FightBox B1-MINI, then they should have hot-swappable switches so you can change them to your preferred vibe. If it's the model seen here where they are using Sanwa, you can pull out those and pop in some Seimitsu, Crown, or whatever else you'd like. Good luck!

The one you see featured in this video specifically does not, but they have one with an Xbox PCB on their website for ~$180. Navigate to the FightBox F1 page, and then change the version in the drop-down.

@@SoNicBOoMX9362 I wouldn't mess with one if I didn't have to, meaning, if I knew I needed to play on Xbox as well as PS5 or whatever, I'd just get the appropriate internals from the get-go. If you need something beyond the F1-XBOX (the one compatible with Xbox like you mentioned needed), you could select the F1-UV (which has a Brook Universal) or the F1-UFB-UP5 (which has the Universal PCB with the PS5 daughterboard upgrade). If you really need the Wingman for some reason, then this should work with that as I understand it, but I don't have one of my own to personally test just yet.

@HushMySweet1 Really appreciate the detailed reply. I already bought the Fightbox, unaware at the time, that the version I purchased wasn't Xbox compatible. I already own the wingman XB2 USB convertor. This little piece of kit works a treat with 99% of 360/PS3/PS4/PS5 and Switch pads/sticks etc. It is very safe to use, just need to make sure you download the firmware updates. Was unsure if the fightbox/hitbox models worked with it though, as my fightbox hasn't arrived yet. Cheers.
