The perils of low altitude and high speed. Just this past week a F/A-18E Super Hornet from VFA-151 NAS Lemoore collided with a mountain in this very training area. Tragically the pilot was killed and my prayers and condolences to the VFA-151, Navy and the pilots family. Which being a former F/A-18 mechanic and aviation professional I would consider part of my very extended family and would hope all aviation professionals would feel the same. Pilots, mechanics, ATC, support, engineers, manufacturers etc......
@JonBecker815 жыл бұрын
Stephen Cannon I can see how easy it would be for one of them to crash into the mountain. You almost lose your depth perception because of the coloring. You can’t tell if the hill in front of you is two miles away or 1000 ft away. I don’t know if that’s why he did or not but it looks very dangerous. At the same time they have to train for this kind of terrain.

The most fun I ever had was riding in a friend's Aero Commander 100 and gliding at idle down Star Wars canyon, a lot lower and slower than those jets do Always wondered if anyone filmed us. we always liked to fly from the hot springs in saline valley to Trona airport by way of Star Wars canyon. this was back in the 1980s and now i would be afraid of getting hit by a jet flying there now.

Great video. What do the letters on the tail stand for? HN or XE or SH and stuff?
@TheKusa53 жыл бұрын
@@laca7676 Navy tail codes stand for whatever carrier air wing a particular plane belongs to USAF tail codes stand for whatever base They're out of, or for some special cases Like the FF tail code of the first fighter wing it stands for a historical legacy of a unit, ANG tail codes are typically from whatever state they're from like MI for Michigan, or in some exceptions like a BC for Battle Creek.

What are the twin strakes for located just aft of the f-18’s speed brake, top of fuselage at 2:03?
@Locutus4945 жыл бұрын
Where are you talking about; the Super Hornet does not have a speed brake.
@stephencannon31405 жыл бұрын
It does top of fuselage between the rudders. Their are also two fences on the forward fuselage behind the cockpit. For legacy Hornets A-D model these were to help provide a vortex and potentially increase Ange of attack. This caused some unintended consequences by too much air and fatigue. The ones I believe you are referring to is at the base of the vertical stabilizers (Rudder). This was quite simply a reinforcement bracket at the base of the vertical stabilizer to prevent stress cracks and fatigue.

Interesting VMFAT-101 with NAVY on the fuselage
@Locutus4945 жыл бұрын
Jets get transferred between units all the time; they just haven't got a chance to repaint it yet. Also, there is a precedent in the fleet replacement squadrons of marking one side with "MARINES" and the other with "NAVY" since they are made up of and train both sailors/Naval officers and Marines, even though that's not supposed to be how they're marked according to the MIL-STD-2161. I don't know if VMFAT-101 does this however.
@zeeeman87445 жыл бұрын
Locutus494, that must be a fairly new precedent, I’m not aware of that. VMFAT is a Marine squadron and would not have Navy on it under normal circumstances.
@Locutus4945 жыл бұрын
@@zeeeman8744 Yeah, I only ever saw the Navy RAGs do it in person. It's been done in training squadrons that fly aircraft shared by the Navy and Marine Corps for a while; T-45 squadrons do it too. I hadn't watched the whole video when I first posted and didn't realize it was the adversary painted Hornet you were talking about; that could explain why they didn't repaint it.
@zeeeman87445 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks !
@stephencannon31405 жыл бұрын
It is a training squadron for fleet pilots. Pilots who have been winged but are learning to fly the specific aircraft they were assigned or selected. Very Common for these dual use squadrons with the same platform (F/A-18, T45 etc.....common to have Navy on one side and Marines on the other. Students could be either USN or USMC and even mix instructors and students pair one of each.
