Near where my father lives on the beach they have a yearly festival where they show all kinds of kites and what you can do with them, last year they had big jellyfish kites and a designer who does dancing with kites, so they put on music and he manipulated the strings in such ways so it danced on the music. Always an awesome sight to see, you just go there with some drinks and snacks, lay on the beach and just let enjoy all the creations they show. Great fun and always a reunion of friends and family.

If anyone is interested, I kept saying fiberglass as the composite but it is actually carbon fiber.

Very cool! I have a number of two string kites and a couple power kites, but I've never seen a one string kite that's steerable. Very clever. I'll have to get one

Kite fighting is cool but can often be very dangerous. In Brazil the mix of powdered glass and glue on the lines is called "cerol." Kite fighters, typically young boys will fight on the hilltops that stand over busy toad ways. Often, the traffic creates a steady wind to fight their kites. When the string breaks or is cut, the cerol covered strings will fall over the road ways. Occasionally, motorcyclists will drive through these lines slitting their throats. You will see MANY motorcycles with a hooked antenna on the handle bars to aid in catching these strings ahead of their jugular. Neat variety of kites here.

Yeap, came here to talk about "cerol". Glad you did it first. Very very dangerous and an actual crime.

I had a 2 string batman logo shaped kite as kid, also a triangle delta wing that was very controlable and you could do loops to the left and the right.

This is amazing! I'd heard of fighter kites, but had no idea how they actually worked. I wonder if a bigger one could be used to power a kite boat, or just to power yourself floating on your back, otter style.

Back in the early seventies used to fly triangular kite with line off each tip fully controllable and had added knife tips for cutting..

You can tie plastic grocery bag onto a string and have just as much fun, and with two strings one on each handle you can steer them

Back in about 1972 my university had a kite flying event with prizes for beauty, etc. The Asian contingent at the school brought only string and tape to the event. The stopped by the commons cafeteria, picked up some straws and napkins. The built their kites on the spot and beat the pants off of everyone for many of the prize categories (not beauty).

If I remember right I paid to fly in the 1989 Manila two day kite festival. I made and flew 4 inch kite in the mini kites. No bigger then 6 inch's. Kind of windy that day And mine was the only kite at actually flew as I brought plenty of thin light ribbon. So they decided to continue the next day. Pissed off I showed up anyway and out flew every one. I asked the tourist official in charge Bakit talo ako? Why did I loose? He said because you are not Filipino. However you took my entry fee plus this is called the Filipino kite Festival put on by Bureau of tourism. He said "because you are Americano". I think you can imagine what I was thinking but I walked away. I figure I won two days in a row but they would not acknowledge that. This was the only two days I did not enjoy flying kites.
