Self-defense in a bar, like any other situation, should prioritize personal safety and de-escalation whenever possible. Here are some tips for staying safe in a bar environment:
Avoid Confrontation: The best way to stay safe is to avoid situations that might lead to violence. Stay away from heated arguments or confrontations, and if possible, walk away from potential trouble.
Stay Sober: Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, making you more vulnerable. Drink responsibly and know your limits.
Awareness: Pay attention to your surroundings. Stay aware of the people and atmosphere in the bar. Knowing what's happening around you can help you identify potential threats early.
Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut and leave the situation immediately.
Keep Your Distance: Maintain a comfortable personal space when interacting with others. This reduces the likelihood of physical altercations.
Use Verbal De-escalation: Try to defuse tense situations with calm and assertive communication. Speak politely and avoid using aggressive language.
Find Help: If a situation escalates, try to get the attention of the bar staff or bouncers to intervene and defuse the situation.
Have a Plan: Know the exits and escape routes in case of an emergency. Have a plan for how to leave the bar quickly and safely if needed.
Avoid Isolation: Don't isolate yourself in a bar with someone you don't trust or feel uncomfortable around.
Use Self-Defense Techniques: If a physical altercation becomes unavoidable, use self-defense techniques if you know them. Techniques like blocking, parrying, and creating distance can be useful.
Legal Considerations: Be aware of the laws in your area regarding self-defense. It's important to know when and how you can use force to protect yourself.
Travel in Groups: Going to a bar with friends can provide safety in numbers and reduce the likelihood of trouble.
Keep Your Phone Handy: Have your phone with you and fully charged so you can call for help if needed.
Self-Defense Training: Consider taking self-defense classes to learn effective techniques for defending yourself in various situations. Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and kickboxing are some martial arts styles that can be useful for self-defense.
Be Cautious of Drinks: Keep an eye on your drink at all times to avoid drink tampering.
Remember that the goal of self-defense is to protect yourself and avoid harm. Avoid unnecessary violence whenever possible, and prioritize your safety above all else. If you feel you are in immediate danger, call the police or seek help from bar staff or security.

One of the best pieces of advice my old martial arts teacher taught us was this, "in a real fight, there are no rules." The moment you think about things like honor, fairness, etc, is the moment you set yourself to lose. You never know what's going through you opponent's head, so it's best to assume it's the worst case scenario. However, another good thing he also taught us is this, "the best kind of fight is the one that never happens."

My Dad taught me that a different way. He simply recommended that I leave a brick out back of a bar and be the last one out the door if something started. It took a bit to understand that the real hint was that everybody fights dirty in bar room disputes and that it's a bad idea to be anything other than the last guy out the door.

DO NOT go for an eye gouge if you’re not in a dominant position and it’s not a life, or death fight. If you do, then you’ve just raised the ante in the fight and are at high risk of getting eye gouged back by somebody that’s in a dominate position, (eg full mount, etc) and much better abler to apply it. Not every fight is a life, or death situation. You have to gauge the level of seriousness and be careful about mistakenly turning something that wasn’t really that serious into something more serious, or deadly.

Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6. You have no idea about the seriousness of any fight, for all you know the person you fight may knock you down and kicking you in the head. Take every fight seriously and if you need to gouge a eye, it will make any man get the F off of you. By what you wrote it sounds like you have never been in a fight in your life.

"Crowd the kicker" was a something I employed when I fought. I read Musashi's Go Rin No Sho in the 90s when I was studying Tang Soo Do. The Book of Fire describes two concepts that relate this strategy: "To Hold Down The Pillow" and "To Tread Down The Sword". I thought about this a lot, and without intending to do so, I found myself incorporating these ideas. Stepping on your opponent's leading foot when they least expect it is the perfect "atemi" (to borrow the Japanese term)--it distracts and disrupts at the same time, throwing off their rhythm while forestalling their next movements. It's particularly effective against kickers. Doing this while crowding the opponent--"sticking" closely to them, occupying their space rather than letting them invade yours--played to my strengths (good timing/fast hands) while taking away their strengths (usually, quick feet/strong kicks). This wasn't something we were taught, just an insight I picked up from reading about martial strategy. It was useful later in life, too, when I started studying Aikido.

The key to victory is the element of surprise..alot of people wouldn't receive life altering injuries if they didn't start trouble.. the more confidence they have and the more you seem meek.. the odds of success skyrocket when you do your thing.. knees and insteps..ooofah..great weak points no matter how big the man knees go sideways easily..but..as Mr Miagi said " best way not get hit Danielson..not be dare"! So many altercations..not all..but most can be predicted..can be avoided by simply leaving .. but that pocket sand absolutely works.. no proof of anything...

0f course, break the foot in a real and serious fight, but in practice is when you need to let off the foot. That’s what West was referring to. The problem is that under stress, people predictably will do what they’re trained to do, so you may unintentionally let off of the foot in a real fight because that’s how you trained.

My Dad taught me the foot stomp, but I never had much success with it, tho. In 9th grade this kid picked a fight with me at school. We would settle it in the stairwell the next day. He was big into karate and I didn’t know anything. So I asked my dad for a good opening move and he said step on his foot and follow up with an uppercut. I did what he said. in hindsight it had a snowballs chance. However I did it with such confidence and faith that I immediately gained the upper hand and he was in big trouble trapped up against the wall and taking damage unable to strike effectively. So he panicked and does the first self defense move you learn, knee to the crotch, and said im sorry. He hit me so hard my grandkids felt it. He hit me so hard three seniors had to carry me out of that stairwell. I was paralyzed for 15 minutes. The school was so upset about what he did that they only suspended him, not me. Boys used to fight so regularly that the worst injury was a blackeye or a bloody nose. you were considered a coward if you fought dirty. nowadays, kids gouge eyes, sucker punch, use weapons, 2 on 1, etc.

Number Two is the only one that contemplates getting away, which is the priority in any unwanted confrontation. You will find very few videos that tell you the absolute basics of how to engage when it’s a question of fight or flight. These guys are experts and so they can identify their targets and hit them with precision. This takes years of knowledge and practice but seems so easy on the screen. Almost all strikes are to the head and upper body and therefore also look impressive. These exercises are for the Dojo, not for street emergencies. Hitting others in the face is definitely not recommended - these days there are always those with phone cameras and that sort of evidence if the police turn up will always go against you initially - although it’s a natural instinct when we give in to our emotions instead of keeping focused on the main aim and that is to injure your opponent correctly so as to then go to the next phase which is flight. Dropping someone to the floor and then going down with them is also a no-no in the street, the most unsuspected individuals could join in and speed of execution is your goal. Now, the most important thing to keep in mind is that someone with an injured leg can’t run. This must be your priority: neutralize the leg. One leg is enough and the advantage is that there are two of them, versus one head, so you can choose whichever side suits you best. When confronted raise the arms as if to offer surrender. This catches the opponent off guard, keeps your head protected and also acts as an upper body stabilizer for the kick. Don’t kick with your toes out in front, much the same as with the hand; fingers and toes break with relative ease, that’s why punching isn’t recommended and open palm strikes are, use the heel instead. A sideways motion catching and displacing the kneecap is ideal. If you miss, you’ll at least have made the leg double sideways and if not breaking something is at least extremely painful; a straight blow to the knee will make the opponent feel sick and if hard enough will have them out of the game for long enough for you to get away. Also, on camera, it doesn’t show you to be either an expert or willing to inflict purposeful injury, rather a clumsy, spur of the moment way out. Now start practising at home so your “clumsiness” is highly effective. Like the man said, the more you do it, the better at it you are.

Actually, often a smaller guy, clearly aware of size issues, may put in work to develop physical strength. One of the strongest guys I've known was maybe 4'8". But could bench press almost 500 lbs. Another guy I know took a different approach to being small. He packed a 10 mm semi-auto in his belt. He's a little skittish and paranoid, but hasn't shot anybody yet. Picking a fight, even with someone who appears timid, is reckless behavior. But that doesn't slow many of the tough guys who, for some reason, feel obligated to engage in spirited debates about inconsequential subjects, which they inevitably are highly emotional about. They think they're going to sway someone's opinion to be more like theirs. Unfortunately, those being educated aren't as emotionally invested in being enlightened, don't understand his point, and possibly his words. Like many drunken tough guys ,they believe louder, angrier delivery wins the debate. When that doesn't work, they think they'll win the debate by intimidation. This is when "little guy," who's been sipping a coke all night, sober as a judge, pulls his CCW and silences the tough guy permanently. Size is no real influence on the ability to defend yourself. Pacifism, or surrender to fear, are real influences. Predators smell and are drawn to fear. A knowledgeable and skilled 135 lb trained and armed individual doesn't radiate insecurities drawing Predators. Their calm demeanor and confidence are unsettling to the tough guy. Who may have a brief moment of clarity.

Mr. Handlebar mustaches guy has a great take downs too. The thumb nail guy is hoping that the opponent gets blood in his eyes. I have seen fights in bars where guys have smashed beer bottles on the other guys head and the other guy still fights on. None of you said anything about a good nose job. Break a guys nose is easy and makes the guys eyes water plus the guy is hurting and the next day the guy looks like a RACOON, Lol. Of course never do these things, just walk away from the fight.

LOL @ stepping on their foot to hold em a second. My step dad used that trick when he fought back in his younger days, I'd heard.....So 1 time, he and I get get into a fight down in Mexico, I was 15 at the time. Pops was trying to do that, and step on my foot, but I remembered all about it, and was moving away so he couldn't stomp on my foot.....In the end he had backed me up to a wooden fence to keep the guys horses in that area. I tripped and fell, as pops was coming in for a face blast, so he hit the fence post full on and broke his pinky knuckle, where the bone actually popped out of his hand.(He was pretty drunk, so didn't hurt as much, til later) Back home, he told insurance he dropped my dirt bike on his hand offloading it from the truck lol (Wouldn't be covered if knew happened in Mexico) After that growing up, he and I would butt heads a lot, and he'd tell me "You're never too old to get ur ass whipped", Which I'd laugh, and reply, anytime you feelin' froggy, old man, JUMP!, I ain't 15 no more, and am bigger than you now" That was our old joke back n forth, damn I miss the old bastard ! I taught my daughter at a young age in the 1980's, how to kick a boy in the nutsack, if they messed with her growing up (bully) And I told her school as much too "IF my daughter ever has to kick a boy there, I taught her that, so don't be callin' me crying she beat up some bully"

Another "dirty" but effective technique I employed using this "crowding" principle involved blocking with my shins. Mine were tough because as a young black belt, I was training hard against fully grown men, and we did not wear pads, ever. It was light contact sparring (if you get hit, it's your fault; if you get hurt, it's your opponent's fault). When we blocked, we blocked hard, or else. That tends to toughen up those harder places on the body. Thai kickboxers understand this. If you've hardened your shins, stepping into a low round house kick and blocking shin-on-shin is effective, and it leaves your hands available to do other things. If your opponent's shins aren't as tough as yours, you've taken that weapon out of the fight. Tae Kwon Do people, who liked to wear shin pads when they sparred back in the day, were particularly vulnerable to that. Not an appropriate technique for friendly sparring. I tried to save that technique for cocky, overly-aggressive fighters. It humbled them, and the best part is, they effectively did it to themselves.

#5 is true and is why I have always been able to instantly measure if someone has been in a significant number of fights in their lifetime. The culture and movies tell inexperienced people that it "LOOKS" brave and "LOOKS" confident to stand this way. To get right in your face with their chest out, shoulders squared towards you, and chin up. And experience would tell them the exact opposite, that this is almost an automatic loss. Therefore they clearly have little to no experience with fighting. If they had been in a lot of fights, they very quickly would learn not to do this. This marks them as having been in 5 fights or less in their entire life. If that. Usually. Not to mention that it's not just detrimental to stand that way from a striking perspective. It also makes a person very easy to take down. Legs become easy to hook or trip. Body is easy to wrap around for a bear-hug. It's just not smart in general. The second part of #5 (eye gouges) is mostly bullshit. Human beings know how to protect their eyes by instinct. The myth of the person who just sits there while you dig your thumbs into his eye sockets doesn't exist in the real world. On the other hand, the specific situation where eye gouges could do a lot of damage is when you can control or immobilize someone's hands and head. So using it against someone who is establishing grappling control over you.. Not that bright. #4 is complete bullshit. The last thing you want to do is try to gain leverage by gripping someone's short hair. This is idiotic. No one is crying about a hair pull, and as a lever it pretty horrible and easy to slip. This guy learn to fight from his sisters or something?? #3 I mean... Someone who thinks sharp thumbnails hurt has never been punched in his life. This guy is not worth taking advice from. #2 is legit, but he's basically trying to treat you rudimentary grappling skills. But again, this isn't some magic trick. Knowledge of balance and which foot people are putting their weight on, is just day 1 in a wrestling camp. It's good information for 5 minutes. Now you need 5 more hours. And 5 more days. And 5 more years of instruction. 5 minutes alone isn't going to give you a massive advantage. #1, seems more like a trick paid security might use for crowd control to avoid lawsuits. Something you could do to get guys to stop climbing on the stage. Not something you'd use in a fight.

The key to #1 is what the security guard said you do after you throw the sand: begin your counter attack. Doesn't have to be sand, sand just works well because it gets in the eyes and can cause a problem longer but you can use anything that can be thrown toward the eyes. Water, coffee, alcohol, glass, beer bottle, doesn't matter. The objective is to activate the "protect the eyes" reflex and capitalize on a takedown or counter.

I've been in quite a few fights and yes I have carried sand in my pocket and throw in people's face before they catch about 12 punches. I'm also quite accurate at flicking a lit cigarette from my left hand into people's face before they catch a bunch of fists. It's worked quite well

Agree with your analysis EXCEPT #1. I think it's one of the most effective way to stun the opponent in a street fight. It's like pepper spray, but simpler.

Missing a key point, a trained fighter will always measure distance. Second. Trained fighter will always walk away first unless no option other than to throw/roll.

The eye gouge works every time...also a very painful place to apply pressure is just where the top lip and base of the nose sits. Apply pressure to that spot or better still a karate style chop aimed in a 45 degree angle up into that area as hard as you can.

I met a guy over 20 years ago that could cut a beer can with his thumb nail. If it's dirty, its a fair use technique, there's no such thing as a fair street fight. Especially when theres more than one opponent (punks need back up)

I used a deep eye poke 3 times before, twice the eye popped out and the third stayed in but ended up being surgically removed and replaced with a glass eye. I highly recommend the eye gouge to end things fast and easy.

Long Post, but worth the read if you have the time. I've only been in a half dozen street fights in my adult life. Four of those attackers I've put in the hospital. Here's the breakdown of each fight/defense. 1. Attacker came at me low and hard like a football tackle. I leaned into it spreading my legs, and brought both hands down on his collarbones, then proceeded to grab his now horizontal body at the waist by reaching over him. Using his momentum, I picked up his waist, and dead dropped his head on the concrete. He was out like a light and for a while I thought I might have killed him. He walked around with a neck brace for quite some time after the incident. 2. Attacker tried a frontal kick on me, which I promptly grabbed at the calf and spun him forcibly off balance and onto the ground, breaking his wrist. 3. Attacker poked me in the ribs with a nightstick from behind. Instinctively I reached around to disarm him of the baton, and in doing so folded his wrist forward to the point it snapped, again breaking a wrist. Turned out he was an overzealous MP from the base, and thinking quickly I hauled him out of the club and drove him to base medical in his own truck. I dived for the bushes before anyone figured out why he was there. Evasion and Escape was the better part of valor that night. 4. The was a somewhat drunken Marine that tried to attack me while I was laying down with my eyes closed on the launch boat to the US Marine prepositioning ship I worked on as a contractor. That first attack caught me completely by surprise, I barely had time enough to stand and sweep his feet while I threw him to the deck between the launch boat chairs, and the crew immediately broke up the fight. Back on the quarterdeck of the ship I quietly walked up to him and offered we go somewhere away from others to 'finish it'. He began making a scene (in front of the Officer of the Deck and an armed Marine guard), so I turned to walk away. The SOB hit me in the back of the head as I was walking. The really got my blood boiling, I whipped around grabbing his throat with my off hand and punching him like a jackhammer into a single aimpoint on his left face at the cheek. It was maybe 5 or 6 hard rapid blows and by the time I finished I was on top of him on the deck with my legs to either side. By this time he managed to grab my hair (as a contractor I kept it long at the time). I still had a firm grip on his throat. I remember the Marine guard pointing the muzzle of his M-16 between us, screaming to let him go. I agreed so long as he'd let go of my hair first. As soon as he released I did too, and the miserable SOB actually BIT my hand, causing one last haymaker punch to that aimpoint on his face, with enough force to flip him over onto his fact. I stood and walked back from the crowd rushing in. I remember looking in one of the vehicle mirrors on the Roll On - Roll Off deck and not finding a mark on me. However, I was drenched from my collar to my belt in blood... his. The next day he looked like he got hit by a truck. The point I aimed at had stitches from his nose to his ear, and that side of his face was swollen so bad his left eye was nothing but a blotted purple slit, and even his right eye was barely open from the swelling that carried over to the side I didn't hit. I made a tactical error in hitting the same spot, not only did it leave serious injuries, I could have just as likely killed him. But that's what people get for attacking me from behind like the cowards they sometimes are. I don't like to fight, but I also don't accept losing a fight by not giving it my all. Each of these attackers chose to attack me, I didn't go looking for a fight. The fact that I tend to be soft spoken and in a respectful manner they probably saw as "weak", to their great peril. SSG. What about the fish hook? If you dont think its dirty enough you can tack on a quick Tbag as a finishing move. Also, consider adding some pepper to the sand and if you're going for the nuts, dont just slap them, always grab, twist and pull in that order preferably.

A good roll over fish hook can beat a guy 4 weight classes higher but after roll over and u got there head turned u might break there neck if u start leverage punching with your other hand while u have there head turned and fish hook pinned . A simple left lead into a collar grab into a leveraged pull into a right cross /crosses is a good effective dirty move that isn't as frowned upon as much as hair pulling. And nut hitting is a act of war .
