#2 is spot on. You'd be surprised how slow a big haymaker looks when its thrown at you by someone who has no idea what they're doing. If you're relaxed and your adrenaline is kicking in I swear it can almost look like its slow motion. Be confident, don't hesitate and throw a straight right down the middle. We deliver punches from a different stance in raw combat international but aside that every point this man makes is spot on, as an ex bouncer of 18 years I can with confidence say I've been in hundreds of violent encounters and have managed to come out on top in almost all scenarios due to boxing being a staple in my self protection training, fact is if you strike properly and practice most street fights will end after a jab or cross typically, most thugs are not trained athletes accustomed to taking heavy blows, my last encounter with a violent offender ended with my left jab, I should also mention I stand at about 5ft7in and weigh approximately 165lbs, not a big man by any standard, practice your striking with a good coach and keep at it, when you need it the most it will work for you.
@M4nvrs2 жыл бұрын
I'm around the same height as you but weigh considerably less. It's a real issue for me, because usually if I ever have any confrontation the dude is bigger. It's more a confidence thing, which is why I try to avoid issues most of the time, even when it feels I'm backing down.

Being an Asian and my friends are sometimes not let into busy clubs. Fortunately I knew the manager and asked for him but the bouncer told all of us to fuck off. I asked again and he pushed me back hard. This guy was 6'3" 250 Italian, my friend stepped in and knocked him out with a punch straight to his jaw. He's 5'7" maybe 150. My friend finally came out saw me and fired him on the spot. He couldn't hear him he was out cold so we carried him to the parking lot and left him.
@buckemptier2 жыл бұрын
If you have been in hundreds of violent encounters it's probably because you go around starting shit with people because you know they will underestimate you, standing at 5'7". That's nothing to brag about, it makes you an asshole. I'm 43 years old, live in a low income inner city neighborhood in a major US city and I haven't been in a fight since I was in my early 20s. When you know you are equipped to handle a fight you get in more fights because you take it for granted you will win. One day you'll run into another boxer o the street without knowing it and then you stop waking around liking for trouble cuz you'll allow for the possibility that you are the one who's gonna get beat up.
@geecee19902 жыл бұрын
One of the first things we learn in martial arts when we discuss boxing. It's better to hit fast than hit hard. Being hit, in itself, is demoralizing. If you can get in a few hits right off the bat in a fight it immediately puts you in a superior position. Everyone is brave until they get punched in the face, no matter how hard it is :)

Another tip I give to my kids; always imagine the shot before you throw the punch. Run it through your head. At the same time imagine what your next shot will be, as planning one step ahead of your oponent is a great advantage. A light kick to knee joint can cause immense pain. Try and save your energy, most oponents are exhausted after 60 seconds that's when you can finish the fight.
@ct-gt2dt2 жыл бұрын
Lol you don’t have time to “think” in a fight. Telling your kids that is gonna have someone kicking their shit in while they worry about “ooh my next move”. gaining consistency in combat effectiveness relies completely on muscle memory. unless you get them into some defense class or have them sparring constantly then you’re just doing some old man gum flapping about things you don’t really know and actually setting them up for disaster against anyone even slightly more aggressive than them. Don’t put them in an embarrassing situation for listening to dad. When tony says “think about it” he means to think about it before it happens and stay visualizing and practicing. Not think during like your James Bond doing a slow motion karate equation.

The last time I was out and someone tried to start trouble with me I assumed my typical Muay Thai stance and the guy knew enough to recognize it and just said "fuck that" and apologized. Hello from Canada! I just discovered your channel and loved this video and subscribed. Great information for people! Very simple, but very necessary. I remember my first big fight in high school. I made a huge mistake and it almost cost me dearly. I gave the guy an uppercut just like the straight jab you showed us. I was going for the chin, but knocked out his 4 too teeth. He had to spit a couple out, then his friends start picking up his teeth. I thought it was over. But the guy just smiled at me, then came at me. All of a sudden my muscles locked up and I stopped breathing basically. He got me back pretty good. It was the best lesson that I don't think I could have gott unless really being in a scary fight first. I learned to just relax and try to enjoy it after that. I became very confident in my speed, athleticism, and ability. Always knowing in the back of my head that anyone can be stronger, faster and more abilities than me. WWG1WGA

@tr1pl3str3ngth43 жыл бұрын
also you can practice your uppercuts with medium weighed barbell where you slightly squat down in a neutral stance and then use your hip drive as you explosively get up and then do a straight uppercut motion with the barbell, the movement has to be explosive and 1 motion for it to work, atleast it helped me who is on meds that make my arms weaker

Excellent Video in every regard. There is just one minor thing, shown but not mentioned explicitly: When connecting your punch, you dont want to draw back immediately but continue the push as long as it solidly connects to maximise energy transferred. Think of grabbing a doorhandle 10cm behind your target. The amount of swinging will tell the difference.
@Rusco173 жыл бұрын
In terms of extending the arm fully, I've always felt Mike Tyson gave good advice; punch through the target. Great video again coach, looking forward to the next one👍🥊🏴

But isn’t that because the cushioning of gloves forces boxers to overcompensate If you even land a millimeter or two of knuckle into their face, it’s gonna make them reconsider their next move for sure

I've been in more street fights than I can count, and the biggest lessons I have learned are 1. Figure out how to fight correctly so you take less hits. 2. There is no rules, if they have nuts crack them. 3. The other person can kill you, don't let up. 4. Never start a fight, only ever finish them if you have no other choice. The lessons this man teaches can save your life, and even prevent you from taking someone else's. I'm excited to continue watching his videos from here on out, and to refine my form to be able to protect myself in the future.

Thanks for sharing this. I feel this knowledge is more valuable than ever. Lots of people on edge these days. My best bud is a lifelong boxer and has been in his fair share of scraps. I’ve gone to the boxing gym with him for training a few times, and man it is intense! One thing that always stuck with me was the same as Tony pointed out, punch straight and fast. I’ve seen blokes dropped while they were winding up their haymakers. Looks like a great way to wreck your shoulder as well

Great video Tony! I suggest a follow up of what normally I see in street fights which is one guy bull rushing and and swinging wildly, what would you do in that situation?
@jgk17033 жыл бұрын
If you have the space I suggest taking a half step back against an aggressive street fighter, they normally lead with a right hook, short step back then get off your punches, I'd suggest left hook then right uppercut.

Great tips from a true master! Punching comes so natural for you that for a non-professional it might seem difficult to see what they might be doing wrong. Kickboxing champion explained never to telegraph your punch. Inexperienced fighter would lift their elbow or shoulder before punching and an opponent who knows what they are doing would block it easily. Just like Tony demonstrates in this video, the punch needs to travel straight from A to B, without lifting the elbow.

Hi Tony and thanks for the great videos! I've been wondering if when punching, we should imagine our hand stopping at the other person's face, or rather imagining going through it and all the way across and beyond? I.e. should we think of almost stopping the punch right after it has hit the opponent? Thanks and best wishes!
@GazLan Жыл бұрын
Punch through. Stopping just after contact is more of a jab. A jab is a good range finder i.e. for your less dominant hand to locate the target, punch through with your dominant hand

And straights... hooks and uppercuts too. He's just saying that cocking you fist back is a total waste and it telegraphs punches. A hook is as quick as a turn of the body and an uppercut is as quick as standing up. The power and speed comes from the ground (feet), through to the fist. I used to box, I was more of a defensive boxer, but I hate fighting.
