Just the way this scene builds up to the mayhem we know is about to unfold, the way the tension is built, then released, is masterful. That and how direct, simple, and powerful Denzel's moves are throughout makes it all the more vicious, and how he saved the bearded henchman for last to really make him suffer with those corkscrews...yikes. Denzel is a fantastic action movie lead and he is just golden.

It's also the gratification, the whole build up to it makes anyone really hate these arrogant thugs, in our minds we see everyone who's ever treated us badly or wrong or arrogantly abused their power against us, it's primal, so when he unleashes it's one of the most gratifying scenes to watch, a pure angel of vengeance in all it's glory descending on the wicked.. One of my favorite bits in this scene is the part where Robert is constantly opening and closing the door, symbolizing his internal battle with himself. He wants to remain true to the promise he made to his late wife that he won't walk this violent path anymore, but these gangsters have proven themselves to be so despicable that he can't stand the thought of just letting them walk.

I felt it was to ritualistic to simply be an internal battle. too precise movements to be a struggle. I felt it was something like ocd. much like him counting the seconds of the encounter, adding up the time it actually took. it was all extremely methodical, and i thought the opening and the closing of the door was the same. very similar to people with ocd who do things like turn lights on and off 3 times before shutting them off completely.

it's not, this is just for the movie. In reality, he would be dead, because this close combat area, with weapons and guns, could not be predicted in any way. Also, in reality, physics are the same for everyone. It's not like the other guys move in slow motion or do exactly what it's predicted, while Denzel move in light speed. There a many goofs in the scene, a trained close combat personal would never do. For instance, the guy with the gun, why should he go into distance? Just shoot him in the back, that's it. Or the guy at the desk, why he has no gun at his desk. He is in the position, where he must count on such situation, so a gun should be obligatory.

I like The Equalizer and John Wick but what I liked alot about Denzel in this scene was he had no wasted movements. Every action/reaction was swift, fast and with a purpose. Hitting certain guys with kill shots while wanting others to suffer so he could take his time to punish them. Plus, the music made it feel even more badass.

The fact that he times himself and he’s disappointed because he keeps finishing slower than what his targeted time was points to the fact that this is him over the hill and past his prime a bit. @@cttekin Funny, Because I’ve always found it a bit of both. I think through his career he’s come to understand he’s his only competition, so he started out timing himself in his prime and came to an understanding based on his environment, how long it should take him to finish. In this scene, his takes away the time in which he took to “show off”, like slowly killing the man with the wine opener…Arrives at his new calulcated time which was still over his estimate, and you see him shrug it off as “acceptable”. Because he knows he’s out of practice. It’s beautiful detail

@@cttekin slightly disagree because he made a promise to his wife not to go back to this life. So he’s reluctant to kill again and this scene is his first time back at it. Seems like there is actually one bad guy name andre accepted Robert offer to do the right thing. But even then, Andre the bad guy boss didn't want to kill a cop and get into more mess. He was lucky he made the right move or he and his gang would been all dead.

Denzel Washington is such a good actor, I love this guy. But we shouldn't forget the bad guys either. They played well too. Thank you all for this movie

Love this scene, one of my favorites from the movie. To be locked in a room with 5 killers - but you have the skills and training to eliminate them in a matter of seconds. Thats some next level shit.

Just because you're in the Russian mob doesn't mean you're a killer; you're just a thug for hire...Take the Navy SEAL's; Army Green Berets, Marine Recon, Air Force Special Tactics....those are TRAINED killers...They would wipe the floor with those Russians; trust me...I'm one of them. GO NAVY

What we've learned: When you make a shitty joke and Denzel patronizes you with a fake laugh....you have 30 seconds to live.

The non verbal acting is what gets me the most! I love facial expressions that speaks louder than their lines.
