Although I understand your point about Nagoryuki, I had an alternative way of looking at his existence as a character. When I saw that he had similar animations and characteristics with Slayer, it made me think that maybe all vampires within this universe share these mannerisms. These things that we associated only with Slayer may in fact not be unique to him alone. It could be a reflection of real life where groups of people who belong to a culture exhibit similar behaviour not just in their speech but also though body language and movement. TBH I'm also biased as he is the coolest looking character in the game to me (until Venom, Bedman, A.B.A. or Zappa return). I hope this made sense and thanks to whoever reads this. Interestingly, since you mentioned Killer Instinct, the game actually does vary female characters a bit more than your (very good) example with Aria. Riptor, the dinosaur, is female, and Hisako is a J-horror ghost. I don't think that horny designs necessarily all come out from the desire of catching the coomer playerbase and playing on the audience's desires, I think a lot of times it's the artists and designers themselves that like those designs and would make them regardless of whether they sell or not. I know there's a story on the guy who designed Chun-Li just about that. That they sell and the suits like it definitely encourages the trend greatly, but even if they didn't I find that artists and designers are an inherently horny bunch that always tries to get stuff to pass under the radar. With that said, I agree that more diversity in women's designs would be great and that Tekken situation with it is pretty unfortunate (although, I like Master Raven's design a lot). I'm a Street Fighter player and when it comes to Street Fighter female designs I think they handle things a little better overall, although while still being on the eyecandy side of things (that, I'm going to be honest, I really like and would hate if it changed). One thing I like in Street Fighter women is that Capcom was never afraid of giving them some good muscle definition, which I really like in SFV's Cammy and Poison. And now they're also coming out with Marisa in VI, who's looking very good and is definitely a nice change (and one that surprisingly sees a lot of people still being horny for her even if her design isn't, let's say, conventionally feminine).

I pour a ridiculous amount of time into filling notebooks with theoretical fighting game design, and I've worked on about 65 characters over 6 different imaginary fighting games, though 2 of those games are collabs with a friend, so I can't take 100% credit for those, and those are also mostly responsible for deviating from my usual standard design setting. I love female characters, and I also love "freak show" characters (e.g. non-humanoid body shapes like giant snakes or dinosaurs, or even just really weird fashion and characterization like GG Strive's take on Faust). Lightspeed cross section of my female characters, to embarrass the tunnel vision of standard fighting game design: Carrie is a psychic, undead ghoul with half her face burned off and a chunk of rebar impaled through her skull who fights like Zato by telekinetically puppeteering a titanic skeletal snake. Ada is cryogenically frozen in a stasis pod embedded into a big fuck-off mech that she sleep pilots, very much like GG's Bedman. A.J. is like, 6'3" and built like a truck, and wears power armor on top of that. Elaine is a corpse that was Frankenstein'd back together, who consistently breaks the rules of having a skeleton because she no longer feels pain and overextends the shit out of all her moves because she feels no need to hold back, ever. Violet is a soulless avatar of destruction on the level of "terrifying force of nature", taking the form of a barely humanoid iron chimera kind of thing, full of molten metal and perpetually trailed by plumes of fire. Bethany struts into combat wearing a half clown, half '80s glam wrestling outfit. Maud is intentionally bland in her fashion; she looks like a librarian. Kopukok is a humanoid worm kinda thing, and mostly an eldritch abomination who flexes her immortality by ripping her body apart and mutating into all kinds of body horror nonsense. The intentionally unnamed changeling queen is also a big humanoid bug with four arms, reverse articulated legs (knees bend the wrong way), and big ol' bug wings on her back. Shoguset is normally a kaiju who shrinks down to "just" 12 feet tall to fit into the fight, and she's a giant worm with a human head and bug legs. That's all just from one game. On top of that, there's El Presidente, who's in her late 30s and is very directly inspired by Potemkin, including her proportions (side note, in all 6 games, the role of "huge, impossibly tanky grappler" is played by a female). Katrina's a melee-type space marine archetype, who wears impractical sexy power armor as a way of shit talking her opponent; it's tied into the same kind of thing as her left arm being amputated above the elbow, and she doesn't bring her prosthetic because "I live out "Monster Hunter: This One's In Space" as my job. I can, and WILL kick your ass with one arm". She's also built kind of heavy, because power armor and a huge fuck-off plasma club inspired by Splatoon's Dynamo Roller are really fucking heavy. Ka'zok is an undead witch whose arms were cut off post-mortem in an attempt to prevent her from spellcasting if she ever came back, and knowing only dark magics, she can't restore her arms. But she CAN magically mutate her tongue into a huge, freaky whip to act as a substitute arm in desperation. That's still not all of them. This isn't hard. Designers explore this space all the time with male characters. There's nothing about being soulless and evil, or inhuman anatomy, that is incompatible with being female. Hell, there's nothing about being a buff-ass muscle head, or fat, or old, or ugly that's incompatible with being female. These are just traits that would be obstacles to getting huge sales numbers if you were gonna put the characters onto a sexy swimsuit calendar. It kills me that male characters are often allowed to be freaks, but female characters are almost always tunnel-vision'd into being swimsuit models.

@richardjohnson8991 Жыл бұрын
I love that you chose SF6 Marisa for the thumbnail because yeah that's exactly why I want to play her when the game drops next week. She turns nearly every expected attribute from your female fighting game character on its head. She is a big burly woman not here to be an object of your sexual desires, but to break you over her knee and demand your respect. Female characters in fighting games somehow always fit into a slim but THICC and not too old, not too muscular archetype of visual presentation....or they're children (but the lore says she's 5000 years old) and I'm squinting at you really hard questioning why you love them sooooooooo much. Often relegated to being glass cannon/highly mixup focused but fragile characters, I'm always glad to see when a game subverts the traditional archetype for something more explorative and interesting.
@blaccpanther87154 жыл бұрын
You know, this is actually pretty damming, just the lengths they are willing to go justify the same female character design. To think that Raven is being commanded by some millennial, Nina and Anna are cryogenically frozen, characters like Ling staying in high school since T3 and you rightly mentioned that even the damn robot looks like an underage girl unlike say, Frost from MK11 even. The thing is, in popular culture there are some interesting female fighter archetypes to take inspiration from....what about an mma physique like a Cris Cyborg/Amanda Nunes? and then in film you have old female masters like Jade Fox in crouching tiger hidden dragon? you also have amazon warriors in a lot of fiction and indeed history such as the Dahomey Amazons of West Africa who were the inspiration for the female soldiers in the black panther comics? The only new female character who is actually interesting is Zafina to be quite frank.

It was a small gang of hood (and hood-adjacent) trans women and banji boys listening to ratchet ass trap music lol. The best player in that group never hid that Tekken was her favorite fighter because it reflected her hand-to-hand combat power fantasy that helped her deal with real life. Thank you for articulating a point that I've had swirl in my head but never coalesce into an actual opinion. The reason I cannot play Katarina is the whole "I'm hot and kinda slutty with my exposed thong" design makes me actively hate her. She might be amazing to play, I will never know. I think Josie looks foolish too. Also Gigas I simply cannot take seriously as a character, I hate everything about him and am rejoicing in the fact that he will disappear for T8. Lucky Chloe, on the flipside, I adore because her appearance plays in with her character, and her moveset is ridiculous - so it all melds well together. I'm one of those people who cannot play (refuses to) play a character who I think looks dumb or lame. It's why I was attacted to Haohmaru, Iori Yagami, Vanessa, Ralf, Law, Paul, etc as a kid - they look _badass_ and do cool shit. Same reason I grew up idolising Geese and Kazuya as these characters who are almost peerless in badassery that they require complex inputs to pilot correctly, which my then teenage (and current adult) brain simply cannot do. I'm not cool enough to do a raging storm, and that's OK. If figthting games are an expression of ones self made manifest, I want to be able to lose in my local while playing a character who I like and enjoy. There is nobility in that. Going 0-2 in the bracket with the 'top tier' (and you play them because they're S tier or whatever) is just embarrassing.

People loved Lidia in Tekken, the mildly muscular middle aged woman, I understand probably the point is that you're kinda against the waifuism but...*if developers realized they could make strong/chubby girls and it would sell, you would get a lot more of them*. There was a proposed Tekken character concept which was going to be Ganryu's Daugther; Ganmi-Chan, which does scream the age problem, but if she was a heavy sumo gal, not only is that just *good unique character design*, people would eat it up. These devs really could have their cake and eat it too on this front, many people find the unconventional to be attractive, see Mei and Zarrya from Overwatch for example, or RE 8's villain. Even Street Fighter, theres at least a considerable differentce between Chun Li and Rainbow Mika in terms of body type, they understand that fighting game dudebros...probably dig the fighter chicks to be *fighters*.

How DARE you presume that Gigas is male! I'm not sure even it knows what it is! Is it really fair to refer to robotic characters as being male or female? I'm sure the point still stands even without those examples, but that kinda seems like straw grasping to me.
@HQRubbish3 жыл бұрын
Gigas is referred to as male by the game itself, pretty sure it is also heavily hinted towards him being Kats dad. Either way it is hardly a stretch to say that Gigas and Jack are heavily male coded while Alisa is female coded.

Being ugly, tall, disfigured, is PART of being a man. I'm not letting the ladies have this one trait I'm proud of. Stay pretty, stay ladylike.

Yup, I found TEKKEN girls are bland and look like the same pretty girl, that's why I like the Street Figther and Guilty Gear girls designs.

Idk bro… Alisa is made to look like Dr. B’s daughter. That makes her design a bit more interesting than being a robot ass robot. Tekken could make a fat black chick to replace Bob, but that would be lazy.
@HQRubbish2 жыл бұрын
And what specifically about her being Dr.Bs daughter hinders her from having been fat, super built, really tall or very short? That's a copout.

It's a Japanese thing. While it does happen in Western games a lot, in Japan, where it's VERY conservative and misogynic, they have the "Christmas cake" stereotype "Because nobody wants a Christmas cake after the 25th [birthday]." Power Instinct for the win, though.

Idk how making female characters sexy is misogynistic, especially infighting games where everyone is built like an unrealistic tank The general “sexy bad!” Attitude the left has is as obnoxious as seeing threads of 4chan where a female character’s design is judged on how sexy it is and how good it is

No, fighting game developers like to make money and, as generations of marketing experts will tell you, "sex sells". You can get away with outlandish and ugly designs, if you are THE fighting game franchise on the market (and even then, 80% of them are fetish bait or conventionally attractive anyway). Not so much, if you are either a smaller studio that is one flop away from bankruptcy. Oh, and let's not forget that the vast majority of male characters are also freakishly attractive and display a ridiculously difficult to achieve physique.

" female characters all basically have the same body type and are attractive and young and Feminine " I like how you conveniently ignore the fact that male Characters are also extremely masculine and muscular or rarely fat, even when they're not human Just say that attractive women offend you and move on

Not a very good video essay argument. Your entire video is waffling, and crying that women aren't older and portrayed as young female fighters. Get used to it or make your own game if you are that bothered by it
