you are legitimately one of the only people I've ever heard speak about 3S chunners with such genuine enthusiasm. I honestly have never really jived with the 'neutral god' sort of character that plays a game of incredible attrition at midrange. 3S Chun Li makes me think of Melee Marth a lot, given they are both characters that do a lot of midrange poking that forces you to turtle up only to get grabbed by them when they were standing across the street at the corner store while you wait for the traffic signal to turn, or catch you with a low poke that suddenly converts to the stock/round.

@@BigYellowSilly I hear you. I think the big tipping point for neutral monster characters was Season 1 Oleander in Them's Fightin' Herds, who kinda made it her game plan to make people walk into her big disjointed book and who has such an incredibly terrifying level 2 super that letting her have level 2 would warp the match around how incredibly good the damage and meter steal was on Fred and how safe the big dumb demon made her pressure. A combination of that and just how strong holding up-back was for a character like her was kinda back-breaking, which is why they made her less disjointed in her normals, changed how her meter-stealing works, and made it so her normals propelled her forward more and gave her more mix.

Rewatching this and realizing Ralf Jones in the pre KOF12 KOF's plays like a more intentional version of this character (as in a lot of her useless options aren't there the characters more in line with his roster etc. pretty impressive considering he was first). He's also known for mediocre specials, an incredible super that deletes a health bar like nothing and wanting lots of meter, and having the best buttons in the game. His HP's are just like chun's default and back HP but they're proxy based for which ones you get. The general design is still different what with a frame one command grab instead of a fire ball, and a dive kick instead of SBK but a lot of its the same. Hell both have an insane low confirm that can lead to insane damage and a mash special that i loathe inputting and pray becomes a QCF input. It's kind of funny how I love Ralf but never really connected to Chun until you pointed a lot of these bits about her kit out to me.

Honestly, I feel like something that is simultaneously usually overlooked and one of the primary reasons 3S is so good is the way they handled supers and meter. Chun is an amazing example of how the super design of the game can define a character. So many of the high/top tiers are that way, at least partially, because of the way they interact with meter- Chun, Yun, Ken, even Makoto or Ryu to an extent. It's a system that is (in my opinion) almost perfectly designed, and should be praised more. I just wish it made more of an impact. It would have been cool to see it become the norm.

I've been playing 3rd Strike for over a decade. Chun-Li is my main, with Akuma, Twelve, Sean, Hugo, and Elena as secondaries. I play Chun-Li as hyper aggressively as possible; most opponents already have her parries memorized, so it's much more interesting to ditch the usual methods and make the opponents desperate. Your video was quite comprehensive, and I'm glad you included things like the double slap into SA2, her corner stomps, and aerial throw. Very few players even know about the aerial throw; I've made a tactic out of jumping in towards shotos, parrying their Shoryukens, and then countering with the aerial throw. That shuts down Shoryuken spammers _very_ quickly. Some other things worth mentioning: you can alter her corner stomps by using wall kicks and doing the input at different times. Also, heavy Spinning Bird Kick is more effective against larger opponent due to hitbox quirks; if they try jumping over, they end up getting caught in the last hit. This is a great way to keep even experienced players off-balance. Also, EX Hazanshu is a tool best utilized as a surprise against players who think they've gotten comfortable with blocking and parrying; it's fast enough to catch inexperienced players off-guard. Also, her crouching strong has a deceptive amount of reach, and is viable as an round-opening attack depending on the opponent. Also, I love super jumping against Urien at the start of matches; it's fast enough to beat his projectile, can counter his knee press, and absolutely no one expects it. Also, the overhead somersault you mention at 19:37 is a way to bait and counter Shoryukens and a few super arts. Also, you can immediately trigger SA2 out of a teched throw, which can be deadly if your opponent is low on health. Anyways, great video. Thanks for making it!

A very unique perspective on what makes Chun-li so strong. Most people just say that she's an average character with a terrifying gimmick (and the tools to always setup into that gimmick), so it's nice to hear that recontextualized into a means of a game-plan as opposed to a reductive assessment. How you put it at 11:24 was a great comparison of character-intent, and I even agree that it's a REALLY COOL way to design a character. That said, I do think that her design is so polarizingly-tuned (if not just a happy-accident) to that game-plan that it makes her an otherwise-unremarkable character without it. I've never really played Chun-li (or faced many online), so you've legitimately shown me moves I've never seen before because of how irrelevant they are to practically play her. I think what makes people think Chun-li is poorly designed (as opposed to just weakly-designed), is how much her balance as a character feels irrelevant outside of her setups. It doesn't feel like she has weaknesses when she can just opt-out of using her downsides (just use her good buttons, not the bad ones), as opposed to some characters who always have to consider their weaknesses (like the fireball-less cast always having to respect their zoning disadvantage in neutral). It also doesn't help that achieving her gameplan is a concern that she more or less has to think about only once or twice in a whole match, since the meter double-stocks at medium length with buttons that fulfill that chore (and even get great damage/zoning results) exceedingly well. In short, she's a just too-good at getting what she wants; though there's an argument to be made that it may be more an indictment at the balance of the rest of the cast than her. I didn't really come out of this video thinking Chun-li deserves the Golden showcase instead of some sort of Gray-Area assessment, but I do still highly appreciate having watched this. It made me rethink this character I had written-off for years. Another great vid, Yellow!

Lighting legs is a really really good move btw, it’s basically free damage in meaty situations or in reset situation when added to her standard mixup. As a capoeira practitioner, crouching under the type of kicks that Elena uses in her super is actually a correct defense against that kick. Thus, it makes perfect sense it will fly over Chun-Li's head.

I'm confused because every move he showed being crouched looked totally reasonable to my heathen eyes but maybe that's not how street fighter typically works?

I feel like it's a bit weird to say frame 2 light punch when it's actually active on frame 3. 3s often uses old frame data notation, so 2f startup back then, really means 3f now. (2 frames of start up, active frame 3)

6:08 A great showcase of things that most people would be never able to pull off. It looks impressive but most players would not be able to recreate this during an actual match, heck maybe even in training mode itself. And I am pretty sure that is not because of the amount of parries required but the small yet sudden change in timing / rhythm after the 10th parry, having a little gap followed by a slower sequence of parries. Unless I am not aware of parry sequences such as this being easy money in Third Strike. Even then having the awareness to recognise it in time as well as pulling it off during an actual game are different things altogether.

@CB669412 жыл бұрын
A few things I want to add: Although you shouldn't use HP predictably, the punish scenarios against Chun Li if parried aren't as optimal compared to if other characters have their normals parried. This is because she's too far away from the opponent that most punishes are either long range normals that are usually not cancellable, ex fireballs that travel fast or a super that covers distance quickly. Only some characters can more optimally punish it without meter. Cr. MP makes her low profile go even lower. She can duck fireballs, counterpoke her own HP, Dudley's own HP, and even Elena's fastest overhead. It's so low you can use this move to make jumping attacks whiff, which will either make the opponent eat the cr. mp, or go for a throw if it didn't hit. It is really good and covers her anti air weakness once I played with this character a lot more.

It's use is circumstantial, but a big fat anti air move actually happens to be what chun lacks for the most part, so i feel like in theory this could actually be a pretty legit strat. What a heartwarming note to end on!~ But y'know, having finally watched this...I think maybe Chun-Li _is_ the 3S character for me to play. I like watching the game a great deal, and have nothing but respect for it from the standpoint of it being a historic and competitive hallmark of fighting games, but every time I've tried to pick it up I just...no one in the roster really clicked for me. Initially I would've gone Elena, but her rotoscoped animations just clash way too much with the rest of the game for me to deal. Then I thought I'd go Remy, but I'm...never really thrilled about charge characters; not looking to play Guile 2.0 (probably reductionist of me, but it's what I feel about him). I also tend to have a contrarian streak when it comes to character tiers, which has put Chun-Li entirely out of my consideration for _years_ and years. But then you mentioned boo-boo doody super 3, and I realized, "...Wait a minute, that's my answer! I'd be playing pretty much the top-est tier character, but if I'm using her worst super...well, she at least won't be the most top tier she _could_ be." And that might about be enough of a justification for me.

Since multiple top-tier characters seem to be defined by an amazing super, I'm wondering how the meta would change in a tourney that banned the choice of supers like Yun's S.A.III or Chun's S.A.II Edit: to make things clear, I meant only banning the selection of top-tier's game defining supers. Like Chun would still be okay to select super 1 or 3, just to limit the busted tools of already busted characters. Although a tourney where supers are straight up banned would also be cool

That stage has all sorts of small quirks, like if you shake the screen enough times the bowl of ramen on the forground table will fall off

Pretty cool to see what's going on behind the scenes with top level play. Will definitely have some things to look out for next time I watch a sf3 match.

I thought Chun-Li was considered the best character in the game because of how good she is, how simple her gameplan is and how easy the c.mk hit confirm gets in a higher level of play Who are the top 5 according to you?
@BigYellowSilly3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think Yun and Chun are the clear top 2, they're very close but I'd put them on their own in S tier if I did a tier list. I think Ken and Makoto are 3 and 4, but everyone after them but above Hugo imo is extremely close imo. I think 5 would be Yang or Dudley, but it's a close call.
@heylookitsrob3 жыл бұрын
Yeah yun and Chun are tied imo. In a scenario where everyone has perfect execution yun is probably a bit better, but Chun just doesn't have to work nearly as hard. Two bar Chun is probably the scariest thing in the game since that high/low/left/right mixup post super is so easy to do on top of being confirmable.

If Chun's crouching MK had like, 3 more frames of recovery it'd be soooooooo much easier to play vs. It's like obnoxiously safe on whiff, you can like never jump in on it as a punish unless they're not looking at the screen when they press buttons, and she's so short while crouching afterwards that she can parry at the only timing she's available for a move to connect with her. And if she times it well, she can both parry your jump in and tech your empty jump throw, with no time to do like empty land > jab before her throw connects

I called Chun 2nd cause personally I think Yun is a tiny bit better, but this is a great idea for a video!

Great new video. Could you consider doing a fighting game garbage on Faust’s bone-crushing excitement in Strive. At least in its current state it has a super low and short hitbox, does barely any damage, doesn’t wallbreak and leaves you at midscreen no matter where you use it so it’s basically a waste of meter no matter what. The smallest jump will nullify its use as a reversal.

You forgot about the one thing that absolutely ruins Chun Li. Her stage theme kinda sucks in comparison to the rest of 3rd Strike's OST

@Xanhast13 күн бұрын
her biggest weakness is stage soundtrack that anyone learning her has to endure - even when learning the character, for 20 min on loop Q_Q also audio video is out of sync in later half, makes it hard to know what you're referring to.

Chun is like, tailored to make the game lame. The moment she gets super the opponent has to play timid or else they risk losing half of their health, but if they don't do anything she can just whiff back+fierce to build even more meter and Kara-throw them from pretty far to get the health lead. Tho I have a feeling that if lightning legs was a motion move that she could consistently cancel into and super 2 was a long 1 bar super like Hugo's 720 she would be pretty fun

not sure if you're gonna read this and neither if someone already told you this, though i haven't seen any comment talking about it, but the audio of the video seems way ahead of the footage shown, not sure if this is my computer but any other video on yotube seems to play normal.

I knew most of this already, but it's still good to see despite not playing this character, especially since you rather even-handed. I did learn a few new things too, like how crappy cl. MK is; one would think they would test that an overhead, you know, actually *hit* the majority of crouching characters, but I know that at least Capcom has made the same mistake again in later games. Sigh. The most important new things I learned were just how fast c. LP and cl. HK at 2-frames and 4-frames respectively. What in gods' names were they thinking there? I'd still rather fight Chun than Yun's even dumber ass, but sheesh.
@syrelian2 жыл бұрын
As someone who knows jack all about 3S, do you get "on hit" options when your attack gets parried, or "on block" options? Cause I remember Justin Wong having a minor breakdown at the realization he coulda jump canceled at the Evo Moment, but if he couldn't actually escape anyway thats even more painful
