As a Killer Instinct player, I would like to point out that, with experience in the game, you will break more combos on reaction and fewer by guessing. Also, if you get a read on when people are going to try to break a combo, you can counter break them for huge damage. Yeah he gets a few things kinda off for KI. You also don't need a heavy ender to cash out, just any ender. And no mention of manuals/other ways that characters make combos unique. The game gets railed on a lot for having "auto" combos, but a high level match has some pretty off the wall shit going on, even with someone like Jago. As for breakers, the logic is simple. Light's need to be guessed, mediums/heavies can be reacted to (for the most part). i found that once I played a bit it starts becoming very obvious what's a heavy vs what isn't (especially for linkers since it's always 1/2/3 hits for l/m/h), and the rest is just getting comfortable with the timing and understanding how to use the threat of a breaker vs actually trying. Again manuals sorta throw a wrench in all of that (which is good) but feels kinda like the experience he had with the game wasn't based on accurate information.

Funny, I just got into KI since getting it on Steam from the winter sale, and it's become the only fighting game I feel I can actually grasp, helped by the fact that most of my nuclear family has some experience with but are still near(ish) my beginner level. I love the combo and breaking system, especially with how Combo Assist makes it accessible to new players without dumbing down its complexities: it lets everyone access the combo system, but you still have to understand it to truly utilize it. Also, it means that while you're being combo'd, you have some means of interaction with everything that brings: mind games, reads, counter reads, reactions, all that good stuff. Also, the breaker system showing you which button you should've pressed when you lock out is super handy: I don't know what I'm looking for, and my reaction time is even slower than yours, but I just noticed "Huh, every time I mash a breaker, my opponent was attacking with mediums. I should mash medium breakers." and starting breaking my opponent way more. Basically, I think you do need someone as scrubby as you to properly enjoy learning, but I love the game and what it adds to the genre.

Just want to say something about Brawlhalla (because you mentioned that your not really able to comment on it), as someone who has played it for almost 3 years now: Brawlhalla is a platform fighter with some, lets say, strange design decisions. Your sole defensive options are a dodge (which is on a timer) and an extreme amount of movement options, stemming mostly from dash. Many people (especially smash players) are immediately turned off by the movement you have, often thinking it's trying to encourage floaty gameplay, but it rarely turns out that way. Brawlhalla uses offstage interactions more than any platform fighter I've ever seen, to the point where there are weapons in the game whose main gameplan is to gimp your opponent. True combos in this game are usually very simple affairs, with with the (few) 3 hit true combos often being cited as broken. But strings are plentiful, and work in harmony with the dodge system: reading a dodge allows you to do these strings while your opponents dodge is on cooldown. In fact, one weapon in the game (scythe) is almost entirely based around strings and dodge reads, while having few practical true combos. I would definitely recommend Brawlhalla to anyone, but like any fighting game, it isn't that fun until you understand the game first.
@ramp85364 жыл бұрын
Brawlhalla was the first fighting game that I ever tried to play online and as a then beginner to fighting games as a whole, the movement system was the biggest draw to me. The sheer amount of recovery/aerial options you have gives it an unparalleled amount of freedom for beginners. Trying to outmaneuver thrown weapons, bombs, and other players was insanely fun and compelled me to actually try to understand and execute some of the slightly more advanced concepts and techniques like Gravity Cancel because they integrated naturally within the core of the game. I also prefer it to Smash in that it's a lot faster and there are actual true, consistent combos even with DI. One thing about the game that I think may turn some players off is how it handles characters, where instead of all having their own unique move sets, each character has a unique set of 2 of the game's weapons with different special moves or "signatures," as well as different stats dictating movement speed, attack speed, damage, and defense. It's definitely a way for the devs to release new characters faster than any other fighting game out there and the weapon system that results from this is super interesting to me, but it also means that characters are individually less interesting, and there aren't any characters that are truly unique and break from the gameplay mold of Brawlhalla.

It's quite close to Virtua Fighter in its complexity with a few unique twists that make it its own thing. Tekken kids are in for a rude awakening when VF6 comes out. That doesn't however change the fact that it does some things better than other "respected" games do, for instance: free frame data, fairly good optimization for PC, and a completely free-to-play trial version that let's you get the feel of the game instead of wasting a full $60 on a game as inherently fucking broken as GBVS or DBFZ.

I've been playing Killer Instinct since 2013 & let me tell you that it's worth trying. We have new players still getting into the game & we have a World Cup happening online throughout all of 2021! This doesn't include the many members hosting events, a discord, & even a KI school through Patreon. There is plenty going on for the game if one is interested in picking it up right now. For those that are looking to play. I highly recommend looking at Infilament's guide AKA the KI Bible. KI allows for extreme diversity through the diverse cast & combo system. A player must always mix up their combos to not get broken. I can understand the struggle of breaking combos in that game as a newcomer. You have to learn how to break every character. Light linkers are unreactable so you have to guess & light autodoubles you have to anticipate. The Steam version is an odd one. You can NOT play crossplay with Xbox/Win10 in ranked. HOWEVER, you CAN through exhibition & lobbies. If you want to grind ranked then the Win10/Xbox version is preferable. Great video! However, I can't believe you didn't recommend people to buy +R (don't worry though +R has already shown me that I love Guilty Gear since the rollback update). Also, Punch Planet is cool if you don't mind a smaller playerbase than even Fantasy Strike or KI Steam numbers. Being honest I think KI making combos easier is one of the best things in the genre. A lot of new players end up spending too much time fixating on combos and getting the muscle memory to do long damaging combos, likewise a lot of new players will die to long combos and feel like they need to learn long combos to win, with kis more streamlined combos a beginner can theoretically do a max damage combo with no real practice meaning they'll worry less about these longer combos and instead on getting the hit that leads to these combos, in order to avoid getting broken players will also learn to mix up their moves as to become less predictable which are two elements that I see a lot of new players having issues with. Killer Instinct takes away what I believe is one of the biggest traps to new comers in fgs and I think that it is a better fighter on the whole for it

I found it super rewarding to beat people from halfway across the screen while they tried to figure out how to get in on a hidden missile tier projectile and s/c.H

Idk I liked this video. Your opinion is clearly that of someone that's been in the scene for a long time so hearing what you have to say feels genuine. Like all you really want is for someone else to experience the feeling of getting hooked on your first fighting game. (I mean I've already played all these games but hearing your take is still enjoyable) good video, thank you!

I am so glad to hear you say that you could not play KI. I tried that game and DBFZ for so long but had the exact same issues as you. I felt like an NPC whenever I played online and not in the way where it felt like I had the ability or the tools to become better. Side note to anyone who may be wondering, yes, rising thunder is the game that the upcoming league of legends fighting game is based on. It was canceled early in development because riot bought the studio and the game was released to the community to take over.
@renkagamine42273 жыл бұрын
forgot to mention riot games took rising thunder to make a fighting game out of their mechanics which is why rising thunder isnt getting any sort of focus or attention anymore, still expect the same game mechanics but with different more developed characters

Tekken Revolution was one of BN’s attempts at making a F2P model fighting game. SoulCalibur: Lost Swords and Rise of Incarnates were also in that same vein, from the same publisher, the latter being a very terrible attempt at removing the Gundam license from Gundam Extreme Versus for ease of worldwide release. All of these versions were, how do you say, not good.

Honestly despite having trash reactions myself I LOVE KI. The game becomes less about reactions and more about predictions. In short the more you know about each character and their game plan the stronger your defense not just from a technical standpoint but a very literal one because you know the exact buttons they want to press. It is DEFINITELY not an easy to get into. The reward comes from patience and lots of pain. But the reward is so worth it. Even when losing that understanding of simply not having learned enough is one of the best things. I do feel that not enough emphasis is put on the tutorial which covers a massive range of topics that also apply to other fighting games. And I mean stuff I don't even think Skullgirls covers.

I will mention Shadow Fight Arena. It's a (at this time) mobile fighting game that does feature a lootbox system and it's mostly just small stat boosts and passives that aren't too broken until very high in the ranks. You can get around to unlock every character if you play enough and the Shadow System is preety cool. You have 3 fighters on your team and you choose one to battle. You use your fighters until someone has none and they win the match. The shadow system is filling up bar and entering Shadow Mode for most characters, where you unlock your supers. Characters have different passives and playstyles so you aren't gonna get bored trying them out. Don't go to the official discord though. Please do try it if you want, it's free and on mobile for now so it's easy to access, I promise you won't regret it!

there would an "honorary" one, being free and totally legal, which is Hyper DBZ. While it doesn't sport any online, excluding via usage of Ikemen or Parsec, it still technically counts as a pretty good way of enjoying a DBZ 1v1 competitive game, without the need of spending extra cash for DBFZ. But i can understand this list was made with games officially supported in some way or from personal experience

Tekken did have a free-to-play fighting game back in 2013, called Tekken Revolution. It's actually the game that gave us Eliza, but that's probably the only "good" (depending on who you talk to) thing about that game. I played a bit of it in 2014 before the shut the servers down, and it wasn't the best thing in the world. By the time the game shut down, there were 29 playable characters, but only 8 were unlocked from the get-go. You had to use your fight money to buy new characters (except for Eliza), which you earned by playing online, but to play online, you needed to spend a regenerating free-to-play currency that you could buy for like a dollar a pop. If I remember correctly, there were two match currencies, one for casual matches that capped out at like 10, and one for ranked matches that capped out at 5. To unlock Eliza, you needed to get enough of her unique currency, Blood Seals, by playing matches. You earned something like 5 - 10 Blood Seals per match, but to unlock her you needed something like 25,000, and to unlock her big boobie variant, you needed somewhere around 200,000. You could earn more Blood Seals by playing the Mokujin Rush, but you could only play that once a day. The Fighter Customization was still a thing, but I believe everything cost an extreme amount of fight money, so the game encouraged you to spend your real world money on it. There was also a character leveling system in the game that let you spend skill points on character attributes, but I'm sure you're not even going to read this much, so I'll just say that it was bad. It wasn't a great game, even for free. If Bandai Namco were to do it again in the future, I hope it's a free alternative like Core Fighters instead of a complete free-to-play game.

As a Smash player, Brawlhalla is commonly regarded as one of the better Smash alternatives out there. It has a lot of Smash-like elements that can make it easily accessible to anyone who's played a platform fighter but has enough of its own jankiness to give itself its own identity. There's someone else in the comments who has more experience with it than me (I've only played it for like a year) but basically, it has some elements that may seem off putting at first, like the basic movement, but the combat comes together so naturally that its hardly an issue and takes very little adjustment to get used to Also, if you want a free-to-play Smash game, literally just play SSF2. Its, quite literally, a free-to-play Smash game. It plays a lot like Smash 4 but has a lot less technical mechanics like Footstools and Ledge Trumps. Also it has Waluigi, Sora, Isaac and a single Fire Emblem rep so it immediately has my thumbs up

I'd honestly be really interested to see kind of like this where you break down the general game plan and ideas behind every current modern fighting game like you did here, maybe as a type of "which fighting game is for you" type video
@carlosmartinez-jd5gp4 жыл бұрын
All hits in KI are reactable when you’re breaking, a bad internet connection makes it hard, but framing it as a guess initially is misleading when you immediately turn back to saying it’s your own fault for not having the reaction time for pulling it off. No haze here, just wanted to note that interesting editorial.
