my favorite "manual" move is when running lights and "sirens" at 3am you switch on siren just before dangerous intersection and switch off after crossing it

Not sure about any other province but BC that is completely ILLEGAL. I saw some very poor driving habits with some of these Paramedics. I was a driving preceptor over my 40 years with BCAS, if you are moving, AND your emergency lights are activated, then your siren MUST be activated as well, that is the law. Especially in the city like Vancouver. Driving between intersections and turning your siren off is just plain STUPID and you are asking for something bad to happen. It drives me crazy that these so called “professional drivers” drive code 3 with one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the siren box. Don’t give me the bs that they can change the siren tone in the steering wheel crap either. It only works between two tones. What these idiots do is all done with one hand on the siren control and there is absolutely no reason for it. Turn the siren on and use the horn control on the steering wheel to change the tones. This way you remain with BOTH HANDS on the steering wheel. Where they are supposed to be as per BCEHS policy. IMPO

Great catches! I prefer the front lighting on the Demers units. Both the new Crestline and former Demers units have poor lateral lighting, as the 1st white (halogen on Demers, and LED on the Crestline's)are too far back, as many emergency vehicle accidents are lateral in intersections. Concerning Paramedics turning off light's and sirens in traffic, I believe it is more a question of another unit becoming available closer to the call, and the original unit gets immediately gets re-deployed as calls are waiting.
@Mastinae4 жыл бұрын
Regarding shutting it down in stopped traffic at an intersection, TGG is right. Normally the crew is still attached to the same call and just has nowhere to push the traffic safely.
@garystar23984 жыл бұрын
@@Mastinae I have a hard time believing this, but effectively panicked drivers sometimes shoot through intersections causing accidents. In many EMS systems, the Paramedic decides if he/she will respond hot (light's/siren) or cold (without). There is minimal difference in patient outcome for most responses based on the history, co morbidity, risk factors of the patient. Unfortunately, 9-1-1 is misused and most responses are transport only, as the patient has chronic conditions.
@Mastinae4 жыл бұрын
@@garystar2398 During my time riding with BCAS as a medic student and during school it was far more common to shut it down for public safety than because you were cancelled and then immediately put onto another call. Often if we were getting switched to another call we would get the call over the air and we wouldn't shut down between going to one or the other. From my experience in the response phase your decision regarding code 3 or not will be guided in large part by call categorization via the CAD. When transporting then yes, it's going to be entirely crew driven decision making.
