In today's tutorial, BJJ black belt Erin Herle teaches how to properly transition into and keep a dominant 'Knee-On-Belly' position for BJJ & MMA. Many consider this to be an unstable position, but Erin explains the subtle details of weight distribution to ensure dominance and show available options for transitions and submission attacks.

great knee on belly technique tips. knee on belly can be a frustrating amount of pressure applied and white belts and no belts struggle with it. It is great for self defence in a real fight because you can strike down but the opponent on the bottom can't really do anything except try to escape and it can be exhausting. Lots of pathways open up. Plus for self defence it is quick and easy to stand up and defend or get away if someone tries to jump in.

Shane one thing I haven't seen in any of your videos yet is an mma defence against someone farting, i was on the top of North South once during sparring and as i punched my partner (not hard as we were only sparring) he ripped off the biggest fart in my face. I had to run to the toilets to puke. Another time with a different partner is when i tried to get out of an inverted armbar i had everything in the right position to get out when the guy rips a fart so load the entire class stopped to see me tap whilst heavily panting as if I'd almost been choked out and last week i was sparing my instructor who is really good at triangles, i managed to get caught but i escaped just before the point of no return but as i did he too farted, leaving me to inhale the most disgusting thing ever. It was as if I'd just had shit smeared all over my face. Please let me know if i can avoid getting caught by this move in the future.

Are you still doing bjj? I started Monday and yesterday this 150 pound guy choked me out and then after that put me in a armbar and I didn't tap because I thought I could somehow find a way to escape so he pulled harder and I instantly had to tap 😅 it's incredibly fun though

@@jimmylittle200 Yes I am still doing BJJ! Still can't find a good use for knee on belly, but I am getting better! And yes what I realise is that people who is better usually don't try forcing you to tap too hard. They know when they have the choke and they will slowly let you know you can't get out, which is really helpful!

Huh. I practiced knee on belly last night for the first time and we wore ourselves out trying to escape while the other person controls, and we were placing all the weight on the opponent. If they threw us across the border, we’d insert the back hook, hug the neck and take mount. If they bridge and bench press we stand and absorb it and return to KOB. If we’re side mounted and they manage to bench us off we go to KOB. If they shove the knee off we either side mount or follow them. If they turn toward us we step to the hip, let the knee slide toward their head and take the modified mount, scooping the elbow for escape prevention and achieving full mount. If they are very shrimp happy we would scoop the elbow and cross face. I don’t know any submissions from the knee on belly position yet but I see the potential and I imagine wearing them down with a control flow is a good idea. It didn’t feel like placing the weight on them gave them any control over our balance whatsoever because we had a positional control mechanism for each movement. But as a white belt (3 years of training) I sure haven’t seen it all yet. I liked the presentation of the video, thanks for the perspective.

Niiice, I love that position because it's easy to get up, so I think that's a huge advantage street wise. Say, you want to sontrol someone till cops come, but if accomplices come, you dont want to be on his back or somewhere that may be dominant, but it's harder to escape. Nice vid guys : )

@Tarantula_Fangs
@Tarantula_Fangs 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcusmvpgoat1236 yes it does in certain aspects but it also hinders in others, for example, most rolling partners are typically in a decent weight class, once I full mount or side control it becomes excruciating difficult for my partner to get a heavier opponent like myself off BUT that's where technique comes in, I've rolled with Black Belts who are 5'7 " 145lbs flip me on my ass and full mount me and get the sub! Lol. I wouldn't say that I'm a fast person because of my excess weight but i can stay a good constant pace where it really challenges who I'm rolling with, although i have short quick bursts where i can scramble or get a takedown, I've executed rear bear hug takedowns, headlock takedowns, ankle picks, single legs, leg trips to some wrestlers. Not all the time but I'm pretty sneaky, I need to work on my guard because I'm like a turtle on it's back, once you get mounted on, it makes it hard since not only do you have to maneuver your weight but also your opponent. The heaviest wrestler I've grappled with is around 5'5" and 400lbs, real stocky but really good, i can out maneuver him but he has his own skillset and techniques. My point being is that no matter what your height/weight is you can make it IF you work on your technique but perhaps others feel differently, I'm still only a white belt with over a year of experience so i can't say that I know a whole lot but one thing is for sure, I've improved my physic and techniques by constantly learning, not only about grappling but also about myself, i know what my strengths and weaknesses are and continue to work on them, don't ever feel discouraged if you get owned a lot in grappling, Rome wasn't built in a day! Take the time to learn and work on yourself and ENJOY the journey. Good luck, bro!

This is good for SPORTS BJJ. But, in the streets, the guy on the bottom can strike you in the groin with a closed fist in this knee on the belly position. And, as far as side control goes, the guy on the bottom can hit you with a palm strike to the nose as you fold your arms around him to immobilize him. When you think about it. In most BJJ positions, people are open to strikes from the closed fist, palm strikes, knife hand, knees, elbows, and even strikes with the heel of the foot or tip of the foot. BJJ is fun in the dojo, but on the streets where biting, kicking, striking, elbows have no limits, a black belt in BJJ should think twice. I know of a case where a person was put into a rear naked choke and the person being choked bit out a 2 inch hole in the poor guys forearm which resulted in a sever infection because the human mouth has a lot of bad bacteria. Anyhow, have fun rolling in the dojo.

There is absolutely no reason to use this as a "base". If your already there its common sense to get top mount. Using this as a transition? Yes.. But full mount is the objective. This may sound good and look good in practice, but i dont think its a good idea to use this as a goto base. Especially when your so close to having full mount.

@@petryan9216 I agree. You can. But it's too unstable to be used as a base Imo. Eh? Yea...Knee on Belly is a transitional position that you use to get to mount. When she says base she' s talking about balance and foundation. To go to full mount you need some type of set up you just go full mount. Using knee on belly is one avenue and what she is implying it something developed like any position. Knee on Belly is safer in some situation. If the opponent is a good leg locker you don't want to be in full mount.

@@UrBoyTaz I agree that its a transitional position. I dont think that shes saying to use it as that tho. 0:35 she says she garuntees that you can maintain this position, and a little before that shes saying that regardless of what the person does theres certain responces. Seems to me that she wanting to teach the person to use knee on belly as an actual base.
