I did Taekwondo between my years as a child to when I was a teenager. I started boxing and kickboxing in my twenties. I’ll admit the Taekwondo training has helped me with my dexterity and flexibility and how to stick and move. Great video. As a shotokan practitioner I would contend two things; one, your feet are not strictly on the same line, there is still a lateral distance between them, but they appear close together because generally karate stances are much longer than shown here. Secondly, the advantage of this stance with regard to leg kicks is that because the hips are already open as a pose to closed in a boxing/muay thai stance, it is very easy and quick to raise the front leg for a head hight kick, which is an unorthodox but very devestating way of checking an oponent trying to probe or close distance using a leg kick. While it isn't MMA, check WKF kumite matches to see this in action.

@CatTheHitman ambos y ninguna.

Great vid Shane. I used to practice WKF style karate hence I feel comfortable with this kind of blade stance. The one you did in the video is completely sideway, which is something that TKD practitioners do as they need to pop that fast lead sidekick or execute the back kick. But you're right about that completely sideway will make you prone to leg kick and takedown. For me (and probably for most of the WKF style fighters) our stance and body is more like "45 degree" instead of completely bladed like what you or the TKD guys are doing. I find it to be pretty good because while it strikes the balance between being able to dash in and dash out of range very quickly, it also allows the user to check some leg sweep/kick or moving sideway quickly. Lyoto Machida's blade stance is exactly the "45 degree" version. Both of your feet are not stepping on the same line with this version of blade stance and you may try it, it actually gives you pretty good mobility in moving forward and backward quickly, as well as very agile sideway movements.

great vid!!! I was taught not to bounce,but rather dip. it disguises your entry, whereas bouncing adds a telegraph to your entry.
@guybormann41186 жыл бұрын
The dip is used to harvest acceleration from gravity. The hopping increases the time you get to accelerate at the cost of being stuck to the rhythm...unless you vary it by phase shifts (varying timing) and syncopation (skipping beats). But you don't want to spend too much brain power on becoming unpredictable because it will also affect your own timing. From a stand-still, dipping is indeed the best way to accelerate stealthily because it doesn't require telegraphing posturing and footwork but it is not as explosive.

I have a good mix of the two stances... Sort of a hybrid between the two. Instead of being on two tracks like Muay Thai or on one track like some styles of karate, straddle one track so that the heel of your back foot is slightly just off the outside of the track and the toe of the front foot is just slightly inside of the track so that instead of standing on the track you at straddling the track. Imagine your lead foot basically pointed toward your opponent and the inside of the foot touching the inside of the track with your rear foot pointed at either a 45° or 90° angle with the heel touching the outside of the track. Equally good for offense with the lead side weapons and the back side weapons and equally good for defense without squaring up too much like the Thai stance or blading too much like the karate stance. You can also still check leg kicks very effectively.

oozguu I would say it's a mix between a boxing stance and Kenpo. I never did Taekwon do or that. I started with boxing and then Kenpo, old school American kick boxing, then Jeet kun do and the only reason I keep the front foot with toes pointed forward is to be able to check leg kicks. Especially those low leg kicks to the calf area that people are throwing a lot lately. But it does sound similar to whatever the L stance is because your feet sort of form an "L".

@jamesmiles56626 жыл бұрын
Misty Night Productions yes the side stance is amazing one,if your a kicker,because any spin attack so much quicker less telegraphed,sidekicks which are favourite can fire quick to head body or knee,hook kicks axe kicks all come fast and off course the blitz,and defensively works with shoulder roll less off a target,I don’t have problem with leg kicks as I started with Muay Thai and know how to defend them,but do get sweeped a lot,Thai stance is great defensively but for me more for aggressive fighters,take more damage that way,I prefer to fight on counter,yes if watch old fights American kickboxers and Thai,clearly America far superior skills and talent,but if can’t defend leg kicks you will get chopped down because Thai can take punishment there warriors,

The stance you're demonstrating here is called kima sogi in Taekwondo and not the classical fighting stance. Usually you would turn your front foot by 90°, somewhat similar to what you're doing at 3:30 which is then called hugul sogi. The weight distribution should be around 80% on the back foot to avoid leg sweeps and to enable you to throw an ap chagi (front kick) much quicker. However I liked how you demonstrated, what you called the pendulum step and emphasized the importance of staying low. I should note, that I have a background in traditional Taekwondo, so other styles might have a different take on this.

The way I was trained, at least in TKD, most people tend to go for a bit of an in-between of a front facing stance and a side stance, which is referred to as an olympic stance. It still allows a lot of that explosive footwork as well as making spinning kicks easier, while minimizing the disadvantages of a full side stance. Also, in my own training, I was taught not to actually let my feet leave the ground with that bounce, otherwise your opponent can just time their attacks with your bounce so you can't evade them. Also, while some instructors have their students keep their hands low, it's actually a much better idea to keep them either high or in the middle, even in a point-fighting scenario, as kicks to the head score for a lot more.

I think the way to describe the step in would be like being on a trampoline. You want to push off into the step in at the same point in your landing that you'd push off a trampoline for max height. The only difference being, you're on solid ground. That way, you're digging into the ground and forming a solid platform to generate power not just with the weight of your body, but with the weight of your body, combined with the acceleration of your body weight via gravity, AND with the elastic properties of the tendons in your ankles and knees.

I do TKD, and the stance we use is a bit less a straight line compared to the one Shane showed. The main thing we want to have available in our TKD stance is the ability to spin backwards. Which means that the back foot must have relatively easy access to get around your front foot. Otherwise it will be too telegraphed. But we do that with a slightly more squared off stance. We're still constantly stepping though

I think using a bladed stance for long range is optimal, then transitioning into MT stance for mid/clinch range. Also, the hands at the side (to drape over torso) is primarily a TKD thing because the square-off range in TKD is just beyond the kicking range, so there is very little threat to the head from a kick, but fast kicks to the torso are more likely.

Look into WKF (world karate federation) shotokan kumite because you didn’t mention the stance there uses. It’s a stance in between the traditional karate stance facing your opponent, and that “taekwondo” or the the side stance. No one in the uses the side stance that’s in one line because you’re prone to sweeps, since there’s no kicking below the weights line. It provides the explosives, the power, and the balance over the two stance which is why it’s so much more popular. There was a time where both stances you mentioned were used, but it’s evolved to and in between stance to get the best of both worlds, as well as to comply with the new style of kumite.

In my karate class, our stance have our feet a bit different. Our back leg is side ways, perfect to throw a round house kick; our front foot is straight forward, perfect for front snaps, quick knees, push kicks, etc. Not saying that my way is better or anything like that, just saying how I learned for you guys as well.

Asshat Apocalyptica karate is a martial art from Okinawa Japan it developed before TKD and that doesn’t mean it gave birth to TKD. They are fundamentally different in both theory and application so no wrong.
